That is right. In Belgrade you landed at Nikola Tesla Airport. You know who Tesla was. In Bucharest you landed at Henri Coanda Airport. Coanda was Romanian and the father of the jet engine. We can fly from one continent to another and over seas and countries thanks to Coanda's invention. The Balkans, in general, are the hidden gem of Europe, with its specific rhythm of life, with a deep religious faith, a wonderful culture and surprising traditions, with places as if detached from heaven and with a diverse and rich gastronomy. The Balkans are cheerful, friendly and partying, they love music and dancing and they love life. Too few people really want to discover this corner of the world and look at it superficially or on the run, rushing to another part of the world.

You really praised Tesla,and that is really great. There is a story that someone once asked Einstein "What is it like being the smartest man alive" and he said "You'd have to go and ask Tesla" - i have my doubts whether this is true ,specifically because they were "enemies",Einstein was a physicist while Tesla was an engineer,and they shunned each others works. Mihaljo Pupin,Serbian physicist is also one of the greatest minds of Balkans,he invented loading coils 20 years after Graham Bell invented phone,and it made the long-distance phone calls possible,he also found that atoms struck by X-rays emit secondary X-ray radiation. He also invented a means for taking short-exposure X-ray photographs. He was the Co-Founder of NASA. And one of the physics departments in University of Columbia is named after Pupin - in one of the basements of it's hall was the first Nuclear reactor invented by Enrico Fermi,who was said to be the "architect of the nuclear age".

I love your enthusiasm about Tesla, and the Chess story of Bobby Fischer and Yugoslavia-- which brings to mind an amazing account of a true to life chess story by Michael Richards who played Kramer on "Seinfeld". A few years ago he was a guest on Seinfeld's other show called "Commedians in Cars Getting Coffee". Seinfeld chooses a specific car for each guest, picks them up to drive around, converse and get a coffee somewhere, and to talk some more.This is when Richards recounts his chess story. Try to catch this one if you can-- it is BRILLIANT! Michael Richards would do well in Serbia- he is an avid chess player.

Thanks very much indeed for the looking over of Saint Sava's Temple together with the fortress church in Belgrade. Was I only the only one to notice that Saint Sava's looks very much like Agia Sophia, the great imperial church of the Emperor Justinian in Constantinople (Istanbul)? I checked and found that to be true. After quite a bit of controversy the Serbian authorities did in fact determine that Saint Sava's would resemble Justinian's church. Splendid church!

It's not really that we wanted Communism but we accepted it and I believe because we had good relations to the west. So the "Bad" parts of communism were mostly not felt by the common citizen in Yugoslavia. We could travel freely and it wasn't closed society like USSR and other Eastern Block countries. We had access to many western goods. We also had Self Managing Market Socialism unlike USSR and Eastern Block Countries. One factor I think was also because before SFRJ parts of Yugoslavia were mostly rural and poor. During Tito the country was advancing faster than many western countries.

One thing that you probably didn't say in Tesla museum: after his death, ALL of his papers that were found were moved to some warehouse in New York. US navy team spent 2 full days there with microfilming gear recording around 130 crates worth of papers!

The gun to the head thing did happen here as well when they took rule over Serbia at the time . Many mourn Tito yet other mourn the Kingdom period of Serbia which ended when Tito took rule and changed it.My grandfather's villa was taken over by communists at the time he was taken to the woods and shot no grave or anything. Tesla never lived in Belgrade and Serbia, in fact he was only once there in 1-3 June 1892 at call of his big friend, a serbian physician, professor and rector at Belgrade University - Đorđe Stanojević (pronouncing George Stanoyevich). He was borned and lived in Vojna Krajina (military border lands) which than was Austro-Hungarian military province with some autonomous aspects. Later when it was abolished by Austro-Hungarians cause the threat from Ottoman empire stopped with their fall. So they attached that whole bordering area in 1881 to Croatia province even it was Serbian majority by 4 hundred years of its settlement.

