People have mentioned Mark Jansen (guitar and harsh vocals) who was the founder of Epica. He was also a founding member of After Forever which was Floor’s first band, so the connections go far back, and there is a lot of interweaving across the Dutch metal scene. This collaborative and supportive spirit is one of the things I really like about European metal (if one discounts Norwegian death metal bands murdering rivals!)

Yeah, it is all intertwined. Epica named after the Album of the band Kamelot. Simone later marrying someone from Kamelot, Kamelot touring with Nightwish. Floor and Mark from the same town in the same band when they were young. Marko Hietala (NightWish) guest starring in Revamp (Floor Jansens band before Nightwish), and then Anneke van Giersbergen (the Gathering) being the mother of all Dutch metal ladies. Anneke now touring with Floor's solo tour. Not to mention the Ayreon projects (Arjen Lucassen) bringing all of them and many more together, including Joost van de Broek, the keyboard player of After Forever (together with Floor and Mark), who is now producing for Epica and BlackBriar. Floor being married to the drummer of Sabaton, Elise Ryd (Amarante) and Alissa White-Glutz (Arch Enemy) joining in with Kamelot on a tour...just because they can. ....so many connections....

EPICA are Dutch symphonic metal, formed in 2002 by guitarist Mark Jansen , after parting ways with his former band After Forever, which was Floor's first band she joined at age 16(Mark and Floor are not related). Formed as Sahara Dust, they renamed the band after the 2003 Kamelot album. Lead singer is Simone Simons, 17 in 2002. She was training for pop singing, but switched to this style when she heard Tarja with Nightwish. Keyboardist Coen (rhythms with moon) Janssen is the other original member left today. The rest of the current lineup ( constant since 2012) includes Isaac Delahaye on lead guitar, Rob van der Loo on bass, and drummer Arien van Weesenbeek. Generally heavier than Nightwish, this song is not typical of most of their catalog as Mark adds some harsh vocals in a lot of songs. This performance was EPICA's Retrospect 10th anniversary show in 2013. A 3 hour ,24 song concert, and Simone was about 3 months pregnant here. This song was over 2 hours into the show. The full orchestra and choir were special for this show. though they have 4 shows this year, with orchestra and choir, scheduled. 8 albums and several EP's to date, album #9 is in progress. Song is from the 3rd album. 2007's The Divine Conspiracy, lyrics by Simone, music by Mark ,Simone ,and former guitarist Ad Sluijter. Awesome live, as you see. As much as I love Nightwish, Epica is the best symphonic metal band. They go so hard, but also have some tremendous ballads. This song is not typical of Epica either since Mark doesn't do his harsh vocals here. As others have recommended, I would either do Consign to Oblivion live next, or my personal favorite Design your Universe from this concert (Retrospect)

Epica is the perfect balance between beauty and power in Metal and they have the chops to play live alongside an orchestra without missing a step. The keyboardist is Coen Jansen who also arranges the orchestral parts and is a brilliant character who is never happy being ‘the guy in the back’ he is always worth keeping an eye on live.

Great reaction. Epica is with Nightwish on my favorite bands list. Epica is heavy metal and heavier than Nightwish. This was a unique concert with live orchestra and choir for Epica’s 10th anniversary about 11 years ago. Floor was a guest for 2 songs. She is a friend of Simone Simons, the singer from Epica. One of the guitarist’s and the composer of most of their songs also growls for many songs. Great live band with lots of video’s to react to. They are doing a live concert with live orchestra and choir this year. 2 shows in the Netherlands and 2 in Mexico. Go to see both shows next week 19 and 20 september in the Netherlands. Nice reaction guys. It was great to hear that it reminded you of Tristania! I love that band and they do have a lot more in common. Most Epica songs do include growls and a lot of choirs, although Epica's sound is more symphonic and even progressive, not as gothic and doomy like Tristania. There's a lot of "Tristaniaesque" songs that maybe you should check out next, like The Skeleton Key or the big epic ones like Design Your Universe from this same concert or Kingdom of Heaven pt3

Epica puts the Symphony in Symphonic Metal. iirc this was their 10th anniversary concert (aka Retrospeckt) so they splurged on the strings and backing choirs. btw, Simone Simons (singer for Epica) was about 4-5 months pregnant at this time of this concert... lucky kid had a front row seat. Other the last year or so, I've listened to a lot more Epica and find they fit my musical tastes even a bit more than NW.... that's just my personal tastes, and still enjoy NW any time I hear them. Epica's musical complexity and enthusiasm on stage is what gets to me, AND they are still touring in mainstream rotation while NW has taken a hiatus from the road (also, I'm not a fan of the mixing of NW's most recent album). The former-engineer in me really enjoys the technical complexity of the typical Epica tune.

