Just to clarify something Yeonju said. She reached out to me and said she meant to say that the villas/apartments is where many Korean people used to live. Nowadays they live in apartments (like the one's I showed while walking with the architect). Some renovate the brick buildings, changing the inside while keeping the outside. I would have really liked to show the insides of the new apartments, but in the short time I had I couldn't find anyone who was able to show me inside.

(my english is not so good)Actually, the bricks ones are all concrete-structure buildings. Only exterior is made of bricks. They usually were been building during 90s, when labor costs were so cheap that people could hire brick experts to finish exterior. Nowadays labor costs have been arisen so Korean people usually finish those "villa" exterior with exposed concrete or else.

Hi Mangi, it's because that's where I'm coming from, Canada and Japan. It's my only frame of reference. A good chunk of people watching will be from the US and many watch because they've seen me talk about life in Japan and compare it to Western countries. For you talking about Canada, I think almost every Canadian would agree with what you said. Our movies aren't as popular, our economy is smaller. Never lived in Toronto nor visited New York, so can't speak to that comparison. When you talk to your family and friends about your life in the UK, do you never tell them about how things are different there than in Korea?

I lived in and about Seoul in 1962-3, compliments of the U.S. Army. It was a fantastic experience. Much has changed in the time from then until now. The tallest building in Seoul at that time was to be six floor tall. It was being built using wooden scaffolding. Old Korea was everywhere. The people of Korea are most friendly and gracious. On street vendors were plentiful and the food was very good and spicy.

First I would not rate on a single scale, since there is so many different aspects of both countries that I like a lot and other things less. I like both countries, lots of things that I love but they are not perfect, no country in the world are. I have only spent 5 days in Korea so I can not give any big thoughts of that, just first time impressions and since I spend most of my time in japan I tend to compare things. With Japan, things that I love is sento (public baths), onsen (hot spring), home cooked Japanese food, the beautiful nature, the overall kindness of the people, feeling safe anywhere and the old culture. Things I don't like is the bureaucracy, smoking inside restaurants and cafes, how the banks havn't modernize enough to make transaction/paying bills and such online easier and "modern", the over packing on food items.

The average height of Korean male is about 174~174.5cm and that of Japanese male is about 170~171cm. I know that there are some height-boosting insoles but it's rather like exaggeration. Some would use that, but not in general. Actually, it feels like Japanese male have comparatively similar heights each other while Korean male have more gaps each other. not sure why people consider Seoul. the airfare to Korea is expensive. what you want to do is go to Thailand or Vietnam or Japan. look for real Asian food and real Asian culture. Korea is nice but you want to have the best experience.
@marie01ism5 жыл бұрын
Mario it depends where your from. For me, airfare to Korea is waaay cheaper than Japan. Korea also has a very rich culture, you just have to do your research on where to visit.. but Japan is still the best for me even though everything is super expensive, you never get bored once you’re there

When I was in 6th grade I told my L.A and SS teacher that I was interested in Korean culture. He ended up telling me he lived in Korea for a year with his wife and that he taught English there. He was super nice and even offered to give me the phone number to the school he worked with just in case I wanted to teach there for a bit too. I miss him a lot, he was a cool dude.

I can't believe prople are saying Seoul and Tokyo are like twins. Very different. And after Seoul, it is striking how far behind Tokyo is technologically. You don't notice it if you go to Japan directly from the west, but it is very apparent after Korea. Japan has been making efforts to catch up though.

What a idiot..... Seoul is a city with much better technology than Tokyo.
@orangeclover214 жыл бұрын
Japan reached the tech era first, so it might APPEAR that Japan is behind (they might be equal now, who knows). Korea, in the large scheme of things, only recently caught up. Japan is also a bit less entranced with the future now compared to in the past. Whereas in Korea, big companies and pop culture are sinking their teeth into anything with screens and tech - just like they can be with their looks. The newest country to catch up always looks like they are technically superior. You can't just UNDO what's already up. That's why everywhere looks better than the U.S. and England now.

