Having seen them 4 times, 3 times before Duane died, I much preferred them doing "Don't Keep Me Wonderin' " live than "One Way Out". However, their live performances of "Whippin' Post" on any given night, kills both.

@@helgar791 I agree with you about “Whipping Post” but since they already reviewed it I thought that seeing Duane and Dickey trade riffs on “One Way Out” is something everyone should experience. “Don’t Keep Me Wondering” is also fantastic to see from the Fillmore East. Great harmonica playing.

@@helgar791 I don't know, obviously ALL the recordings from that weekend at the Filmore are spectacular BUT... The version of "You Don't Love Me" that made the album is (in my opinion) THEE single BEST live songs ever recorded! Also, Dickey Betts' solo in that song is probably the best guitar solo ever recorded! That says a lot too as Duane is definitely my favorite guitar player of all time!

Only lets me hit the 'Like' button once. In concerts, this was the opening song, Duane thought of it as a warm-up/ get it on tune. They were both ( Duane and Gregg) born in Nashville, moved to the tidewater area of Virginia (Norfolk-Virginia Beach) then back to Nashville, then to Daytona Beach FL. Had a band called The Hourglass and went to Los Angeles in the attempt to make a go of it but the record company tried to control their music to make them more commercial. Bad move resulting in failure and band breakup. All but Gregg Allman went back east, with Duane stopping off in the Muscle Shoals area, working as a studio player at Fame Recording studio. He then went to Jacksonville FL, met up with others for a little jam session. The others (mostly) turned out to become the new band. Needing a singer, Duane called for his brother to come back. They were taken under contract by Atlantic Records then given to Capricorn, out of Macon GA, where they moved to so they'd be close to the studio. Southern? Yeah, I think so. Gregg Allman didn't like the title 'Southern rock'. To his mind, ALL rock music was Southern in origin. Southerners were all over rock music. Chuck Berry - St Louis, Elvis - Memphis, Little Richard - Macon. He said you might as well call it 'rock rock'. The so-called experts call the ABB the Kings of Southern Rock. This song was recorded at the Fillmore East Theater in NYC, and recorded for the album 'Live at the Fillmore East' in 1971. 7 months later Duane would die tragically in a motorcycle accident. This album has been called the greatest live music recording of all time. I agree. Look at the song listing, and just play it out. It's amazing.

Thank you for mentioning Gregg's comments on the term 'southern rock'. And he's right; they were so much more; jazz, blues, rock, country all blended into what one might call the Allman Brothers Band sound. Someone in the dorm had their first album in 1969 or 70 and they've been my favorite since.

The Allman Brothers were from South Carolina. The two brothers Duane & Greg played in several bands together and moved around to different cities. At one time they lived in Jacksonville, Fla. home to many great southern rock bands. The band was formed in Macon, Ga and had their greatest success living and recording there. Macon & Jacksonville claim them as their own. Bassist Barry Oakley & guitarist Duane Allman died in motorcycle accidents on the same highway in Macon 1 year apart. Other members were Jaimo & Butch Trucks on drums and Dickey Betts on lead guitar & vocals. Jaimo had primarily been a jazz artist. You can hear Rock, Blues, Soul, and Country in their music.

Until Duane's death the Allman Brothers Band was primarily a blues band with a little Rock thrown in. After he died in 1971 the band's next album had a more even blend of rock and blues with a little country added in. It was in response to this time period in 1972 that a writer coined the term "Southern Rock" to describe one of their concerts.

Statesboro is a small town between Macon & Savannah, Ga known mainly as the home of Georgia Southern University. The Allman Brothers were based in Macon, Ga. & recorded for Capricorn records. They all lived together in an old mansion called “the big house”. That squealing guitar you hear is the late great Duane Allman on slide guitar. There was not a single mistake by either drummer - Butch Trucks and Johanny "Jaimoe" Johanson. I saw this band at a venue in St. Louis, MO back in 1973 on a Sunday night. The amazing thing about Duane Allman is all that he accomplished so young...he's still considered a slide guitar icon...he died when he was 24. He was probably 23 here.

I love the story that Eric Clapton tells that he took the Dominos (or what would become the Dominos) to go see the Allman Brother live and he & the band were sitting down in the barrier between the crowd & the stage....the Allmans looked down stunned like wtaf...Clapton said he was tired of trying to explain "cohesion" to the band and said "here, I'll show you a band that's totally cohesive and get it....Duane Allman wound up playing on their album....

One of my favourite bands of all times. I was 13 when this live album came out. Had to save up to buy it because it was a double album. Never got to see the original lineup live but saw different versions over the years. The original one-two punch of Duane Allman and Dickey Betts on guitars with Berry Oakley on bass....man!! I saw their farewell tour at the Beacon in NY a few years ago. Warren Haynes and Derek Trucks provided that same punch as the original duo and Oteil Burbridge was right in there on bass. Gregg, Jamoe and Butcb were always there for us. RIP Duane, Berry, Gregg and Butch.

lol. You say the guitar pulled you in but I saw that smile when Gregg started singing! Oh, that voice. I missed seeing them. They played Montreal just before Duane died. I still regret not going ... even though I wasn't allowed because I was way too young!!

Taj Mahal's version of Statesboro Blues is what inspired Duane to play in that slide style after Greg bought him the first Taj Mahal album with Jesse Ed Davis on the slide.

That's Duane Allman with the Mutton-chops ... one of the best slide-guitarist to ever live, perhaps one of the best guitarist period ! He's the one sleeping ... sadly he died from a motorcycle accident in 1971. Last song he recorded was "Blue Sky" of the "Eat A Peach" album !

The photo you laughed at of Duane sleeping with the guitar was taken from the Clapton's Layla session in the studio. Eric Claption and his band Derek & the Dominoes went to see the Allman Bros. at an outdoor cocnert, sitting in front and blown away - then invited the band back to the studio - and Duane recorded much of the Layla album with Eric. Eric wanted to see Duane because he heard his guitar playing on Wilson Pickett's version of Hey Jude and thought the guitar playing was the best thing he had heard.

I was in the concert biz back in the day, when the Allman Brothers came back on the road after a "hiatus". At the bottom of their catering rider was.."All the brown M&Ms from the Van Halen tour." LOL We were all very familiar with the brown M&Ms. ;0)

One of your greatest reaction videos guys. And I’m a fan, to see the two of you enjoying their music. Makes me smile, and the kicker with them is. Most of their greatest performances are all live. Not studio. Great Job and I thank you both 😎

Duane & Gregg were born in Nashville, but moved with their mom to Fla early on. Trucks is from Jacksonville. Oakley from Chicago. Not sure about Dickie or Jaimoe but know Jaimo was with a jazz band before the Brothers. They're south all right. My all-time favorites for 50+ years.

Just before he tragically killed in an accident, Duane was talking to his good friend Eric Clapton and told Eric that "I almost have this guitar thing figured out. I can just think what notes I want to play and my hands just go and do it. I don't have watch where they go anymore!!" Eddie Van Halen was another player that always had a guitar hanging from his neck. He would often fall asleep with his guitar in his arms. Duane was the same way. Duane was the unofficial 'God Father' of the electric slide guitar.

That's actually two lead guitarists, playing off each other. Duane Allman on the slide and then Dickie Betts. They're originally from north Florida and were based in Georgia.
