It's not hard to see why either. Weird Al's is fun, catchy, and teaches English. Meanwhile Robin Thicke's original version feels very creepy, rapey, and overall just leaves a bad taste in your mouth.

Weird Al is a genius, but i think most people seem to have misunderstood blurred lines. The blurred lines are not consent, like most people seem to think, the blurred lines are between what a "good girl" is and what women actually want. Women have a sex drive, a libido and a right to have sex and like sex without being called slurs like "whore, bitch, slut, ..." The nudity in the music video also shocked many, but since when is that a problem?

@reaphenex6590

While this is true I think Al was more upset with how Prince behaved during an Award Show where they were both to be seated in the same row. Al got a telegram from Prince's management to not make eye contact with Prince during the show. (Al wasn't the only one to receive the telegram that night either.) Despite this Al had always hoped he would come around and let him parody one of his songs and they could put the weird relationship they had behind, sadly not meant to be.

The video also takes a shot at Alanis Morissette’s song “Ironic” by using an animation of “rain on a wedding day”. “Ironic” has been criticized for not really talking about truly ironic situations (though it was pointed out to me that it’s ironic in itself that a song about irony doesn’t contain ironic examples, which is absolutely genius if it was intentional).
@newgrl
@newgrl 2 жыл бұрын
I always call "Ironic", "The totally misnamed song" in my head. There's not a single ironic thing mentioned in that song. So, I guess you could say the whole song is ironic, but I doubt it was intentional. I love the "Ironic" reference here on that chalkboard too.

@@rachelsullivan2926 Was it though? Nowadays Tommy Wiseau says The Room was meant to be a "black comedy" that is intentionally bad in a satirical way, but the people working on it with him say that he was serious about it and thought it would be a good drama film. Watching The Room, it does not feel like other satirical, intentionally bad films like Rubber or Rocky Horror Picture Show. It's harder to judge with a song, because you would still want it to be a good song even if the lyrics are meant to have a comedic value, but to me her claim just feels like her attempting to save face, and it was written straight and then played off later as a joke when people pointed out the problems.

Don't forget: he also keeps the syllable count in the same amount of time already set by the original song. That must make it far more difficult. So rhyming, using words to follow a theme, making those rhyme, following the syllable count and making THAT rhyme, and bringing the song in under the original time of the song being parodied, Al has to do all of that, and does so every time. In summation: Weird Al is absolutely someone worthy of being a role model due to his astounding command of the English language that he uses to make parody songs.

@@lordgenerias That is why Weird Al is seen as an absolute comedic genius as he always knows to keep the parodies in the same rhythm as the original. @@sabin97 the truth is most Americans are just really bad at speaking English. To be fair, it's one of the most difficult languages in the world to master, first because of a lot of stupid rules, second, because so many words are pronounced the same but are spelled completely differently, or related so many words that are spelled and pronounced exactly the same but have completely different meanings or definitions. And let's not talk about the number of completely useless letters found in some of our words. It has the same root meaning in North American English but it has broadly faded out of use as a slur against the mentally disabled on this side of the pond over the last few generations so most people just think of it as a relatively obscure insult. I've mostly heard it used on playgrounds when I was a kid (back in the late 20th century) in Canada and in older and less PC British TV shows and movies (sounds like an insult that might get tossed around on something like The Young Ones or Bottom). The diminutive version (spaz) kind of replaced spastic during the late 20th century, morphed into a generalized insult, and then just became a very dated sounding insult over here.

"Spastic" as a medical term refers specifically to physical/motor disabilities (specifically excessive or uncontrollable muscle tightness, especially in disabilities like cerebral palsy), so I'm a little confused how it ended up as a slur against the *mentally* disabled. It's interesting to hear that it's a big deal over there; in North America it's basically the same as "lame" (the literal meaning of which also refers to physical disabilities, specifically the inability to walk): it may have been an ableist slur centuries ago but by this point it's just a genericized minor insult with no bigoted connotations. Although funnily enough now that I think about it, I think the "incredibly minor insult" version of spastic in North America does have some connection to the original medical term: it still refers to someone who is excessively tense or gets bent out of shape over something, just figuratively speaking instead of literally (and it's usually used more as a low-key affectionate insult than anything genuinely derogatory). Still baffling to me that it apparently jumped meanings entirely to mean "mentally disabled" elsewhere.

Prince was the only artist that NEVER gave Al permission to parody their music.

He never needed the legal permission to do so (read up on the legal doctrine of fair use, and how it covers parody, if you want to know the *why* of it), but he always asked permission as a professional courtesy after getting burned in his early career. Al decided early on that it was in his interest to build bridges with other artists.

The English language has ~171,000 words, whereas Spanish only has ~93,000. I watch a lot of foreign dramas and movies with some absolutely crazy subtitles that I have to interpret on my own from time to time. East Asian cinema can be especially terrible as sentence structure is completely different from Romantic and Germanic languages. So, I'm really ok with non-native speakers doing the best the can with what they know, as long as they get somewhere near what they were trying to say. My problem is when I'm on a mostly English speaking site and it's indecipherable that I get frustrated. Also, Robin Thicke's _Blurred Lines_ is a freakin' terrible song with a good beat. This is a much much better song.

I used to teach English in Korea and it drove me crazy that the franchise running the first two schools where I taught did NOT run their books past the hundreds of native English speakers that taught at their schools. We could have caught so many errors and it wouldn't have cost them a nickel. We'd have done it cheerfully on our own time.
