Sabbath had many singers during their career, just for the record Sabbath = Tony Iommi. • Ozzy • Dave Walker (Joined for some weeks in 1978, but (thank god) Ozzy returned) • Dio (He recorded 3 amazing albums with the band: HAH (1980), Mob Rules (1981) and Dehumanizer (1992) • Ian Gillan ( He just recorded one album called Born Again, amazing album released in 83) • Dave Donato (Stayed few months during 1984) • Glenn Hughes (He recoded a Tony Iommi solo album, but days before the release, the album was turned into a Black Sabbath album, wich is "Seventh Star" in 1986) • Ray Gillen (Fabulous singer, sadly didn't stay too long, he joined after the fifth concert of the Seventh Star tour in 1986, he recorded an album called "The Eternal Idol" in 87, but left the band before the release, with led the band to find another person to rerecord the vocals and release the album) • Tony Martin (The most underrated era of Sabbath, he joined the band in 87, rerecorded all the vocals for "The Eternal Idol" and stayed till 1987-1991 then 1994-1996, recorded INCREDIBLE albums: Eternal Idol, Headless Cross (1989), Tyr (1990), Cross Purposes (1994) and for most people the worst Sabbath album (I love it) Forbidden in 1995) Also Judas Priest singer Rob Halford sang for the band live in some ocassions: 1992 when Dio left the band due to Sabbath opening for Ozzy, and in 2004 when Ozzy was sick.

There are some versions of The Eternal Idol songs (maybe the whole album?) with Ray Gillen floating around out there (or probably, here). Tony Martin was great, though! Headless Cross is a classic in my book, and despite how half-assed 'Idol' sounded, I kinda love it.

This is easily Black Sabbath's best album, and probably the best Heavy Metal album, bar none. Check out the other tracks, they're all bangers -- especially 'Lonely is the Word', which boasts one of Tony Iommi's best ever guitar solos, imho.

This is literally Dio, with a few former members of Black Sabbath, it's totally different, Black Sabbath is Ozzy, Bill, Geezer and Tony, 4 lads from Birmingham England 1968-1978, Anything else besides those 4 is not Black Sabbath, And for you to think this is better than, Black Sabbath, Paranoid, Master Of Reality, Vol 4, Sabbath Bloody Sabbath, Sabotage, It literally hilarious, it really is funny, But yeah anyway, They really should of changed the name of the band once Ozzy was no longer in the band, Dio is literally a top 5 vocalist of all time, But he is not Black Sabbath, Yeah, Ozzy doesn't have the best vocals, But he has a very unique and haunting voice, which is perfect for Black Sabbath, Ozzy is and always will be the one and only voice of Black Sabbath.

It's such a challenge to let go of something that's so comforting and comfortable for you. You want to be open to the change, but you have no idea how it's going to turn out, so there's caution as well. Then the song begins and you start getting pulled into it and not know where you're going. Then a breakdown happens, and this is why it can be so emotionally purging. It's so cool because hearing a song like this just changes us, especially if we open up to it. Thank you for your sensitive reaction. Much respect. 🙏🌺

I dont think they even intended calling it Black Sabbath in the beginning but that it was the recordlabel that wanted, it makes quite a difference to have a known "brand" to sell rather than something new so its understandable. I think the Tony Martin era is reallt great as well, way less known and very underrated.

My personal favourite post-Osbourne era album by Sabbath is album from 1986 that called 'Seventh Star' with Glenn Hughes on vocals. My favourite Sabbath album with Ozzy is, maybe, 'Technical Ecstasy' from 1976. Among albums with Dio I love much more album from 1992 'Dehumanizer', and also highly reccomend you their great album from 2009 that called 'The Devil You Know'.

I'd recommend the band Heaven And Hell, which is this line up but without the Black Sabbath name (legal issues). Their only album is "The Devil You Know" and was recorded about a year before Dio died. It is a stellar piece of work. Check out the song "Bible Black", and you won't believe it's the work of a 69yo man dying of stomach cancer.

The vocalist is the bridge between the audience and the music, it's what draws us in. So it's understandable that we grow attached to one particular singer. But the change happens for a reason, it's not just random. It's because the previous incarnation of the band has run its course and become dysfunctional, and that's certainly what happened here. But not to worry, we ended up with the best of both worlds, because in 1980 Dio joined Sabbath while Ozzy went solo with Randy Rhoads on guitar. And both groups were amazing. I wouldn't trade that for a continuation of Ozzy Sabbath, which there was zero chance of anyway. And by the way, the rot also set in with Di'anno and Maiden. Some people think that if Paul had stayed, they would have continued to produce classics year in year out and been even more successful than they were with Bruce, but that's simply delusion. Paul wanted out and the band wanted him gone, so there's no version of reality where he would have stayed and made it a success. Bruce was the best thing that ever happened to them.

