In our darkest times (1980s), in Romania was no food in the stores, no gas for the pathetic cars we had, just few hours of power per day in our houses and apartments, two hours on the only TV channel we had and those were full of cult of personality dedicated to Ceausescu. You had no option to visit other countries being a Romanian, you were isolated in your own country. That was a nightmare and the definition of the purest communism. In those times, our friends from Yugoslavia had almost everything. Food, clothes, chocolate, Pepsi (oh my God!!), bananas, oranges and tons of other goodies. It was a miraculous convention signed between the Serbian and Romanian governs who allowed to the citizens who lived at 50 km from the borders to travel on the "other side" for 50 km few times a year. It was called the little traffic. When my parents asked me what I want for my birthday I simply tried impossible and I asked a vinyl disk of Iron Maiden or Metallica. The only person who could've accomplish the mission was my beloved grandmother who had her house near the Serbian border. She traveled on the other side, and entered in a music store, full of metal long-hair heads who stared at my granny with strange eyes. She asked the person on the counter for an Iron Maiden disk and she received a negative answer. Her words and her appearance had nothing to do together, she was just an old lady from a small village of Romania. A strange silence hit all the metal heads inside the store. Then, with half of the voice she asked about Metallica, and the guys went all crazy, laughing, throwing Serbian words and raising their eyebrows. My granny became their hero in just few seconds. Some of those guys went at their homes and brought a lot of vinyl disks. When my grandmother returned to Timisoara, she delivered the best heavy-metal collection I could ever imagine. I was in heaven!! Steven, this is a definition of the Serbians. They are naturally proud and stubborn people but when you got inside their soul, you'll discover the human nature at its best. Serbians are truly friends!! With a delay of 40 years, I will thank those guys from the bottom of my heart, here and now.

This is the most beautiful story that I've ever read on internet. Not just because I am a Serbian, not just because I am a metal fan. But because of your grandmother. And yes, we in Serbia know how Romanian people suffered under Ceausesku regime.Many people escaped to Serbia over Danube river. My father went to Romania once in 1988 to Arad and Temisoara and after he came back he told us how terrible it was. Dark everywhere ay night, no electricity, only 4 hours a day, no food, no gas...imagine Romania with many oil fileds has no gas. Terrible stories. And than Lepa Brena came to Romania. :D :D

We had some comments about how things were great under Ceausescu but the museum we visited really made it seem like things were much better under Tito. @@JetLagWarriors Unlike long communist countries,Yugoslavia was open, whoever did not interfere in politics lived normally.There were no major bans on art and travel.Tito was a great hedonist, he brought Hollywood stars of that time and they made Yugoslav films here.Of course, propaganda films were made, but the combination of Hollywood and communism is madness in itself.There is a documentary film: cinema komunisto "that describes the life of that time. My school friend was Romanian and still lives in Belgrade, but most of his family was in Romania.I remember that as children we made packages and helped not only that family but also their neighbors. It may seem to you that Serbs are reserved but they are not. We just don't laugh at everyone, there are no fake smiles and we are very direct.The biggest problem for us is how to be politically correct :P

When it comes to friends, I think most people would say one of four countries: Montenegro (same people, same language, same religion, a lot of intermarrying, never fought against each other and were often allies), Greece (same religion, fought together against the Turks, they don't recognize Kosovo, they were against the bombing of Serbia and a lot of Serbs go on vacation there), Russia (same religion, a fellow Slavic people group, they helped Serbia in many wars) or Romania (same religion, one of the few neighbours that they never fought against).

Canada had a central role in demolition of the building at 3:25. It has nothing with ex-yu war, only with NATO bombing Belgrade with radioactive bombs in 1999 without UN permission and against all international rules. So, that ruin is a memorial of your country's ex government actions. p.s. I had to comment, because sometimes observations, like that in the vid, can cause mis-washing of the history.

Other than that, if you like nature, you should also check Ada Ciganlija, Košutnjak forest and Topčiderski park. Finally, there is a small mountain near Belgrade (you have a city bus line to there but it would take you an hour) - the Avala mountain. It has a very nice hiking track (not very difficult) and nice monuments and views at the top.

historically, serbia was always a friend of Romania, in all wars. even when the americans ( nr 1 romanian ally) attacked yugoslavia, romania refused to help and even recognize the newly created states. Also, i think they smuggled fuel and food over the danube to help in the war ( or to survive). Some say that americans negociated with russians and had a plan named Yugoslavia plan (to cut the state) that was initially put for Romania but the popular revolution of 89 saved Romania and moved the plan to Yugoslavia. It was likely just a Serbian flag without coat of arms, the flag has colors reversed compared to the Russian one, they are similar but even the color tones are different. Either that or there was a Russian diplomat visiting that day. We don't fly other country's flags otherwise, not even Russian one :). Serbia as well as former Yugoslavia is in the crossroads of East and West, people have similar feelings 50/50... though since 90s most people don't look kindly towards West for all the things that have been done to us. Even so, it usually goes like this, the mind favors West while the heart favors East :).

Only place I've visited in Serbia is Nis. I remember the road to that town....We passed by a village and the image that got stuck in my head, is the smoke that went out the chimney of each house....it didn't go up, it wouldn't dissipate in the air....it would float around the houses, creating a very foggy and ghostly image of the village. I asked my dad about it and he said that the hills sorrounding the area creates a "pot" effect. Then we arrived to Nis and the first person I saw on the streets was an old man with a huge growth on his neck. The air in Nis was unbreathable, the lack of clean air gave me a headache. We would stay in our room with the windows closed. Parts of the town were nice, but other parts were in ruins. I've read a comment here about serbian men and indeed they look quite tall and strong....it must be from all that delicious food, cause I remember the meat and bread....was something like I've never tasted before.

You can buy it already pickled from local produce markets, but maybe later in the year, like nov-dec, and they are delicious indeed, but usually the best part is the green one u never eat in the summer time and u throw away the most riped part, that with the seeds, because its too mushy ;)

Great video. I keep searching for recent videos from Belgrade so I’m glad you published this. I’m thinking of spending a week in Serbia, as it’s one of the only countries in Europe that is cheap to get to and has few restrictions. From what I’ve gathered from my research, there’s really not that much to do in the city other than have a cultural experience for a couple of days. The food seems great - fresh and amazing, locally grown produce. I feel like a week would be overkill though?
@JetLagWarriors

Yeah, you might be right about a week being enough. We are trying to find a local guide who can help us out. Surely partying and chilling is great in Serbia, but that isn't really our style, so we are looking for help.

It probably wasn’t a Russian flag especially on a government building, our flag is reversed colors Russian flag so it’s easy to mix them up, but there’s a state flag with the crest and then there’s people’s flag which is without crest, just a reversed Russian flag (Slavic colours in fact).
