Fortunately, the stepfather (Stephen) was not an alcoholic, though he did drink. However, just finding a bottle of beer that Stephen had in the fridge caused Rivers (a teenager at the time) a lot of anxiety due to his estranged father being an alcoholic and leaving the family when Rivers was younger. He was very worried that the situation would repeat with Stephen, and though it didn’t, those feelings really come out in the song. Agree with all you said. When performing live, the band always does or did, this song as the last song of the night. He gets so emotional that it HAS to be the final song of the night.

Little-known fact, Rivers Cuomo (the frontman/main songwriter) used to be the lead guitar player in a progressive/power metal band called Avant Garde. He has serious shredding chops that he's always kept in his back pocket in Weezer's power pop sound.
