Mama Cass Elliot had a solo career as well. If you've ever seen Janis Joplin''s performance of "Ball & Chain" at Monterey Pop, Cass Elliot is the female spectator who keeps saying, "Wow!" at the end.

Cas's influence on the music of the time went far beyond her performances on stage or in the studio. Her production efforts and keen insight boosted many music careers, a fact for which she is rarely recognized. In fact, it was she who introduced Steven Stills to an unknown struggling musician named Neil Young.

Cass was known for her power but Michelle could belt it out too. Great example is Dedicated to the One I love, live on Ed Sullivan. Ed's show had a full orchestra to back any singers or bands. They often rearranged songs to be shorter. By mid 60s he was letting them do whole songs.

The Mamas and the Papas had their origins in New York City as parts of the Greenwich Village Folk music scene of the early '60s. Denny Doherty came from Halifax, NS🍁and John Phillips from Virginia. Cass Elliot was from Maryland and had a Jazz and Theatre background. Eventually they went to California where Michelle Phillips joined the group. They merged their Folk roots with the Beat/Pop style of music to form their own unique sound. They had 7 Top 10 hits between 1965 and 1968. John Phillips also wrote the song "San Francisco (Be Sure To Wear Flowers in Your Hair)", recorded by Scott McKenzie. After the breakup they each attempted solo careers, with Cass achieving the most success with 3 Top 40 singles.

Denny Doherty singing lead and Mama Cass Elliott (The heavyset girl) who both had awesome voices along with Michelle Phillips who was married to John and also had a good voice were the Mamas and Papas. Sadly they are all deceased except Michelle, she is the only one still living. I grew up with this music, I loved it then and I STILL do.

The Mamas and the Papas were a great 4-piece in the '60s. They did a song called Creeque Alley with lyrics about other people in bands at the time, and whom they knew, and how they 'made it'. Great song you should check out. Yes, Cass Elliot had an incredible voice as did Denny Doherty (who sang the solo bit). They knew one another before this band, and he was in Cass' band called the Mugwumps. If you want to check out an unusual song from the '60s but that is just lovely as can be, go for the baroque pop song by the Left Banke called Pretty Ballerina. They had a hit with that and with Walk Away Renee. The composer was 15 year old Michael Brown, band member in love with the bassist's girlfriend at the time. The singer was 17 year old Steve Martin Caro who had a perfect voice for their songs. Additionally, the song was written in Lydian mode, which is not usual as I expect you know. ❤
@nmt2k2Ай бұрын
Written by John and Michelle Phillips and recorded by Barry McGuire, with John and Michelle Phillips handling the backing vocals. The song was already pressed on McGuire's album "This is Precious Time" when Lou Adler brought in Cass Elliot for backing vocals and Denny Doherty on lead. They erased McGuire's vocal track and put Doherty's in place of it and release it as a Mamas and Papas single.

You have a great ear for the harmonies of The Mamas and The Papas. Legend has it that during the recording of the album California Dreamin' (If You Can Believe Your Eyes and Ears) appears on, Phil Spector walked into the mixing booth and asked the sound engineer, "where are the extra voices coming from?". The harmonies were so precise, the collective voices created subharmonics that made it seem like more than four people! Truly astonishing, considering the era; no digital, no resonate overlays, no autotune. Just pure talent, plain and simple.

The guy playing the guitar is John Phillips, who did the arrangements for their music. The girl on the end was his wife at the time, Michelle Phillips. The girl with the more powerful voice is Cass Elliot, who sang lead in a number of their songs. The guy singing the lead part in this is Denny Doherty. The members all had a folk music background, which is part of what led to this folk-rock group's sound. Edit: It occurs to me that I could add that John and Michelle Phillips' daughter Chynna Phillips grew up to be a member of the pop trio, Wilson Phillips. The other two girls in the trio are daughters of Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys. Their names are Carnie and Wendy. Their mother is a less well-known singer from the 60s named Marilyn Wilson-Rutherford (formerly just Rutherford of course).
