Simon wrote this when he was in London shortly before his and Art’s first album was released. It was a commission from The Seekers (Georgy Girl) and was co-written by the group’s rhythm guitarist Bruce Woodley. “Sound of Silence” hit big and The Cyrkle opened for S&G on their first concert tour. Paul offered the song to The Cyrkle and they had a huge hit with it right afterwards. The Seekers released their version of the song almost simultaneously and didn’t even reach the Top 40. Needless to say, Woodley fumed and a friendship was extinguished. Thanks Tim & Harri.

I remember back in 1966 when I was just a 12-year-old boy. This song was a monster summer hit for the Cyrkles pronounce Circles. We were in Coney Island Amusement Park in Brooklyn New York City and this song was playing on the loudspeakers. What memories and what a time I and my friends had at Coney Island Amusement Park.

Wow! Thats amazing. You're right, it was written by Bruce Woodley and Paul Simon in 1966. It was a huge hit and played on the radio all the time. At the time I'd never heard of Simon and Garfunkel yet. I love this song because it always takes me back to '66, which was a wonderful year for me.

That reminds me of the coated cardboard records you could could cut off the back of cereal boxes. The Archie's Sugar, Sugar was on the back of Super Sugar Crisp, of course! But there were several other his on the boxes, The Monkeys had Last Train to Clarksville and and a few other big hits on Post cereal boxes and I can't remember which company it was, but several Jackson 5 hits were on cereal boxes too! Wish I had kept some of them.

@@ptournas I vaguely remember those. I don’t know if I ever actually tried to play one. I’m sure I would have if we had gotten a box with Sugar, Sugar or Last Train to Clarksville. I loved both of those.

The Cyrkle (Circle) were one band that could claim that The Beatles opened for them. In the mid 1960's the Beatles manager, Brian Epstein, decided to expand his business into America and take on some American clients. Someone told him about a band from New Jersey called The Rhondells. Epstein decided to take them on as clients and the rest is history. First, he changed their name to The Cyrkle (John Lennon actually came up with the unique spelling) then he got them a recording contract with Columbia records. In 1966 The Beatles were getting ready to go on their final tour and Epstein decided The Cyrkle would be The Beatles opening act on the American leg of the tour. This caused The Cyrkle to become an overnight success. The tour exposure helped their first album produce 2 big hits, "Red Rubber Ball" and "Turn Down Day.' You could not turn on the radio in 1966 without hearing one of these songs. One day they were all supposed to play at an outdoor venue, and it looked like it was going to rain. The promoters didn't want to reschedule the show or refund any money so they sent The Beatles out first, hoping they could get their set in before it rained. It didn't rain and The Cyrkle decided to do their set anyway and were happy that half the audience stuck around to see them. This became a big joke that The Cyrkle were so big, they actually had The Beatles open for them.

Right on, Harri. Definitely one of the best pop songs of the 60s. The joy and energy on these guy’s faces makes it even better. This must have been resurrected from some tv show at the time ( remember, there were no ‘videos’ in that era.). I always loved the song, it got tied to a specific happy (morning) event in my life. But I had never seen the video until a couple years ago. Hooray to KZbin for bringing this back in such a buoyant video. Great reaction!!!

There were so very many great tunes that came out in the '50s, '60s and '70s it will take you a long time to hear them all. But it will be well worth the time and effort. IMHO my generation came out with some of the best and most positive music ever. It's all I listen to even now all these years later.

Thanks @Cynthia... This has always been one of my favorite songs. After it was a hit, Simon offered the Cyrkle another song that he didn't feel was serious enough for Simon & Garfunkel at the time: "The 59th Street Bridge Song (Feeling Groovy)." The Cyrkle turned it down.

The drummer is my late cousin Marty Fried. They were opening act for The Beatles on their 1966 American tour. They have reformed with two original members and are touring with other 1960’s pop groups. John Lennon named them The Cyrkle. They wanted to play Rhythm and Blues but their label wouldnt have it. Dressed them up like nerds for a Square Audience. Had their own fan club.
