Khon Kaen is the centre of the universe! Lived and worked here in the city for 18 years and it's my favourite Thai city for sure.

I've lived In Khon Kaen 20 years, never felt 'scared' once ! Great city to retire in, plenty of things to do, but it's cold season now, so not too many people out and about, especially after dark.

Agreed. I've been here 3 months and have never felt unsafe. And, there are plenty of options for dining at night.

@@AnixCyam My Experience was completely different and I was almost attracted by a guy near my hotel around noon time.

@ Sorry this happened. I actually into quite some detail on my video about my first 3 months here, but to sum it up, Thailand's violent crime rate is 2.4 out of 100,000, which is well below the global average of 5.9. Don't let a negative experience colour your view of Khon Kaen. I'm from the US, and I would rather walk around any large THai city than ANY US city---or many smaller US towns for that matter. LOL

@ Totally agree. I have been travelling in south east Asia and Thailand for past 2.5 years. Thailand generally is very safe and peaceful but incidents can happen.

There's a Saturday Evening market within walking distance from the hotel you're staying in. And, a green Son Teaw that runs north and south of the road to the left of your hotel by 2 blocks. It's not super central, but the location is walkable. A nice area of town in my opinion. SOme really cool cafes and hangouts if you're willing to hunt and peck for them there. Khon Kaen is really cool.

I spend 2 days there and everywhere was closed by 5 pm.

@I believe you were staying. at La Cassia hotel. If you hang a left at the hotel's entrance, just two blocks on the same street is a roof top bar called the Harmonic Cafe which stays open past midnight. Sorry you didn't enjoy your time.