Ah... linking arms and hand-holding isn't considered PDA because you do it with literally everyone; your school mates, friends, family, lover. I've had people I met for the first time link arms with me and it was strange at first, but when you are mutual friends/family with someone else, I think the closeness is assumed. It's like you learn to do it as children in school and you never grow out of it like you do in the west. It never becomes inappropriate or a meaning for deeper feelings. It is a casual display of friendship. (Have you seen the pictures of Kim Jong Un and the South Korean President linking arms/holding hands?) Also, you don't want to get separated from your group in those crowded areas. You won't see much kissing or hugging because those are seen as intimate PDA. I have seen minor PDA in HongDae because it is a younger crowd with lots of foreigners and the University is nearby.
@musafawundu67185 жыл бұрын
Affection does not mean amorous affection. People who link hands obviously like one another and one another's company...

I guess it's fair to say Seoul is more sprawling, more car oriented, with wider streets and overall vastly bigger spaces. Whether this is better or not, is up to you. I tend to prefer "human scale" environments, so Tokyo wins hands down. Ultra compact, not so much space for cars.

To me, some places in Tokyo felt like it was trapped in a time capsule, which is kinda cool. Beautiful details in architecture and organized (almost too restrictive and organized for my taste). However, Seoul was felt a little more carefree, energetic and vibrant. Itaewon, Hongdae and Gangnam were incredible. Koreans, to me, felt a bit more open, outgoing and friendly. Interestingly, I went to a bar in Itaewon (Glam?) and noticed that guys and girls were really TALL. Probably the tallest in Asia...this next gen seems to be growing with the adoption of a westernized diet and more protein. Technology wise, I think Japan was ahead previously but Korea seems to have caught up and maybe even passed in some respects. Anyways, both amazing countries but quite different..

They're corporate apartments, rented out on a 1-2year contract. It's why they were numbered. I lived in Busan for a while and saw Samsung, Hyundai, Daewoo and other major corporation logos on such apartment complexes. The system works a bit differently with a high security deposit and low rent. The security deposit is then used by these corporations to invest in either more real estate or other ventures. Oh, don't worry, once the contract ends, you will get that deposit back. It's quite an interesting system and it means some places like the luxurious glass towers of Haeundae can have rents of 4-500k won a month. That's 4-500$ for an apt with a stunning view of the sea. If you ever travel to Korea again, i do recommend you take a Peach airline flight from Narita to Fukuoka, go about that city and then hop on a ferry to Busan, it's more fun that way. Plus if you get lucky, you might see a whale on the Tsushima strait.
@Kindapple6 жыл бұрын
idk which apartment u are referring to but not all of them are living under 1-2 year contract and contracts are with apt owner not with corporate. its just one of the unique way to afford real estate in Korea. and there is no such luxurious apartments in Haeundae that you can live with 4-500k won a month. the average monthly pay in that area is like 2-3k US dollar per month with security deposit of 20k-50k. the cheapest monthly payment I found was in Doosan We've the Zenith' that is monthly pay of 600$ with deposit of 350k US dollar.
@Lonaticus6 жыл бұрын
The jeonse system varies from place to place, yeah. Well.. the person i went to see must've paid a massive upfront deposit too then, but i don't think he lied when he told me his monthly rent is 400$. Oh well..

I don't know what you mean by "corporate apartments" Most apartments in Korea are owned by individuals, or rented from individual owners. They're constructed by major companies like Hyundai, Samsung, Hanshin, etc., but those corporations are the builders/developers, not the owners.
@InkwonChung5 жыл бұрын
Hey man, those "public" houses you saw by the river are actually quite expensive and one of the first luxury apartments developed in Korea during the 70s and 80s. Many of the people who live there are pretty wealthy and have completely redeveloped their interiors to modern style. Most of the old apartments built in the 60s-80s get "redeveloped" after 30 to 40 years of existence into luxurious apartment complexes
