The Allman Brothers were the greatest blues rock band ever in my humble opinion. Duane Allman is the greatest guitarist ever. Duane died very young - age 24. Duane was not alive when they recorded this song. BJ it is Dickey Betts on guitar on this song. He was also a great guitar player. I do think you should listen to Whipping Post (studio version, not a live version) next by them. They have so many great songs!

This is the song that saved the Allmen Brothers band. When Duane died from his motorcycle accident Greg, Dickey, and the rest of the band thought that it was pretty much over, that is until Dickey came up with this little gem and thank God he did because without Rambling man the Allmen Brothers would have died with Duane.

I was born in GA in the same city they were from and they were local-famous forever. They used to play all over the place - parties, bars, pool halls, etc. My uncle was obsessed with them (he was a musician too) and he got me into them. This exact song, apparently, was the first song I ever sang too, as a young child. :) I still have my 45 RPM in storage.

Most of this album was recorded after the band's founder Duane Allman died in a motorcycle crash. His 6-string playing was as great as anyone, but his slide guitar playing was pretty much unparalleled. His younger brother Gregg was the lead singer and organist but was pretty much a wreck after Duane's death,so Dickie Betts really put himself forward on the Brothers and Sisters album. One thing they didn't try to do at this stage was to replace Duane with another guitarist as a band member so instead they brought Chuck Leavell,a very hot pianist, into the fold. Allmans are a deep, deep rabbit hole. Much like the Grateful Dead and Little Feat (2 other bands you should check out) their career is pretty much a road map of American music...blues,country,some jazz,a little funk and R&B,even some soul...these cats could run the gamut.

You want to go down this rabbit hole, butch trucks was the drummer and his nephew who performed onstage with the all man brothers when he was 13 years old is named Derrick Trucks he grew up to be a great slide guitarist. He married a woman who was also Avery successful singer and guitar player Susan Tedescki married and merged their bands which created a thing of beauty The Tedescchi Truck Band. Listen to Midnight in Harlem. And others , there bands is talented and makes anything they play there own.

I used to be on the road a lot as a musician. It’s great when you’re young and single, with no ties. But it can also be a drag, one town looking much like the other.

Back in high school I was in the band. My friend and I used to sing songs on long bus trips. (We sounded like crap, but we knew a lot of songs lol). This one was always on the list.

Duane Allman was playing the electric guitar with the slide and Dickey Betts played the second guitar. they had 2 drummers a bass guitar and Greg Allman was on keys and organ as well as vocals.

Duane does not play on this track. He had already passed away. This song was Dickey Betts playing lead, and Les Dudek playing rhythm. Dickey wrote and sang as well.

I saw Dickie Betts live at the Passaic Theater in NJ back in like '83. You can't listen to him or Allman's without feeling good.
