We all wonder if Sohyang is human or from another planet. Current odds are that she’s from another planet, with an outside chance she’s actually an angel come down from Heaven. 😇 We have never heard anyone sing like her, or be able to hold an audience in the palm of her hand until she lets them go. Her voice is, as one person described it, like liquid gold. Perfection in clarity and pitch, and she doesn’t fade in the upper octaves, which is startling when you hear her hit those 5th and 6th octave notes with such _POWER_ it actually gives everyone goose bumps-and makes us bald guys’ hair stand on end! As she says, her voice “is from God.” She does all the musical arrangements herself, with the input of her in-law family and musical assistants, teaches vocal technique at a South Korean university and speaks five languages: Korean, English, French, Vietnamese and Chinese, as well as reading Greek! Let me catch my breath. OK. She is a cancer survivor from uterine cancer at the age of 20, just after getting married, and states very plainly that God saved her life due to the prayers of her church. But this left her without the ability to have children so she decided to dedicate her life to being a Contemporary Christian Gospel singer and has refused recording contracts from the biggest corporations in the world. She only wants to sing for charities, churches and while doing missionary work, to strengthen those suffering through difficult times. David Foster, Josh Groban, Michael Bolton and others have all eagerly worked with her when they were in Asia. She contracted hepatitis B from a blood transfusion during her cancer surgery and it clings to her to this day. Because of this she is prone to catching pneumonia but has sang perfectly while suffering from it in her live performance of “You Raise Me Up” before Shane Filan of Westlife on South Korean TV: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qpbCfWylm82Iqpo She has asked those who love her singing to pray that God keep pneumonia away from her, she has suffered from it on so many occasions. Imagine how she must feel with this coronavirus floating around everywhere! She just turned 45 on April 5, 2023, though in Korean culture she would be 46 because you are deemed to be one year old when you are born. She was about 37 when she sang this version of “Arirang Alone,” their unofficial national anthem based on a 600 year old folk song expressing their desire to reunify north and south: vimeo.com/308253527 While being sick with pneumonia eight times from 2016 through to 2020, and considering giving up singing altogether, she decided to enter a televised singing contest called “King of the Masked Singers” in 2017 and won six consecutive times, which has catapulted her into international attention from the performances being posted on KZbin. Whitney Houston’s former manager saw her on KZbin and showed her to Oprah Winfrey, who brought her to David Foster’s attention. Foster then contacted Sohyang and went to Japan in order to have her perform eight concerts with him at Tokyo’s famous Blue Note Club in late-2018. For those who don't know, David Foster was Whitney Houston's producer for some of her songs, wrote "I Have Nothing," her most iconic song, and is the most famous and influential music producer in the world. Then she later saw a Korean TV drama where the talented daughter of a very successful businessman was positive she would take over when her father retired. But he left the management of the company to a woman she hated, so she had a fit and lay kicking and screaming on the floor. She can also play the piano and guitar. Is there anything this genius level woman can’t do? Ironically, Sohyang stated in another interview that both she and her in-law family were surprised to discover that she could sing so excellently! Though she is maybe 5' 4" and only about 100 pounds, Sohyang simply transcends the thresholds of music and takes you there with her. She becomes the song when she sings it, and then re-emerges when she is done. An experience like no other. I don’t know what else to say. I’ve spent _entire days_ listening to her, and shed more than a few tears of joy along the way. I really must also compliment the choir, orchestra and audio/video production people Sohyang works with. They are all top notch from what I can see and hear, and that is important to note as these are _essential_ elements of any great musical production. The Korean people are easily as talented as anyone else. As you can see, I am a shameless fan. 😉

This event was in 2015 when So Hyang was 37 years old. So Hyang is a 45 years old devout Christian and gospel singer from South Korea. In her early 20's and newly married, she was diagnosed with early stage uterine cancer, which left her unable to have children. After being healed by God, her goal has been to use her voice to bring comfort to people who are experiencing difficult times. So Hyang IS NOT motivated by either money or fame. She has rejected numerous offers from major record labels. In addition to being a published author of several fiction books, she lectures about singing and vocal technique at a South Korean university. So Hyang, her husband, and some assistants, arrange every aspect of her live performances: the music, backing vocals, staging, lighting, etc.

