There's a story behind that famous tear. Apparently Sinead's mother had passed away not too long before this video was filmed, and the line "All the flowers that you planted in the back yard / all died when you went away" totally set her off because that's exactly what happened in her own mother's back yard shortly before - you even hear her adding the word "mama" into the line, where it wasn't intentionally written there. Sinead says she had a very troubled relationship with her mother and that this line hit her hardest of all. It really shows here

I saw an interview where she said this song actually reminded her of her mother who had recently died when she first heard this song. The line about the flowers reminded Sinead of the flowers her mother planted in her yard, thats why she started crying in the video. Always made me cry seeing the emotions Sinead put out singing in this video. Her voice will now make the angels weep. R.I.P. Beautiful lady with a angelic and powerful voice and personality.

Tears of joy and relief then. Sinead talked about abuse and her mom being possesed by the devil. Not a happy childhood and/or relationship with her mom.

For the record, Sinead's version is the definitive version. Period. The history of the track though is years before her version. Prince wrote it for one of his side-projects in 1984. "The Family" recorded it in 1985 and it was on their album of that name and that year. Prince's manager at that time became Sinead's manager a few years later and that's how the song came to her attention. It wasn't offered by Prince nor by The Family. Prince seemingly wasn't super happy with her covering a song of his - as he refused permission for all covers of his songs if the artists were to ask him. Once it became a worldwide smash hit, Prince began to introduce it to his live sets, where it stayed for the next 25 years - being played at most gigs and even in his final piano-only gig. He released a live version as part of a hits compilation in 1993 that became HIS definitive version - a duet with the great Rosie Gaines. I hear the songs as two different beasts as the arrangements between Sinead's and his live versions are so different. However, the final twist is that his original demo was released after his death. And there is a closer arrangement to the Sinead version on there. I think his demo with saxophone by the masterful Eric Leeds is - to my ear - a more poignant version than Sinead's.

I attended a Prince concert where he said of this song, in a pointed way, "this is how it should be sung". I love Prince but I thought "no way man, Sinead's version is the ultimate and trying to put it down just makes you look bad."

I just listened to Prince's demo version of this song and I really like it. Then I listened to the live show version with Rosie and I dislike it so much I could not listen to the full song.

What Sinéad did to this song is like what Whitney did with 'I will always love you- Dolly Parton.. or KD Lang did with Hallelujah- Leonard Cohendid these ladies epitomized those songs. Prince, Dolly Parton and Leonard Cohen knew their song were forever changed and praised those ladies openly.
