the debris you found at the top of the chimney is evidence of a fire, and your lucky it didn't catch and go down the flue, please be careful mate & stay safe, and maybe sweep twice a year: from a chimney sweep across the pond 😉

1. To have that much creosote means you probably aren't burning properly. It's a chimney fire waiting to happen. The chimney appears to be on an outside wall which means the smoke cools towards the top and makes more creosote build up there. 2. I have a similar flue cap except that it is hinged. I leave it open in the winter which allows better draft. Also, when the cap is closed, creosote forms on the drip edge and washes down making a mess out of the chimney and roof. Not to mention the expanded metal clogs up and reduces draft. 3. I have never seen a more poorly made chimney cap. The flue tile is cracked too. Makes me wonder what is under all that stone veneer. 4. I want to say you need to clean your chimney during the burn season too, but if you get snow, wherever you are, I wouldn't get on a snow covered metal roof.

Your chimney crud experience concurs with mine. The real crud is within the exterior chimney as it congeals on the cooler inner surface. I actually used a 2X4 to ramrod the upper 3 ft.

It would probably be a good idea to line your chimney with a stainless steel liner, I did it 2-3 years ago and I use a similar chimney cleaner, the liner comes much cleaner, also you can use the cleaner from the ground level and push it up the chimney.

Ahh...yeah...that was bad. I'd do that once a year, unless you like calling the fire department.

I plan on checking once a month this winter.

Just a heads up. English Chimney Sweeps got a particular scrotal cancer. Only they would get. From their jobs. Whether it’s from the chemicals or the fine dust.

It was children that suffered, dermatitis, pulmonary problems, skin warts and if they didn't die of suffocation or burnt alive in the chimney they got scrotal cancer. Rough being a child in Victorian days.
