A mon avis.

"Cinderella" just turned twenty And she's the most beautiful child Her dear lover, sir Prince Charming Takes her upon his white horse And time slips her mind In this silver palace So as not to notice the rising day She closed her eyes and in her dreams She's gone Lovely little story She's gone Lovely little story "Cinderella" just turned thirty And she's the saddest of mothers Her Prince Charming has bitterly walked away He left her to go with "Sleeping Beauty" She's seen countless white horses Take her children away from her So she starts to drink To hang around in bars And wallowing in her despair Now she's starting to work the streets She's gone Lovely little story She's gone Lovely little story After just ten years of this life She ended up a junkie And in an infinite slumber Cinderella's watching her life go The lights dance inside The ambulance But she kills her very last chance Nothing matters anymore She's gone End of story Our (God)Father who is so old, Say, have you really done your best? We used to danse on it in parties we used to call Boums when I was a Teenager, and I admit it must be shocking for an American loving happy ends to hear such an end to the story of Cinderella, but that's precisely what the french loved, to imagine Cinderella as a juncky! Telephone is the "high school teenager" soundtrack for almost 40 years now... Every end of year parties they are run "Ca se sent" and this one... It's a warning for all young girls dreaming (too much). And yes it's somehow happy because of the beginning. It's a real hit in France, mainly because of the story and the twist more than for the music (as catchy as it is).

Not my favorite from Telephone but a very good one, like most of their songs. I had never seen the video until now and I am a little disappointing here. I would have thought that it would illustrate more the lyrics. But the short passage with the overdosing man bring back the reality of the song. From the context of the song, I have always assumed that "maintenant elle fait le trottoir" by something meaning she became a hooker.

Cinderella, for her twenty years, Is the prettiest of all children. Her handsome lover, Prince Charming, Takes her away on his white horse. She forgets time, In his palace of riches Not noticing a new day dawning, She shuts her eyes, And in her dreams, She goes. Pretty little story. Cinderella, for her thirty years, Is the saddest of all mothers. Prince Charming Has fucked off With Sleeping Beauty. She saw a hundred white horses Taking her children far from her. She begins to drink, Frequent the bars Wrapped up in her despair, She wanders the streets. She goes. Pretty little story. Ten years of this life were enough For her to become a junkie. And in a neverending sleep, Cinderella sees the end of her life. The lights dance In the ambulance But she kills her last chance None of it is important anymore. She goes. End of story.
