This song was my introduction to Tool half a lifetime ago. It still gives me chills after decades of listening to it. Part of me is jealous of anyone getting to experience Tool songs for the first time. Part of me pities them, that their life before this point did not have this music as part of its soundtrack. “Boredom’s not a burden anyone should bear”

I remember on MTV, this video was called Track 1 as opposed to Stinkfist...can't imagine why?....possibly my favorite Tool song...playing with the question (both literally and metaphysically) of alternatives to boredom...like a lot of Maynard's lyrics, there is the face value, and then there's the layers of symbolism that he leaves for you to discover, if you do choose. It's not mandatory to enjoy the experience, it's just there for those who care for such things. For thirty years, I have greatly appreciated those options...

This is my favorite song of all time, ever, by anyone. It’s one of those songs that means different things to different people. For me, I had a moment of revelation listening to this in a really dark time in my life, and the lyrics “How can this mean anything to me if I really don’t feel a thing at all” brought me a point of view I desperately needed. I base my outlook on almost everything on that sentiment now. If it means nothing, if I don’t feel anything positive, I dismiss it from my life entirely. Which is one way of interpreting the meaning here. The pointless clinging to a negative need that hurts you, and the realization to let that go for yourself.

This one's a banger. It was one of their most conventional song structures, verse chorus verse chorus bridge chorus. Made it great for radio. But it still showcases very distinctive Tool elements. The switch from very clean to scream vocals, the time signature change from verse to chorus, prominent/audible bass, and the added 9th when they want a pretty chord. Legendary song and legendary band. The mtv video is a work of art in its own right.

Love that you got to Stinkfist. It is very enjoyable watching you go down the Tool rabbit hole. Eulogy and H. need to be on list Love the channel man!

To think I was 15 years old in 1996 when this was released and I heard the album "Ænima" for the first time with friends, starting off with this one, following with "Eulogy", "H", "Forty-six & Two", "Hooker...", "Ænema", "Pushit" AND "Third Eye" on the SAME ALBUM! My mind was properly blown - and still is!

The drop hit hard as hell because it's prefaced with that guitar note 'you didn't like' . You'll see on the 5th or 50th listen. Keep it up man, love your channel!

You make a great point about how Danny stands out more than most bands, that's something I've always loved about Tool, it's not just vocals and lead guitar, all 4 "instruments" carry equal weight. Maynard rarely stands out front alone, many times he stands toward the back and let's the rest of the band be the focus.

This was the first TOOL song I ever heard and that was at 22 back in the 90s. I'm 50 now and still listen to them daily.

They close every concert with this song, an extended version. You need to see them.

You're going to love the hell out of the rest of these early albums... So absolutely wicked... Looking forward to joining along with you as you discover them for the first time. Tool and Pearl Jam are the best bands of their generation for me. These two bands make up the bulk of what I listen to anymore.
