I've been a fan of The Cure since the 80s. They were always kind of a band for outsiders and people who were into alternative music. This is a great song to be your first from them!

We were all Mods in the mid to late 80s , i always liked the Cure but wouldn't tell my mates that , funny how lines were drawn back then regarding music and fashion..
@thetextpistols73543 жыл бұрын
I always considered them to be borderline commercial. “Used to be Goth”, if you will. Now that I’m older and see things differently, theCure are more akin to my generations Rolling Stones sans $300 concert tickets. In a lifespan slash extensive catalog, not the genre kind of way.
@Hi-qe9gt3 жыл бұрын
@@thetextpistols7354 yep, even though Robert Smith doesn’t like to be labeled as goth, the cure’s music definitely was goth and more alternative in the early 80s with 17 seconds , faith, and pornography (my favorite album by them).IMO faith and pornography are definitely albums worth revisiting if you haven’t listened to them in awhile, they’re both really consistent in terms of quality and sooo good. ‘One hundred years’, ‘Siamese twins’, ‘a strange day’, the funeral party’, ‘the holy hour’ and ‘Charlotte sometimes’ are highlights for me. I think with the album head in the door in 1985 they crossed over into mainstream /pop territory with singles like ‘inbetween days’ and ‘close to me’. The early 80s was a dark period for the band and in particular Robert Smith, he was struggling heavily with drugs/depression the band had almost split up after the release of pornography in 82. Simon gallop (bassist ) left the band for a few years and Robert tried to regroup and distance himself from their gothic roots/fanbase with singles later appearing on ‘Japanese whispers’ (let’s go to bed, the lovecats, and the walk) and subsequently ‘the top’. Around this time he stepped in as a guitarist for Siouxsie and the banshees and toured with them for about a year, in addition to some other side projects. Head in the door was sort of a comeback and i think that the mixed reception that ‘pornography’ and ‘the top’ received from critiques pushed them into adopting more commercial and accessible sound in the mid to late 80’s. I prefer the earlier stuff more than their big singles but they’re still enjoyable.
@thetextpistols73543 жыл бұрын
@@Hi-qe9gt spot on, man. You hit on it and I don’t think people can imagine just how stressful it must’ve been trying to replace John McGeoch. I play and I don’t know about you but there’s no way in Hell I volunteer for that job. No F’ing way. McGeoch was like the David Bowie of guitar and maybe even that/my generations Hendrix. In fact, I’m going off of what’s left of a memory, but I think Smith quit on Siouxsie like a couple of days before their tour kicked off? Stress being the reason, caused by McGeoch’s ghost. But regardless of genre or used to be this or that, theCure is undoubtedly legit. Grinding Halt and Three Imaginary Boys are gonna always be important songs to me. That, and I have a daughter named Charlotte.
@Hi-qe9gt3 жыл бұрын
@@thetextpistols7354 he and Siouxsie never got on, he didn’t alluded to her pushing him in the background and not being able to share the spotlight/have any creative input . Their personalities clashed a bit and he eventually did quit a few weeks before a tour, she seemed to hold a grudge for years because of this. His brief time with the banshees also Influenced Robert Smith heavily in regards to imagery and music, around that time he started regularly wearing makeup and adopted his signature ‘goth’ aesthetic. The cure also holds a special place in my heart, got me through a lot of tough times in my adolescence and early adulthood, and have undoubtedly been an immense source inspiration for so many musicians:-).

Awesome that you checked them out. The Cure has been my favorite band for close to three decades now! The you went back on is more poetic hyperbole than fact. The whole verse goes “Daylight lick me into shape I must have been asleep for days With moving lips, I breathed her name I opened up my eyes And found myself alone, alone Alone above a raging sea It stole the only girl I loved And drowned her deep inside of me” Keep in mind that Robert Smith has a flair for the grandiose and poetic language. It just makes for a mode fantastical word picture, you know? It’s difficult to encapsulate the emotions The Cure express overall in their songs. You have the slow dark anguish and pain, jubilant romance and silliness, and everything in between. If you’re wanting to check out more songs by the band, I’ll break them up into “happy songs” and “sad songs.” I won’t include their darker songs, just more pretty and sad love songs. Happy “Lovesong” (which he wrote for his wife Mary as a wedding present in 1989, and is wonderful) “Inbetween Days” “Lovecats” (which has a real nice jazz swing bass guitar and drums) “The Caterpillar” “Catch” and “Friday I’m In Love” (as famous a song of theirs as “Just Like Heaven”) Sad songs “Pictures of You” “A Letter to Elise” “Burn” “Open” (this song is seven minutes long, but has awesome imagery in the story of excess at parties and how sometimes you and your mate want different things) “How Beautiful You Are” (this is a fantastic song whose opening lyrics grab you. “What to know why I hate you? Well, I’ll try and explain... remember that day in Paris, when we’d wander through the rain?” I can go on and on and on (and on) about this band, but I won’t. Great video!

I still remember buying Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me as a sophomore in college in ‘87 on cassette and playing the album and listening to Just Like Heaven. Just hearing Boris Williams’ drum roll gave me chills then and still does to this day. As a friend of mine once stated when this came on the Muzak while we were in the gym, ‘Ron, this is the greatest pop/ rock song ever written.’ I couldn’t disagree with my friend Bob. Robert and the guys have been such an integral part of my life for close to forty years. JLH, is a perfect song. Lyrics, vocal, playing, arrangement are flawless. Lastly, it has been my ringtone for about 13 years and counting.

This is probably the most popular song by a very popular band. The cure is considered an alternative band. They are arguably the most popular alternative band or at least one of them from the 1980s. I’m surprise that she never heard it before. It is still played in speakers over the store Soundsystem sometimes when you go shopping. She must be pretty young to have never heard of before. There’s a reason why he’s playing so much though. It’s great!

I remember the Cure from the early 80’s to the 90’s, and always appreciated them, but never bought their music, made a point to go to a show (and I saw a lot of shows in the 80’s). There was a always a place in my pop heart for for Friday I’m in Love. My nephew turned 30 in 2016 and for his birthday wanted me his old uncle to go to a Cure concert with him and his girlfriend (he has a soft spot for the 80’s). I was looking forward to it as an event and just hoped for my nephew that musically the aging band wouldn’t disappoint. They played a really long, entertaining, set of song after great song - I’d forgotten how many they had! - and while clapping for the encore both my nephew agreed wow great, wish they’d played this or that, but we would have gone home satisfied. Then they came out, Robert Smith apologized for his voice being shit (it was holding up great), then they played 2 encores I think of 5 songs each and just blew us away. It only took me 35 years to become a _real_ fan.
