Count me among the people who was young when this song was one of the biggest hits of the summer. It was probably my favorite song for a while as a kid. I would sing along whenever it came on the radio-- and I had no idea what it was about. I thought it was just about general happiness and joy, getting together with friends, having a party, watching fireworks go off on a summer afternoon in the park. What could be more wholesome and fun? It wasn't until a decade later that it occurred to a teenage me that there was another meaning to the song. LOL

The 70’s. The decade of music with sexual innuendo. Such a lovely song, who doesn’t love this song. It was a hit all over the world. It’s not nasty, it’s sweet.

I was 9, It was a completely different time. Much happier more laid back. Kids would be run out of the house on nice days and told to be home before the streetlights came on and we had No Phones for them to always check up on us. BMX was brand new and getting a bike like them was the big thing. Star Wars, Battle Star Galactica and the trading cards to go with them. Ahhh the memories.

Does it have a lot of innuendo? Yes. But you have to remember that this was summer of 1976 coming off the end of the Vietnam war in summer 1975. The early 70s had so much turmoil and tension and darkness, that the playfulness of this song basically took everyone in another direction. I was just a kid when I first heard it, and I’m going to admit initially I thought it was about ice cream LOL. It didn’t take long for a young teenager to realize that’s not what it was, but it was still just a fun song and the harmonies and melody was so catchy. It took us to a better place even if it was a little more on the naughty side. Against a lot of lyrics in today’s music, this is actually pretty mild. I’m really glad you did this one because I had forgotten about it and it is a bit of fun. Thanks.

I just wrote a comment saying I thought it was about ice cream. :) Made me laugh to realize I wasn’t the only one. I think I was well into adulthood when I heard the song again and realized what it was about. I was probably in my 40s.

Two married couples are singing. After I understood the lyrics -- "rubbing sticks and stones together makes a spark ignite" -- I always hear it as the ultimate love song. Yes, it's about afternoon sex but that's not dirty at all to me -- especially for married couples.

I think I was about 5 or 6 and this song was on the radio in the car and I was singing along. My mom's friend seemed upset and looks at my mom and says "Do you know what this song is about" My mom laughs and looks at me standing up singing and dancing in the back seat from the rear view mirror and says "Michael, what's this song about?". I said "being outside running with sparklers before dark" My mom looks at her friend and says "It's about sparklers". Her friend shakes her head and doesn't say a word. Lol ... to my child brain that's what it was about. Good memories.

This song was on the radio all the time in the 70's. Honestly I never got tired of it. It's catchy, the harmonies are great and it's just a really good song. Probably wouldn't get the time of day if it was released in today's day and age, music has change so much. Maybe that's why I'm stuck in the 70's. Best decade to grow up.

They (the 2 couples in the band that were married or dating at the time) said that they went into a diner, and saw a sign that said, "Afternoon Delight" .. and one of the guys said, "do you know what SHOULD be an afternoon delight?" aka a nooner. That's why they worked food / eating analogies into the song, in "honor" of the initial inspiration of it all.

When this song came out in 1976 I had been married for one year, it was our favorite song. An evening I will never forget. I came in and all the shades were drawn, the airconditiner was turned down low, my shower things was ready and she was wearing a red nightie. That wasn't nasty that was beautiful, prostitution is nasty, casual sex can be nasty, sharing passion with someone you love is nothing but beautiful.

If you aren't familiar with a singer playing drums, then you should check out Karen Carpenter of the Carpenters. She considered herself to be mainly a drummer. but her brother Richard (the other member of the group) convinced her people wanted to see her out front. She was so petite the drums hid her. Her brother Richard played the piano, sang harmony, was their producer, created the music arrangements, and composed. Karen died at 32 from anorexia, but she is still gaining fans who often describe her voice as "angelic."

I love this song, but its weirdly unsettling. They're singing so calmly about a thing that should be hot? Maybe this is what afternoon delight is when you've imbibed a heavy level of cannabis, but dang. If this song were actually on during any "afternoon delight" sessions, I don't think I could.

SEX, what makes the world go round. Great song and the motto of a lot of people in that era before we all got too busy trying to survive. Nothing better except maybe a morning glory.

Back from the war for 5 years. The country was booming but mere months away from the disaster that was the Carter administration. This song was widely embraced. Who knew afternoon delight better than a farmer plowing a field when his wife drove his lunch out to him carried in a picnic basket and she spread a blanket under a deeply shaded tree. Dessert came first. If The Stone's Brown Sugar did not cause an eyelid to be batted, this song only made people smile. Did you just say dirty, nasty, about this song? It was joyously suggestive to people in love of any age.

I get what you’re saying about the song being dirty but it’s just about natural interactions and they’re very sweet about it which obviously was intentional. It’s a brilliant song

Compared to the lyrics of a lot of todays songs those lyrics were quite tame. What do you mean they were too nasty. At least it left something to the imagination. Many of todays songs leave nothing to the imagination. But you are right in your assessment of the harmoonies, they are tight. And the video was kind of like a trip thru time. Great song and overall a intelligent and incisive reaction. Keep up the good work sir.

Maybe it should have gone past the line, but it didn’t. Sigh. It was the way it was. I was very young and the meaning was way over my head. I thought it was about watching the moon space ships going to the moon and watching it in the afternoon as they took off. I lived near Cape Canaveral in Florida…and the space race was all the rage…