By 1979, the original Black Sabbath w/ Ozzy Osbourne was not working in the studio creatively... the band was burnt out by drugs, alcohol and a decade of touring. The last album 'Never say die!' was a commercial failure in 1978 and Sabbath found themselves upstaged on tour every night by a young Van Halen opening for them. Black Sabbath had a working pattern: Tony Iommi (guitar) came up w/ the riffs... Geezer Butler (bass) and Bill Ward (drums) would jam on the riff and a song would come about... Ozzy would hear the music and come up w/ vocal melodies for the song, and Geezer would write lyrics to Ozzy's vocal melodies... Sabbath started as a dark, doom-sounding heavy rock band and that established their sound and career in the early 1970's. But by 1976, Iommi and Butler wanted the band to have a modern approach on the album 'Technical ecstasy'... Ozzy hated the record and ended up leaving Sabbath briefly after the tour... the album failed to sell gold. Iommi recalled that the band made a mistake trying to adapt to the musical trends that were heading towards disco and punk rock... Ozzy came back for the 'Never say die!' album in '78 and it was another commercial failure. Ozzy recalled it was a bad album by any critique The thing w/ Ozzy is that if he finds a track boring to him, he won't sing on it... Bill Ward had to record vocals to a few songs by the end of Ozzy's years in Sabbath... In 1979, the band worked for weeks and had no songs finished... Tony Iommi was frustrated w/ Ozzy's input and unwillingness to engage creatively w/ his music... Ozzy was frustrated that the band hated everything he sang on. Finally, Tony Iommi met vocalist Ronnie James Dio at an L.A. bar and they decided to try work together... Iommi played him a song and Dio immediately had a melody and lyrics for it - 'Children of the Sea'. Iommi told Bill Ward that Ozzy was fired from Black Sabbath and Ronnie James Dio was coming in to work on new music for Black Sabbath... Geezer Butler was so upset that he quit the band briefly and Bill Ward was no longer interested either... Geezer came back to the band and was relieved that he did not have to write lyrics for the band anymore - Dio was an accomplished lyricist. Bill Ward agreed to play drums on the album, but he left as the 'new' Black Sabbath started touring in 1980... Vinny Appice (drums) joined Sabbath on tour and did the next album 'Mob rules' in 1981. Ronnie James Dio wanted Black Sabbath to be that dark, heavy band again that shocked the world in 1970... so, his first Sabbath album 'Heaven and Hell' was a return to the heaviness and riffs of early Sabbath, but w/ Dio on vocals... It worked and Black Sabbath had their first platinum selling record since 1973, but it sounded so different from the original Black Sabbath. After Ronnie James Dio left Sabbath in 1982, it seemed like a good idea to hire Deep Purple vocalist Ian Gillan to replace Dio in Sabbath in 1983... It didn't work beyond the 1 album and tour... 'Born again' was the album w/ Gillan and the mixes were messed up so the audio was rather muffled to Sabbath's dismay... On tour, Ian Gillan needed a lyric book onstage to sing Ozzy's Sabbath songs because he couldn't connect w/ them lyrically. Ozzy Osbourne was depressed for months after he was fired from Black Sabbath... but Sharon Arden (who became his wife) was able to arrange a new band and launch Ozzy's solo career in 1980... Randy Rhoads (guitar) was his first guitarist and the music that Ozzy heard from Randy was exciting and new... The guitarist taught guitar and had patience while working, so he would play Ozzy his ideas and if Ozzy was impressed, he would engage creatively and come up w/ vocal melodies and ideas for songs... Bob Daisley (bass) was tasked initially w/ writing lyrics. That was how 2 albums - 'Blizzard of Ozz' and 'Diary of a Madman' were written and recorded in 1980. It turned out that Ozzy's concentration disorder was a blessing in a way because if a song was not exceptionally good musically, Ozzy would get bored and dismiss it.. Ozzy's solo records were faster and more appealing than Sabbath's classic music and he quickly sold more copies than Black Sabbath in the 80's.

It's interesting that you got off on the ending. You know what instrument that is, don't you? It's a lute, a medieval version of a guitar. A truly original way to finish off a heavy rock track. kzbin.info/www/bejne/m3jVhn2sjL6Fb5I About the only other rock band to ever use a lute in their music that I know of are Steeleye Span, but that's only because they're a folk rock group.
