In addition to Ronnie Spector's distinctive vocals, it was Phil Spector's incredible "Wall of Sound" production that made the Ronettes so unique. Other girls groups that you need to hit are The Crystals, The Marvellettes, Martha and the Vandellas, The Shirelles, The Chiffons, as well as The Supremes' (before they were "Diana Ross & The....") early stuff like "When The Lovelight Starts Shining" (their first regional hit), "Where Did Our Love Go," "I Hear A Symphony," "Back In My Arms Again," "You Keep Me Hanging On," etc. etc. Tons of hits by these ladies. There are so many good girl groups from the first half of the sixties, and their sound influenced a lot of later songs. Two that I can think of from the end of the seventies are Blondie's "Sunday Girl" (1978) and the B52s' "Give Me Back My Man" (performed in '78 and '79 but not released as a single until 1980). And on those bouffant hairdos of the end of the fifties and the first half of the sixties, they were initially formed by ratting/backcombing the hair into a huge mass and then smoothing out and styling the surface, followed by massive amounts of industrial-strength hairspray. Later, hairpieces and wigs were used. When bouffant hairstyles were at their peak of chic in the early sixties, hairdressers were as famous as fashion designers, with names like Alexandre and Kenneth on everyone's lips.

In college we did an old fashioned summer theater program where we did a new show every two weeks. The first one (and the only one I remember now) was called Leader Of The Pack. It was a great musical about Phil Specter’s Wall of Sound. They were having trouble finding an actress/singer to play Darlen Love, and then a beautiful young lady sauntered on stage and used her classical opera training and blew everyone away. She pretty much owned the show every time she stepped on stage. BTW, Darlene Love was not only a paragon of the musical scene of the early 60’s, but she was also a great actress. She played Danny Glover’s wife in all 4 of the Lethal Weapon movies.

She happily posed for some pics, even after driving hours through a snow-storm to get to the venue... the club had to stay open late, and shut off alcohol, but nobody left... I hope you will see some actual videos... (p.s...
