The drummer, Stewart Copeland, is absolutely killing it on this song. He does one of my favorite drum fills ever near the end of the song after Sting sings "Sending out an SOS" the fourth time, with the last two reggae-like anticipated hits on the cymbal and snare.

Sometimes such bottles are found. There were two different "message in a bottle" stories in the news earlier this year. In January a woman in Norway found one dropped by a school girl in Scotland back in 1996. In February an elementary school student in Norway found a miniboat launched by middle schoolers in New Hampshire in 2020. "Hundred billion bottles washed up on the shore..."

I met an astronaut who was in the space station. He found a bottle whilst in training, on the Florida sea shore near Canaveral. The message contained the person's email address in it. He emailed them whilst he was up in the Space Station. How crazy is that?

The image of the man shipwrecked sending out a message in a bottle is a metaphor for the feelings of alienation and loneliness so many people feel now. (It was the 80's when he wrote it, but the feelings have only gotten stronger since then.) The idea is that he's desperate for contact, to reach out but he doesn't know how. Then when he does, he's stunned to realize how many other people are living on their own desert islands, believing they're alone.

Police started out in the punk scene of the 70s. They evolved themselves into a band that had a punk, reggae, rock and pop sound. Sometimes individual songs, but mainly all infused together. Check out Every Little Thing She Does next.

There was a strong reggae and ska influence on British music back in the '80s. If you like The Police then you'll love The English Beat (known just as The Beat in the UK) who only made 3 albums but left an incredible collection of songs: I Confess, Save it for Later, Tears of a Clown (Smokey Robinson cover), Hands Off She's Mine, Mirror in the Bathroom, Too Nice to Talk to, Can't Get Used to Living You.

My favourite Police song. A perfect pop record, with an incredibly tight three-piece band, all superb musicians, none of them showing off - everything they do is in service of the song and the groove - or should I say grooves. Stewart Copeland is the MVP here, as others have said. He is *brilliant* and so subtle, varying beats and tempos and rhythms in a way that very few drummers can.

Part of the UK new wave scene back in the days. Lot of groups were blending punk rock and reggae and ska. Electronics.. The Police were one of them. Did it well. Punk groups and reggae groups from Jamaica, West Indies used to play at smaller venues together (US, UK, Caribbeans) underground clubs. Music that had common themes too. Political, uplifting, upbeat, etc. Appreciated each others music 😆 thats how it all started.. Anyways ska punk is popular too. See No Doubt (Gwen Stefani), Less than Jake, Mighty Bosstones, etc. Bruno Mars was influenced by the Police too. Song "Locked Out in Heaven" a few yrs back. Sang with Sting on stage a few times too. 🎸

Message in a bottle reminds me of my late father he always put a message in a bottle every time he went to the coast here in Norfolk uk ,he had reply’s from Holland ,France Norway to name a few ,he kept in touch with them for many years and his ashes were put to see by or local lifeboat with a bottle .

sting is the most lyrically gifted songwriter of my and, frankly, any generation. his ability to create sonic spaces and rhythms with words is awe-inspiring. the police were a once in a lifetime trio of brilliant musicians and creaters. your next police songs are "don't stand so close to me" and "every little thing she does is magic" (my personal most fav). they have SOOO many good songs, not to mention sting's FANTASTIC solo stuff, which is for another time and another set of reacrions lol.

The Police basically played what was known in the uk as " White Reggae " as denoted by one of their early albums " Regatta de Blanc " or in english " White Reggae " . This was not a slur on true reggae , just that it was a different type of reggae. Sting was a great admirer of Bob Marley & all reggae in general.

The Police did a more Punk/Ska New Wave back then, but also heavily influenced by Reggae. Ska was developed in Jamaica and that whole vibe was wrapped up in their sound as well.

The band that brought us "New Wave." Along with The Cure, The Tubes, Flock of Seagulls, Devo, The Fixx, etc, etc. But, it was The Police that blew it up. Saw em open for The Knack right when "My Sharona" was getting ready to become an FM staple. Then, a few months later, "Roxanne" blew up. $6 and a fake ID got you in the door lol...at a Discotheque complete with the big, mirrored ball, and the electric bull riding machine lol. Also, The Police don't get enough credit as great musicians...Top-shelf.

The Police became globally popular in the late 1970s and early 1980s. They were part of the British new wave scene & they played a style of rock influenced by punk, reggae & jazz. Great reaction! I saw The Police in Hawaii in Blaisdell Arena in 1980 or '81 I believe. Went with a bunch of Navy shipmates. Sting played stand up bass most of the time. Had a great time. During the break a buddy of mine and I ran into Tom Selleck who had recently arrived in the islands to shoot season one of "Magnum, P.I." He was a really nice guy. You could drink a beer with him and never think he was a star. His next door neighbor was Carol Burnett and she was always the same way with fans. Sorry, I digress. Don't take much for an old swabbie to lapse into "sea stories". The Police, like a number of amazing groups I listened to, were a trio. And still they could fill an arena with gorgeous music that would just surround you.

Stuart Copeland puts such a driving beat into this track but Andy Summer's chord progression in this song is for me what makes it, they are minor chords with an add 9th and it's a stroke of genius.

YES! Back in the day, throwing bottles with notes into bodies of water was a big thing, for sure. No wonder that it was the same era when we tied notes to (latex) balloons and released them by the dozens. And this was so long ago, that "polluting" the water with our bottles never even occurred to us, and these were GLASS bottles. We gleefully heaved them into the waters.

The real genius in the structure of the composition - reminiscent of "Take Five" by Dave Brubeck - is that Andy Summers is actually keeping the time of the song while Stuart Copeland plays all around the guitar with some incredibly intricate percussion. The only difference is the Take Five used a piano instead of a guitar - incredibly difficult to pull off!!! Brilliant!!!
