For us country boys we know what that name means. When the night is so cold you need three dogs in bed with you to stay warm enough. Their songs are legendary. JOY TO THE WORLD (Jeremiah was a bullfrog0), I'VE NEVER BEEN TO SPAIN (Waylon Jennings covered that). AN OLD FASHIONED LOVE SONG, BLACK AND WHITE, and ELI'S COMING are some of their best. You can't go wrong with any of them. They never made a bad song.

Celebrate, Easy to be Hard, One, The Show Must Go on. Adding Mama Told Me not to Come, that's about 10 hits in 6 years, I probably missed 1 or 2 others. that's a good run for a popular band. Most of the time they had good writers outside of the band rather than having the pressure writing their own tunes all of the time. But they knew how to put their own successful spin on those tunes and make them bis...perhaps many of those songs would have never been heard without them.

This hit was released in 1970 july. I was a full blown flower child, hanging out with my hippy cats. Smoking weed. Playing guitar. Discussing social inequalities, politics, and trying to find a solution to so many issues in this country and the world!. Thank you guys for this great music. What most kids don’t realize is that their parents are genuinely the ONLY people who want good things for them. There is no agenda other than to see you happy and safe. It’s not always about controlling you-it’s about learning from their mistakes and passing that knowledge on. When you are ingesting mind altering substances/incapacitated at a party ie passed out-you are at risk-you could find yourself at the mercy of strangers and left behind by your friends. A lot of people don’t catch the whole ‘sugar in your tea’ thing... I was 8 in the 70s when this song came out and my dope fiend cousin was like ‘duh... sugar cubes, man - LSD’ I was like... ‘duh? dude, I’m eight!’ I think all six guys were technically ‘in the band’, btw - think they just picked the three founders to keep it simple.

The official commentary included in the CD set Celebrate: The Three Dog Night Story, 1965-1975 states that vocalist Danny Hutton's girlfriend, actress June Fairchild (best known as the "Ajax Lady" from the Cheech and Chong movie Up In Smoke) suggested the name after reading a magazine article about Aboriginal Australians, in which it was explained that on cold nights they would customarily sleep in a hole in the ground while embracing a dingo, a native species of wild dog. On colder nights they would sleep with two dogs and, if the night were freezing, it was a "three dog night

It actually cones from the aboriginals in Australia. Depending on how cold it was they would sleep with one, two or three dogs. In 1970 they explained the name.

That was the seventies. Parties are not the same as they were back then. Drugs were not as prevalent as they are now. Thats why Momma told me not to come. It was a different time. Not like today where anything goes. Oh to go back in time.
