It was a competition in so much that someone would win that particular show but it differs from stuff like AGT because all the competitors are already established & the idea of the show is that they will pick a theme, whether that may be songs of a particular artist or a certain genre, in this a case I believe it was ‘classic American songs’ or something like that, so the competition only lasts for that particular edition of the show. Some artists appear more than others, some every week, some others like sohyang less often, but the audience vote there & then for the winner ( yes, she did win this particular week!). When she performed ‘arirang alone’ it was the same tv show & the theme that week was ‘tradition’. She arranges all her performances herself which shows that not only is she an amazing vocalist but that she is also a very talented musician. She varies from song to song how much her version will differ from the original, sometimes very little & others times to the point where the original is hardly recognisable ( check out her ‘lean on me’ from the same series)but she never messes about changing it because she able, she only makes changes to enhance the song, she’s far too respectful to just disregard someone else’s good work. Sohyang had very few music video’s, the majority of her performances are very much live.

Sohyang (pronounced as “So-Young”) she is from South Korea. I’m 73 years old and to me she is the greatest singer I’ve ever heard in my life. She not only a great singer but a beautiful person both inside and out. She first began singing in her local community, with no aspirations of pursuing a career as a professional singer. She was offered numerous contracts from major record companies, but she turned them down, because it would interfere with the plans God had for her. She is a devout Christian and has said that her goal in life is to use her voice to comfort people who are going through difficult times. She knows what hard times is like, her parents divorced when she was in her third year of high school and due to this, she experienced a lot of financial difficulties and was often very sad and she said that it was music that helped her through these difficult times. At the age of twenty she got married and soon after was diagnosed with uterine cancer, which she was able to survive, and she gives the credit to God. She is also an author of children books since 2013. Another thing is that she does all the arrangements for the songs she sings. SHE IS THE BEST EVER

She has so many Epic Performances! * Here are two songs SoHyang wrote earlier in her career.Both have English subtitles. * 1. First one is ,”Dream”. coincidentally, SoHyangs nickname amongst, Family and close Friends is, “Dreamer.” She wrote it to encourage all to never give up on their Dreams. Sohyang actually did win this Immortal Songs show. Think of them more as celebrity shows not like talent shows in the US. The artists are invited on and all are popular singers in their own genres. It invites 6-7 established singers, stars in their own genres, to sing new versions of songs related to the episode's theme and all are paid for their performances. I am sure you are learning more about her, but I thought I'd share just a bit of history about this elegant and beautiful lady. She started in church singing Gospel music. She learned to speak American English watching the Disney Channel and Pop music by listening to American singing stars. She had cervical cancer at the age of twenty and believes God saved her life so she could devote her heavenly voice to comforting people. She does her own musical arrangements for live stage appearances including the musical adaptation, the chorus and orchestra, the staging and lighting, and costumes.
