Welcome to my channel! This is a music reaction channel. For the longest time, I've loved creating content on the internet. I started off with a gaming channel right here on KZbin, which eventually turned into a Twitch gaming channel, but as time has gone on I've evolved into doing other things on KZbin. For years now I've wanted to create a music channel on KZbin, and recently just figured "why not?", so it’s time to give this a go! Give me any suggestion you have for music reactions, and I will do my best to get around to them. As music has fallen further out of my life, I figured this would be a great time to get reintroduced to music.

You have to love the Turtles. One of the most underrated and overlooked bands ever, and their music always makes you feel good. They also had a pretty good sense of humor. Just check out the album covers for their 2 greatest hits albums they put out while they were still together. Everyone thought it was so cool when the Beatles did this, no one noticed the Turtles did it first. Check out their song called "You Baby." It's not complicated or anything, just a really good song.

I always love to hear Happy Together, Elenore, You Showed Me and It Ain't Me Babe come up on my endless playlist, but a less major hit for the Turtles, You Baby, has aged very well for me and gets me singing out loud when I hear it now.

the lyrics were meant as a joke by Howard Kaylen, lead singer, not as a natural "innocent time" when there were drugs, riots and the civil rights movement, war protests and cops beating up kids white or black [like at the 1968 Democratic National convention in Chicago across the street in the park during a peaceful protest], unarmed kids at Kent State University gunned down by the National Guard in 1970, and by cops in Jackson State University in Mississippi 2 weeks later, Black people getting the hell beat out of them, hosed down by fire hoses, getting lynched or murdered by the KKK and other loser rednecks all because they wanted equal rights, women being told to stay in the home barefoot and pregnant rather than have career for themselves too. Poverty, starving children. And coffins coming back by the hundreds every week from Vietnam police action [they never declared it a war] with 18 to 35 year old "Soldiers," mostly poor who were drafted into the military because they couldn't afford a college deferment for 4 years from military, yet had no right to vote until they were 21, who died for nothing....assassinations of the nation's leaders - President Kennedy, his brother senator Robert Kennedy, and Civil Rights Leader Dr. Martin Luther King. Hardly a simpler time of innocence...

I was 14 when this song came out and was played often on the radio stations. And coincidentally, I met and had a very brief puppy love situation with a girl I met from a different school at a party at that time. We would meet at a park on the weekends. Her name was Eleanor.

Right and even though it wasn't serious it was a hit. People just liked it. It was catchy. Still catchy. Also Howard worked with Zappa at some point.

Howard Kaylan and Mark Volman joined Frank Zappa and the Mothers after the dissolution of Turtles. Shortly after that, the Turtles' bass player, Jim Pons, also became one of the Mothers.

From my youth, "Elenore, gee I think you're swell" is great! You don't hear "gee" or "swell" any more. Late teens when this came out, and I turned up the radio every time. Thanks for a great reaction to a great old song from another time! A good time!

Let's be clear. Howard Kaylen of the Turtles told this story in a documentary I saw. the producers were looking for another hit after Happy Together. they were putting the pressure on, so Howard Kaylen was getting fed up with it. He wrote what he considered silly words, lame hackneyed d phrases he'd thought the producers would totally reject. ...the word "swell" was used in the 1930's and 40's as a rendition of "really cool." The phrase was of style. and come on the line "your looks intoxicate me even though your folks hate me" was big damn joke, as was rhyming "groovy and movie" on Howard's part. The producers liked the song and lyrics, it became a big hit to Howard's shock. the joke was now on him.

I love the harmony at the end-their really wailing!! Turtles were a quirky band as well with quirky songs-particularly Umbassa the Dragon-I also like chicken Little Was right but prefer the harder tinged single version as opposed to the album version. Also their nod to the Beach Boys-Surfer Dan is also a good listen.

Another great group from the 60's. The Turtles are an American rock band formed in 1965. "Happy Together" is their biggest hit in 1967. But they had a lot of great songs such as "It Ain't Me Babe", "Let Me Be", "You Baby", "Grim Reaper Of Love", "Can I Get To Know You Better", "She'd Rather Be With Me", "You Know What I Mean", "She's My Girl", "You Showed Me" etc.

I agree that way too many lyricists are great at writing half a song - and then the band just repeats the lyrics again to finish out the time. I love the innovative drum licks in 'Elenore'. You mention that this song was done as a parody. The Turtles did a whole album of musical parodies called 'Battle of the Bands'.

Saw the main players in the incarnation as Flo & Eddie, which was, at that time, "Florescent Leech & Eddie". It was Kaylan and Vollman. Very clever chaps, rather like an American Gentle Giant, though not as avant-garde, musically. First rate all. And all the work you are putting in will absolutely ensure that you become a very great songwriter and composer when the time comes.

Great reactions to a classic oldie. The backstory you related was funny as hell and like you makes me like it more. Always loved the inclusion of 'etc.', but the wrong reason. Probably repeating but FYI the 2 Lead Singers, Howard + Mark left the Turtles in '71(?) and toured w Frank Zappa. They were billed as Flo +Eddie. Great vocals.

Some of the worst lyrics in the history of rock and roll. Which is what makes it such an awesome song, because they pull it off. Their best, in my opinion. Wonderfully stupid lines like "You're my pride and joy, et cetera" or "Your lips intoxicate me / even though your folks hate me." Just frickin' fabulous.
