Love this song...been married 54 years and there's nothing better than a little afternoon delight to ease the stress of daily life🥰

As everyone has been saying, this is a song by two couples (Bill Danoff--in the red shirt--and Taffy Nivert, with Jon Carroll and Margot Chapman) singing about making love in the afternoon. While it was the band's only hit, Bill and Taffy did write "Take Me Home, Country Roads," which was a huge hit for John Denver.

Such a fun song. Not sure if you realize what this song is about. It’s about making love in the afternoon. This kind of music is not country, it’s more like Folk

I was 10 years old when this song went to #1. I had no clue what it was about until I was around 40 years old. I just always loved the melody. One of my favorite songs of all times.

The Starland Vocal Band was made up of two married couples. They had great harmonies! ❤ You can’t help but love this song and Afternoon Delight is a great way to say sex without saying it.

No, this was the Bicentennial, 1976. Hence the fireworks and patriotic imagery. They were a country crossover group discovered and introduced by country music icon John Denver.

A one hit wonder. I went to a John Denver concert and they were the warm up group. They did have an album but nothing else was a hit.

Not keen on this song, but always loved the harmonies, especially the big progression at the end. Like Peter Cetera's Love In The Afternoon, it's about bangin' between lunch and dinner... Check out another big hit from the same period by a slightly better-known artist: Pilot Of The Airwaves by Charlie Dore, 1979. English woman singer-songwriter who recorded one of her albums, Where To Now, in Nashville in 1979, including Pilot Of The Airwaves, a kind of love song to a DJ, which became a good sized hit. It featured harmonies rather like those in the Starland song. Also, listen to some early Carpenters recordings, like Mr Guder or Crescent Noon, for Richard's Les Paul-inspired multitrack harmonies. They're glorious.

I like it too! Melody, harmonies, and as you noted, Ace, happiness! Don't get why people don't like it. Everything happening here is consensual.

Imma go out on a limb... Pretty sure that nobody thinks it’s about r*pe, so duh, it’s consensual. 😮 It’s just a very lame and forgettable song (thankfully) for most.

Ace, you might want to look up the lyrics. 😉 Sure, a lot of people may not like this song. But I agree that it sounds happy & they sang great harmonies! It's really rather tame compared to other songs of that same era.

You are right - its not country. Its pop from the 70's. But this song expressed a seemingly innocent way to say you were getting "some" in the middle of the day. Listen again and imagine the words they are using for different parts and actions. The music helps with what is happening as well.

Great reaction Ace! Sure miss you reacting to Lucy Thomas. Please, please, please play and react to a few of Lucy's early videos: “LISTEN”. kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y5eqlmuQadp_jac At only age 14, Lucy was a girl with a voice as powerful as that of an adult diva! "I'LL NEVER LOVE AGAIN". kzbin.info/www/bejne/apiUgqOrbr2Dgpo At only age 15, Lucy blows the original version out of the water. Enjoy, Hopelessly Addicted in Arizona

This song consistently shows up on Worst Songs of the 70s lists. Yet, I suspect a lot of people who claim to hate this song will sing along with it when they're alone in the car.

Nope, can’t do it. Hated it when it was released in 1976. Hate it now. This band actually won the Grammy for best new artist in 1977. Rarely heard from after that from what I can recall.

@@laurakali6522 I could be mistaken but I was 15 then and Boston had hit after hit and I seem to recall them also being in the running and I couldn’t believe they didn’t get the Grammy. Especially in hind sight when their debut album has been oft listed as one of the best ever made! I still rock out to them but Starland Vocal Band?! I guess at least they had their moment to shine, Boston was a beast artistically compared to them.