12:17 I totally agree with you. There are singers who can hit high notes, and they amaze me. But she does more than just hit high notes; she moves the hearts of her listeners and brings them to tears. This is what sets her apart from other singers. I strongly recommend her cover of "You Raise Me Up." You'll probably find yourself moved to tears once again. Thank you for this video!!

Wonderful reaction! So Hyang is one of a kind, one of the best female voices of all time. This becomes more clear the more you hear her. She actually has more versatility than Mariah, who, of course is iconic in her own right. So I have never understood any comparisons. But this smallish woman is something else!

It's not just the song, it's Sohyang. People cry to Sohyang all the time. If someone gets no chills, no tears, no nothing, I think have a heart of stone. I suggest from Sohyang next a beautiful Korean song "Arirang Alone" Also on the show Immortal Songs 2 as this one was.

Welcome to Sohyang's world. Sohyang is one of the worlds best female vocalists. Sohyang does have her own channel now. It's relatively new as previously she had no social media presence. Sohyang is also an independent artist, so no large label backing, and this is by choice. As a christian and a cancer survivor Sohyang has rejected all large label offers due to her health and her faith. Her channel is simply called "Sohyang.official: and it has some music on it as well as her Bible study series. I am sure she will add more music to it over time.

All of the Sohyang performances I have listened to have been recorded live performances. She is a world class vocalist and a world class performer. As for a next video to react to I would recommend “Everyone”. It is a long, extremely demanding piece and she puts every bit of her body and soul into it.

She should never have been compared to Mariah or anyone else. She stands on her own and I know of no one who could perform that song better, live. In 1969, Paul Simon wrote "Bridge Over Troubled Water" and Art Garfunkel sang lead vocals. Simon & Garfunkel released the song and the album of the same name in early 1970. They broke up later that year. Simon did hear the phrase "bridge over troubled water" in a religious context, but not in a song.

So Hyang is 35 here and is a Christian Contemporary Singer and has been signing since she was in her late teens. She and her team did this arrangement from orchestra arrangement to background singers. She has taught at a major Korean University and had her own vocal school. She has traveled to over 60 countries singing at churches and charity events. She has also turned down contracts from major labels. She had early medical issues (cancer) and suffered my bouts of pneumonia. She even went on a 2 year sabatical and has returned with a renewed vigor and power. You are in for a long, long dive into So Hyangs world. I've only been listening to her every day for 6 years. So Hyang sings where no others dare to thread. Enjoy.

When So Hyang sings in Korean, it isxnot necessary to understand the lyrics. She is brilliabt at conveying the message/meaning of the song. If Im not mistaken, I've read her performances on Vimeo have English subtitles.

Trust and believe, you have just witnessed a small sample of the flexibility in So Hyang's voice. Her vocal range is RIDICULOUS and her breath control is INSANE. At the beginning of So Hyang's career in 1996, some folks dubbed her 'The Korean Mariah Carey.' That comparison ceases to exist many, many, many years ago. So Hyang is on another level, in a league of her own.

@@tazzznphilly 😊no problem ,if you liked that advice then this one may change your musical perceptions about what you thought greatness meant,the song Everyone will maybe even change your life,it is that much of a profound experience.i have never in all my 57 years watched something that reached so deeply inside me as this performance,now you may think that I am surely exaggerating what I witnessed but I will say this I have never in any way believed in any religion but this very nearly made me a convert.i will leave it up to you to decide but the one thing I can confidently predict is you will need to put some cushions on the floor to protect your jaw because that mofo gonna be hitting that floor multiple times.

imo, She's beyond compare, She is involved in her own arrangements and her feel, let alone her talent, for songs is unbelievable. Check out and react to her singing I Have Nothing, the jazz classic Misty (Begin Again performance), If I Aint Got You, and her recent cover of Easy On Me. As I like to say, you don't hear So Hyang you feel So Hyang. A day doesn't pass that I don't hear her sing. For me, she is much more than a singer that I like. She is an inspiration and an uplifting pressence in my life. I would miss her very much if I didn't have her their for me every day. Thank you for the reaction. She's a cancer survivor who prayed to God if you let me live I'll dedicate the rest of my life to you. And her divine calling since then is to give comfort and joy to people who are suffering through the gift of music. I think it's why we feel so emotional listening to her sing.
