Great jam of a song. This song went nowhere when it was released as a single in 1964, but when the Isley Brothers reworked the song in 1973 and released it as "That Lady," it became a huge hit for the band. The new version features younger brother Ernie. on guitar.

I remember seeing them at a rock show in Coney Island back in 1967 or 1968 and they did the original version. They also did many other great songs, including my favorite, "Shout", both parts. The other stars were Ben E King, The Coasters, The Manhattans, The Platters, Wilson Pickett and Junior Walker and the All Stars, who also played backup[ for all the singers.

That’s Ernie Isley playing on all the Isley Brothers Tracks, Ernie was a young teenager when he started learning to play guitar from Jimi Hendrix, that’s why their styles are so familiar, Ernie Isley is one of the most underrated guitar players of this century….when Jimi was playing guitar for the Isley Brothers, Ernie was a teenager, and not part of his older brother’s Isley Brothers, he joined his 3 older brothers much later, at which time Jimi Hendrix had passed several years before, all the guitar solos or guitar playing on Isley Brothers records from 1974 up until today is all Ernie Isley…..

Damn right Bassblvd, Ernie is one of the greatest guitarist. I saw them live in 77. Never will forget that show. How about Hope You Feel Better? Ernie kills it on that song. So cool
@heentlasaa9974 Жыл бұрын
Damn Straight Bassblvd, Fritzw75 is Spot on. Ernie plays Awesome Guitar on "Hope you feel better Love," his Rhythm is on Step and he just Catapults into his Screaming Lead Solo, it's the Closest to Hendrix and blows alot of Guitarists away. He's ignored because he's Bad and to mention Ernie would cause those doing Polls to Reconsider their Nominees.

Great performance by the Isley's. Too few reactors to this soulful group. A few have reacted to this song and even fewer to "It's Your Thing" and "Shout". But I have never seen any reactions at all to what I consider their two best songs; "This Old Heart of Mine" (1966), and "Twist and Shout" (1962, before the Beatles covered it). Wish someone would do them.

I have their "Heat is On," Lp I like "For the love of You, Fight the Power, Make me say it again Girl, Voyage to Atlantis, Choosey Lover & Shout." Ernie Isley’s guitar defined a 70s era of funk music for the Isley Brothers. He was cutting edge with his Stratocaster on That Lady. Later groups tried to emulate. The riffs were all Ernie with perhaps some influence by Jimi Hendrix. But he learned guitar wah-wah skills with help from Charlie Pitts. Hendrix had left the Isley’s before Ernie started playing in the band. One other interesting note is Ernie was self-taught.

Love this song. At the age of 17 I purchased this on 8-track solely for this song, my first black addition to my music collection. I was inspired by Curtis Mayfield's "Diamond in the Back" which I enjoyed very much, then learning that he also wrote this classic gem. No wonder. I am ashamed to admit that at that time I did not know that black musician's could play this type of sound, specifically Ernest Isley's guitar. It was very much a learning experience for me that I have remembered and still live by to this day; anyone of any color, creed, nationality or religion with a musical inclination can play any tune they hear given the proper conditions. Another reaction I'd love to see you do is Ronald Isley and Burt Bacarach, "The Look of Love." It really showcases the talent of Mr. Isley.

Jimi Hendrix lived with the Isley Brothers for about two and a half years. The Isley Brothers took Hendrix in after hiring him as their backing guitarist in 1963, when he had nowhere to stay. The family gave him a spare room in their mother's house. Hendrix was the only member of the band allowed to live with them, and he was never charged for meals or room and board. He would play his guitar in his room and when dinner was being prepared. He would also stay at the back of the house during Sunday dinners so the other band members wouldn't see him eating. Hendrix toured with the Isleys for most of 1964, but left the band near the end of October after becoming tired of playing the same set each night. His guitar work on the 1964 single "Testify" helped shape the group's sound and influenced Ernie Isley, the band's youngest member.