This was a 3 hour show for their 10th anniversary with full orchestra and choir. Simone Simons is the vocalist, a classically trained soprano. Try Chasing the Dragon from the same Retrospect show to hear Simone go through her full repertoire, plus it will introduce you to Mark Jansens harsh vocals. Oh, and Epica can get MUCH heavier than this. It what makes then stand out from the rest for me. Try The Essence of Silence official live if you want to hear how heavy they can get.

I love metal with orchestra of any kind, the best example is the original s&m concert from Metallica. I'm hoping to see my reaction request sometime in the future, it's been a little while since I put it in and I apologize for Rebel not being able to be played. Also be sure to find the video of Asami and Miyako on asami's birthday playing rising with just a piano and a microphone. Truly one of a Siamese best performances and it shows her r&b background very well Unfortunately I have not had surgery yet because the right knee has to be replaced completely. In the meantime I have to work through the pain with my full-time job as well as a back issue which also is very painful

If you love orchestra & metal you'll love Epica. I'd also recommend Within Temptation (Dutch) & Lacuna Coil (Italian) symphonic metal bands, and Nightwish of course. Good luck with your knees and back. After 6 knee ops I recently had both partially replaced, and they're better than they have been for 20 years (even the ops weren't too bad !)

Epica has always had its feet firmly planted in metal and ends up being the heaviest band of the rest, largely thanks to their excellent drummer, Arien, who brought his own style, flirting with elements of death and even symphonic black metal in several songs, especially in their last three albums. And they sound even better live. They really are an impressive band. I highly recommend Kingdom of Heaven part 3 from Omega Alive. It’s a masterpiece of genre

Floor Jansen and Mark Jansen (no family relation) were co-members in their first band “After Forever” 2. Mark Jansen left “After Forever” and founded “Sahara Dust” and asked, then 17 years old girlfriend, Simone Simons to be the front woman and lead singer of the band 3. Simone Simons became interested in Symphonic Metal and Classical style singing after listening to Nightwish’s Oceanborn. 4. Mark Jansen changed the name of his band “Sahara Dust” to “Epica” that is the name of one of “Kamelot”’s album, a band they were touring with. 5. Simone Simons is the long-time partner of the Kamelot’s keyboard player: Oliver Palotal - they have a son together 7. Always bet on the Red AND the Black - Simone and Floor - you can't lose!!!! Vibeke Steine was the loveliest singer in Tristania- still love their work! (Showing my age?) The drummer in Epica is Arien van Weesenbeek - hitting things since he was 3 years old according to his parents, lucky he found his Dad's drum-kit before he wrecked the furniture!!!. Coen on keyboards is a real character too! (Shaved his head since then!) No more "Tuomas" look-alike! That shout at the end "FLOOR JANSEEEEEEN" was from Mark Jansen - no relation to Floor other than being in After Forever with her way back when.....! He does do Tristania-like growls in other Epica songs - e.g. "Chasing the Dragon" (my fave)!

They do 2 songs at that concert also Epica is "Epic" here's a song with an epic Guitar and Keytar duet and just to be epic circus solei members hanging from the balconies not to mention playing a burning piano the keyboardist plays 3 types of pianos and Mark and Issaac Delahaye both can growl. I think that's probably the thing for me too. Simone is a fantastic singer and I do like this song, but something about Epica's music just doesn't gel with me, and I think it's that. I just don't like this whole "growling" thing in music. Every now and then it's fine, but if it's a major thing in the music then it puts me off. I'll have to have a look at some of their less growly stuff though!

Great reaction, thank you. Two metal queens together on stage - and longtime good friends. Epica is - like Nightwish - a Symphonic metal band but normally heavier as NW. The male singer growls, Simone does the clear singing. I also like Epica but prefer Nightwish because I don't like this much growling you find in Epica. By the way, Floor is 1,83 m high (without her high heels); her sister Irene who also is a great singer is even a little bit taller.
