Cleaning a Chimney From the Bottom Up

As the heating season is quickly approaching, it was time to make sure the chimney on our woodstove was clean and ready for cold weather. This video, #94, is a quick one showing a new tool that I bought to do this job. Previously to clean the chimney, I used an extension ladder and dropped a chimney cleaner from the top. This worked well, but wasn't the easiest thing to do, especially in the winter months when snow would complicate things. So I thought I would give these bottom up chimney cleaners a try. Due to the number of off-brands available, I thought they would just be a gimmick that only half worked, but didn't quite live up to expectations. Surprisingly, I was wrong and the one I bought worked well. The only hiccup was of my own ignorance.

That kid is pretty sharp. Better helper than some adults I've know. Very observant with the details.

Yes, my kids are awesome helpers, even at their young age. I'm excited to see what they do in the future as they grow and mature. Thanks for watching!

Getyour rods all the way up to the cap without hooking them to your drill. You will feel it bump the cap then hook to your drill and work your way down.

I was obsessed with top down, and as I get older I don’t want to be up there anymore, let alone carrying around the 18+ft ladder. Thanks for the vid! lol “you might want to unfix it” … love kids.

I put the whole shaft together and up the chimney before hooking up the drill. Then hook up the drill and slowly work it down then repeat.

That might work better. I will try that next time I clean the chimney. Thanks for the suggestion!

I have same type of chimney with SS liner but mine is inside and is just as high. You showed my concern when trying to go up through and the brush goes beyond the liner. The brush has to go through cause thats where my creosote builds up the most is at the very top, so if it gets stuck I still have to go up on roof.... IMO still need a better mouse trap, also never use steel brush on SS liner, it scratched mine and now I have to clean lot more often....

Even with the driest wood, chimneys need cleaning. Have you ever considered cleaning chimneys as part of your business? Doing it this way would be easy for some chimneys.

Reversing the drill to try to get the brush out....😂 Immediately realized that your video would not be helpful to most. Your son is where that knowledge is at. Look up to him, i doubt he'll steer you wrong.

Thanks for posting a very useful demo. Is the model you're using suitable for all chimney sizes? I have a bird's nest stuck halfway down my chimney and wondering if I could remove it with the same model 'brush you're using, or if there is a chance it will become entangled and get stuck.
@NorthForkHollow

It is suitable for many different sizes. Not sure about all sizes. But I think it should do an excellent job of removing the nest. Thanks for watching!

Thought this would be easy using my outside clean out as you. The brush head came right off the rod about 15 feet up. I have a pro coming to get the head out and sweep. Not impressed.

I would've grabbed a wire coat hanger and tape it to the top rod. You could fashion a few hooks really. Put it all the way up then pull the head down with the rod.

you need to be wearing a facemask and gloves when sweeping, that soot is dangerous and you are inhaling it,
