Both Dave and Sammy brought their own special magic to Van Halen. There are great songs in both eras!!

Early VH had a youthful party energy. The Sammy era is grown-up VH. Both were great.

I refuse to fight or pick a favorite , VH was growing and changing with each album . I loved the band from the first song to the last . The evolution of music production was growing as well, was a great time to be alive :) Keep rocking , love your channel.

This was the first release for 5150. Dave left the band after 1984 and we were questioning if there would be another Van Halen album. When Sammy joined I know I was excited because of Heavy Metal, 3 lock box, One Way to Rock. It was a different type of rock but rock none the less. When this song came out, it was different Van Halen but still Van Halen. I welcomed it with open arms. Sammy can sing.

Yes, first one released with Hagar. With the flange effect on everything, we didn't know if we really liked it at first. But, of course we did like the album.

Sammy has serious vocal chops. Saw him with VH back in the early 90s and his voice is just as strong live. If you get a chance check out some of his earlier solo work. “I’ll Fall in Love Again” is a banger.

It was this song that first caught my attention, especially Eddie's guitar solo! I was 13 in 1986 at summer camp and this kid let me borrow his Sony Walkman and Eddie's solo just started and I remember loving that funky groove and I was like, "this dude on guitar!" I discovered Van Halen and bought 5150 on cassette. The rest is history.

It is SYNTHESIZER!! Oberheim OB8. I own one. Eddie used Oberheim extensively... Jump, I'll Wait, Why Can't This Be Love, Dreams, Love Walks In and more!! Ed played guitar on these songs as well that's why you hear both. Instead of paying so much attention to the vocalist talk more about the genius who wrote ALL the incredible Van Halen music... Edward!! It's ALL about Ed, the greatest of all time!!

DLR made Van Halen a legendary band. Sammy was the best replacement that Van Halen could ask for. Love them both. This song has synth and guitar. Some people just don’t know what they are talking about.

You’re hearing a Talk Box!!! Sammy era brought sophistication in songwriting, grown-man Vocals … kicking out Dave’s juvenile ways. Eddie’s need/want to get back to the “keys” he mastered as a child. This era was absolutely the best!

It's a fun breakdown to look at those chart numbers! 'Jump' is Van Halen's only no.1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 charts, the company's main chart. Van Halen had three top ten songs on that chart, all of them keyboard tunes (because that's what charts liked at the time). The band had 23 total entries on that main chart, eleven from each era, and one from the second Roth era. Van Halen had 13 songs top the Billboard Mainstream Rock charts. This isn't Billboard's main chart, and is the only chart Van Halen dominated. Eleven of those were from the second era. It's worth noting, however, that the Mainstream Rock chart didn't yet exist when the band released its first three albums; this is important to acknowledge since it's fair to assume that at least one of the singles from the first three albums would have entered the Mainstream Rock chart's top ten. I'd wager that 'You Really Got Me' and 'Dance the Night Away', the band's first top 20 on the main Billboard Hot 100, would have done so had the Mainstream Rock chart existed at the time. Though, that's only speculation, of course. On top of that, Van Halen released only one single in the US from their fourth album Fair Warning. They first entered the Billboard Mainstream Rock charts from their fifth album Diver Down. Van Halen held the record for most no.1s on the Mainstream Rock chart until 2018 when Three Days Grace tied them. My source for all this info is Billboard itself, gathered from their website. In terms of album sales, the original era handily outsold the second era. Acknowledging that the original era has six studio albums while the second has four, it's obvious that with two more albums, the first era could have sold more than the second. However, it's easy to breakdown. Using the rounded numbers available from the RIAA as a source, comparing the original era's first four albums with the total four albums from the second era, the sales numbers look like this: Van Halen - 10 million Van Halen II - 5 million Women & Children First - 3 million Fair Warning - 2 million Total - 20 million 5150 - 6 million OU812 - 4 million For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge - 3 million Balance - 3 million Total - 16 million If we only include the original era's four best selling albums, the breakdown looks like this: Van Halen - 10 million Van Halen II - 5 million Diver Down - 4 million 1984 - 10 million Total - 29 million If we only include the original era's four poorest selling albums, it looks like this: Van Halen II - 5 million Women & Children First - 3 million Fair Warning - 2 million Diver Down - 4 million Total - 14 million Since streaming is the popular source of listening today, looking at Van Halen's top ten most streamed songs on Spotify, only two are from the second era ('Why Can't This Be Love' and 'Can't Stop Loving You', listed at 8 and 10 respectively).

The main part is synth, Edward ad libs all over. The part when Sammy sings over is a mix of guitar over keyboard with Sammy singing over it....there is no talk box.

DLR thought he was bigger than the band. The friction it caused produced good music up to the point that DLR's head exploded like a Supernova. He finally figured out that he needed the band more than they needed him, but that was only after his own failures away from the band. Sammy was an accomplished guitar player as well as a kickass singer. This, along with musical style tastes, allowed VH to use more synths played by Eddie.

Why Can't this be Love, Love Walks In, When it's Love - Sammy era. Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love - Dave era. Too much love during Sam's tenure. Changed the band completely. Alex wouldn't even acknowledge the Sam years in the book he just released. Nothing against Sam, loved him as a solo act, saw him many times. It was just sad that The Mighty Van Halen turned into this.
@williamclifford61122 күн бұрын
I don't like that Alex went to the electronic drums. I've never been a fan of the electronic drums, but I think they had to be in the new Van Halen. Alex started using them on the 1984 album, and that's when Van Halen lost me. I still liked them, but the early Van Halen is way better.

Yeah, the brown sound got all muddied. I generally like the production on 1984 and love EVH's tone, but 5150 is dampened by the limp tone.
@johnconk123 сағат бұрын
He used 2 electronic Simmons kick drums on 1984 and one floor Tom. Thats it. And they sounded amazing on 1984. On 5150 he used Electronic toms too and that's when it became too much..
