There was a husband a wife couple in the Mamas and the Papas. The guy on the guitar, John Phillips was married to the blonde girl, Michelle. They had a daughter, Chyna Phillips who along with Carnie and Wendy Wilson (daughters of Brian Wilson from The Beach Boys) were the singing group Wilson Phillips. They sang the hit song "Hold On" which was a chart topper in 1992. John and Michelle also had another daughter Mackenzie Phillips who was a successful actress starring in the TV sitcom One Day at a Time.

John Phillips, the one playing guitar, formed the group. Denny sometimes performs the solo vocals. Michelle and John were in a relationship after the group was formed. John has a daughter(Mackenzie Phillips) from a previous relationship. Mackenzie starred in the film "American Graffiti" with Ron Howard and Harrison Ford. She also costarred in the TV show "One Day at a Time" with actress Valerie Bertinelli (Valerie was married to rockstar Eddie Van Halen). Michelle Phillips also had some acting roles. She starred in the TV drama "Knots Landing" and "Spin City." Cass Elliot also had a successful solo singing career. Michelle is the only surviving member of The Mama's and The Papas.

Other hit songs by the Mamas and the Papas were "I Saw Her Again Last Night" a song about the brief affair between Denny Doherty and Michelle Phillips which caused friction among the group members as you could well imagine, "Twelve Thirty", "Dedicated to the One I Love" with Michelle Phillips on lead vocals, "Words of Love" and "Dream a Little Dream of Me" with Cass Elliot on lead vocals, "Creeque Alley" an autobiographical telling of their career in music, "Look Through My Window", and be sure to check out Cass's solo "Make Your Own Kind of Music". Michelle is the last surviving member of the group.

Mozart once said "Silence is very important. The silence between the notes is as important as the notes themselves”. A very effective 4 beats of silence in the climax of the song here...background music here = "The Wrecking Crew" studio musicans of the west coast, Los Angeles area. Famous musicians with "no name." Hal Blaine was often the drummer on what seems like a million hit records, and often, the only girl musician, Carole Kaye, on bass and sometimes guitar. It didn't take long, when she started studio work in the mid to late 1950's, for all the guys to start treating her with lots of respect, she was THAT good, [You might hear the guys saying "Damn, that chick is great!"] she pretty soon felt like one of "the gang" like a sister in the big family. She was great jazz guitarist and bass player, often making up stuff to improve the song on bass. She's still around, retired.

If you want a little more of the girls singing try "Dedicated to the One I Love". For a different type of song from them try "Creeque Alley". This was strictly a lip synced performance. It was pretty much a requirement back then. Michelle Phillips hated lip-synching so much that she famously ate a banana on stage while appearing on a TV show just to show the industry up.

That harmony is The Mamas and The Papas SOUND - meaning when you hear a Mamas and The Papas song you can recognize it is them by their unique harmony sound... :) Yes, they are performing live on the very famous and popular variety show "The Ed Sullivan Show" that often made music groups and other acts like stand up comedians become famous overnight. Yes they are peforming live but they are lip synching because if it was live singing they would be singing into microphones with wire cords.I am glad that you are reacting to them!

So glad your playing The Mamas and the Papas music! I love their music. Would love to see you react to more and also of Cass Elliot when she went solo! A little history……John Phillips (guitar player) and Michelle Phillips (blonde) were married. Cass Elliot (heavy set) had a HUGE crush on Denny Doherty. Even though he loved Cass he didn’t have those same feelings for her because of her weight (which he admitted years later). Denny and Michelle ended up having an affair with each other and this really crushed Cass! This happened very early in their group and it caused a lot of turmoil. Not only that, Cass and John were always going at it and it’s been said that John hated the fact that Cass was the most popular one of the group. She eventually left and went solo. As far as the group, there harmonies were always spot on. Other songs you should listen to are “I Call Your Name”, “I saw you again Last Night”, “Sing for your supper” or “Words of Love”! The last two, Cass sings the lead and you can hear how powerful her voice is. As far as Cass singing solo….i would suggest “Dream a little dream of me” or “Make your own kind of music”!

I'm not sure why Cass Elliot (Mama Cass) was not on the pic. She was with them, I think, when they broke up. She did solo work after the break up. She died in 1974. Weird fact: She died in the same bedroom of a London apartment that Keith Moon of The Who died in, they died 4 years apart and they were both 32 when they died.

The Beesleys Music: The only thing "LIVE" here is (maybe, for all we know) the sound of the "Hollywood Palace" TV show audience clapping as their "lip synching" to their recording studio vocals and music faded away just as it does on their original studio recording / record, because IT IS the same original studio recording / record being played here. The guitar was NOT "live"(that electric guitar is not even PLUGGED IN) and ALL of the music heard is from the same recording studio version.

Nevertheless, virginiapudelko6280 is correct. John Phillips, who put the band together, was concerned about Cass Elliott's weight and appearance. This band was not a group of chums who sang together. This was a group of professional singers hired to be in a band. They did not get along offstage. They were together only from 1966 to 1968. But darn, they were good.