Yugoslavia was not a member of the Warsaw Pact and was not occupied by USSR troops as was the rest of Eastern Europe. After the break with Stalin in 1948, Tito received economic aid from the United States. private property allowed the freedom of movement of Yugoslavs in non-communist Western European countries, something unimaginable in Romania since then. Many romanians at that time the Danube illegally to Yugoslavia crossing it on the way to Western Europe. The problem was that Tito was on very good terms with Ceausescu and did not want to upset him, so many times the romanians caught illegally in Yugoslavia were arrested and returned to communist Romania.This does not mean, however, that Tito was less criminal than Ceausescu and the other communist leaders in Eastern Europe. Stalin wanted to kill Tito so Goli Otok was for people who were for Stalin because anyone off them could kill Tito ...some 500 people died there..off some 15 000 that past there. Tito was probably most liberal off dictators in history but he was for sure not stupid ..so him self was off course most imporant..but he really cared about country and improving peoples lives..and he saw what was most dangerous was Yugoslavia and that was nationalism so it was like only thing that was baned in Yugoslavia during his life ...you will have hard time finding any older person that lived in Tito times in Yugoslavia that will say bad about him

Serbia existed long before Yugoslavia. Please don’t connect Serbia only with Tito and comunist, there is a lot more before it. You should google more info about Serbia: medival Serbian empire, Nemanjici dinasty (Sv Sava was one of them), WW1 ... Serbian nation is more than 10 centuries old. And there is no such thing like millitary church. Those churches are all in medival style. the only things you need to know about Tesla are, that he like many other inventors, I believe, did polyphasic sleep cycles which give you more time to be awake because you only sleep about 4 hours and then take 20min naps from time to time during the day. Next thing: he died poor in his NYC hotel room for which he couldn't afford to pay rent anymore because unlike Edison who didn't pay Tesla what he owed him, Tesla never patented or marketed his inventions well enough (or at all). He built that one tower that could have harvested power for an entire city for free which later was torn down.....also, guess who raided his hotel room right after his death with the FBI: Trump's "nuclear uncle" who later "invented" an x-ray machine that apparently helped reduce tumors ....and they claimed they didn't find anything interesting in his papers in the room although Tesla had stated that he was just about to finish the Death Ray....whether the Death Ray was some sort of x-ray, Laser or even a Sonic weapon as we now know exists, we'll never find out. But it was reason enough to help him die of a "natural cause"....

Yes! It's always nice for us to share our pre-conceived ideas of what a country is like before we explore it. Sometimes, it might make us look uninformed or naive, but in the end we know most people are just like us. There are like 200+ countries! Hard to know all of them, heck even hard to know most of them!

Who loved Tito and communism depends on who asked. People that got free apartments and good jobs by being a member of communist party will say that they loved that period, but people whose land or property was taken will not. Also, not many people were taking against communism because they were afraid. I heard stories from my grandparents that communist knew to send people to villages to collect signature for kings return and later went and rehabilitate (beat up) people who signed it.

Tito, even though more liberal than other communist dictators, was still one himself, and his authoritarianism, initially bloody and brutal only became flexible decades later, but enough to make later generations feel more positive about 70s and 80s. But his legacy did introduce Slobodan Milosevic and other communists who supported him during bloody 1990s, and ironically enough, his far right allies. The reason why Serbs today look back onto Tito's era is mere reaction to a literal right-wing sabotage of any post Milosevic reform, and nostalgia of youth and pre civil war in Yugoslavia period.

Nice video, For the fact checking, Nikola Tesla only spent 31 hours of his entire life in Serbia. He was born and bred in Croatia (Gospić, a very inspiring environment), studied in Zagreb, later on, he worked in Slovenia, Austria, Check Republic and Hungary before he moved across the Ocean to Americas. Truth be told, he was equally proud of his Serbian origin and Croatian background and of the whole Yugoslavia at that time. This was reflected in his statements and his letters. Cheers!

Actually Tito and the communists had a big enemy in "Četnik"s, a party that was for the king, led by Draža Mihajlović. And the communists won and they got to rule the country that way.

Well Tito wasnt that good too. Communists were killing and banishing everyone who didnt support him, thats why nobody today has nothing to say against him, because they were all killed. He also took a 20 billion $ loan that Serbia still has.

Nikola Tesla was romanian. Exact istro-Romanian . Tesla is NOT a serbian name. Tesla is a Wallachian and Romanian family name. Serbs names are with ić. So Tesla and Pupin and Njegoš are Wallachians and Romanians!
