The song was written (and first recorded) by Neil Diamond in the '60s. These English guys gave it the reggae vibe and it became a huge hit in the early '80s.
@tarheel74064 жыл бұрын
Actually I believe some early 70s era reggae artist covered the song, and UB40 thought they were covering that artist. They didn't know it was originally a Diamond song until the band researched the credits for release. At least that's my understanding.
@walterpanovs4 жыл бұрын
True, there were several covers of the song soon after its original release, and in various genres (including country). One was by a Jamaican group back in '69. I'm guessing UB40 somehow became aware of that version. In the late '70s and early '80s music with a reggae or ska sound was very popular in the UK (and some of that popularity crossed over to the USA as well).

Rap is tunelesss drivel added by people without musical talent anyway. This is a cover of a great song by Neil Diamond, not as good as the original. Note that it is supposed to be about a sad person turning to alcohol for comfort after losing his girl. I don't think the reggae beat is even appropriate for it.

@@bodybalanceU2 The former rather than the latter; I wasn't the person compaining that there was no rap (which is not part of the song) on the end. I am joyful of the fact that I have access to so much great music on KZbin, but I am not a grinning idiot who just accepts everything regardless, I regard it as OK to say what one doesn't like (and why) as well as what one does, as long as you don't go round insulting people. Is there anything in my post there that is factually incorrect? I cannot pretend to like rap if I really don't. Do you believe that a reggae beat is appropriate to the song words? Do you believe that the rap at the end improves the song? Feel free to disagree with me.

Now what Gen Z artists make is about cursing words nudity and sex (explicitly)... West Indian, especially Jamaican culture has had a huge influence on British culture and music. Even when Britain was a slaving nation slaves were not allowed to be kept in Britain. The first big immigration of black people was from the West Indies in the late 1940's so British black culture is very West Indian especially at the start (in the last 30-40 years there are strong communities from Africa countries that have formed too though). Cities like London and Birmingham (where UB40 are from) got a major dose of reggae influence in their music which led to scenes like Ska and 2Tone music. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMT_Empire_Windrush For other British music with a strong West Indian influence you should really check out "Ghost Town" by The Specials.. @@turdferguson400 Yes, but he is a young guy and maybe not aware of some of the old reggae artists. As with other genres of music its great that he and other youngsters appreciate music I was listening to over 50 years ago.

Not the version with Astro's rap 😔 They took this and made it theirs. Even Neil Diamond now plays this version

Uh oh- another cut version- they cut of the end where they basically are pretty much like rapping to the beat- you might wanna find the FULL version J -for real -you did miss some good stuff- and yep, we were all swayin’ to this back in the day, huge hit- but it is a cut off version- 😞. 💛✌️✨

The original version is best. The red red wine, you make me feel so fine inter lude. I think it ruined the song

This song always makes me happy and bouncey. Even though the words are actually sad. Me too. I didn't know it was 2 white dudes either. The video kinda doesn't really go with the song.

They're Brummies.. It's the nickname for people from Birmingham in the UK.. UB40 is in reference to a unemployment card you had to produce when signing on for unemployment benefits in the 80's..

UB40 was a UK Reggae act that was huge in the 80s and 90s. One of the more racially and ethnically diverse acts in Pop history, they come from English, Welsh, Irish, Jamaican, Scottish and Yemeni parentage. They were hugely political and strong proponents of socialism and Leftist politics. In fact, UB40 was the name of government welfare forms at the time. Their first LP cover was just a blank UB40 form. Many of their best songs and early hits were Reggae protest songs, but the only songs of theirs that hit in the US were their Reggae-style cover songs. "Red Red Wine" (US#1, 1988) was actually a cover of a minor, largely forgotten Neil Diamond single from two decades earlier (US#62, 1968). The UB40 Reggae version had failed to crack the US Top30 when it was originally released (US#34, 1984), but managed to become a #1 hit in most English speaking territories in 1983 (UK, IRE, CAN, NZ, NED). A near-constant chart presence in the UK throughout the 1980s, their US chart success besides "Red Red Wine" continued with their hit duet with Chrissie Hynde of Pretenders on a cover (1985 - US#28. UK#1.) of the Sonny & Cher classic "I Got You Babe". In 1990, UB40 took the Al Green classic "Here I Am" to US#7 (and #6 on the alternative charts). Later that year, "The Way You Do the Things You Do" (US#6, 1990) was another major hit. Their last MAJOR hit was their contribution to the soundtrack of the 90s Sharon Stone flick, Sliver. It was a cover of Elvis Presley's timeless "(I Can't Help) Falling in Love" (1992 - US#1. UK#1). If you like all these then you should check out their other, more political stuff that was bug in the UK.

See when left alone, we all just love each other. In my youth have fond memories. One of which is by UB40 & ROBERT PALMER called " be my baby, tonight". This goes down well after a day with pals, a little drinkie and a jam with pals you will never forget. Give it a shot, you will not be sorry.

UB40 were definitely known for their reggae-style and for being pioneers in bridging the musical genres - you'll hear it in pretty much all their famous hits to some extent :)
