That musical instrument is called the "Theremin". It is one of the first electronic instruments, I believe (invented in the 1920s), and it used to be used to make eerie sounds for a lot of old science fiction movies.

Great reaction to this masterpiece, loveth! The Beach Boys made many great songs and were always known for beautiful harmonies! This is one of their very best, but they also did some amazing work on "Wouldn't It Be Nice", "God Only Knows", "Don't Worry Baby" and "Sloop John B." You could also add to your list "One Less Bell To Answer" from The Fifth Dimension and 'Lucretia MacEvil" by Blood Sweat and Tears as songs you would enjoy reacting to!! It is lovely to see how much you were immersed in this classic even on first hearing it. You are right, there is no description with enough gravity to justify how good it is. I heard you mention the 80’s but you would have subsequently found out we are talking 1966!
