KISS came out during the era of what was called "Shock Rock" or "Glam Rock." Artists like David Bowie during his Ziggy Stardust era and Alice Cooper. They have always said that they wanted to be the group they never saw growing up. Their shows had a lot of fireworks, smoke bombs and flashes. Each member created their own on stage personality and make up. Gene Simmons liked those old Horror and Monster movie classics from Universal. Like Godzilla, Dracula, etc. So he created "The Demon" persona. Paul Stanley loved those ol' Motown groups and thought of himself as a Lover. So he created "The Starchild" persona. Peter Criss had been through some tough and dangerous times as a kid growing up. He thought he had 9 lives like a cat. So he created "The Catman" persona. Ace Frehley was into outer space and astronomy, so he created "The Spaceman of Space Ace" persona. A lot of their music from 1974 to 1978 is some of their best music. Detroit Rock City, Shout It Out Loud, Rock n' Roll All Nite, Love Gun, God Of Thunder, Deuce, Cold Gin, Shock Me, Beth, Hard Luck Woman, Baby Driver, Strutter, Firehouse, are just a few of the songs they were known for back then. In the 80's they switched to the L.A. hair metal sound like everyone else. Here is some interesting trivia for you. This song come about out of a bet. The producer of the album made a bet with Paul Stanley that he couldn't write a Disco song, so he did. I remember that era well and the "album burning" stunts a lot of Churches had in their parking lots back then. KISS, Ozzy Osbourne, Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, anything that was hard rock or metal. They had people show up with their kids albums and burn them right there in the parking lot. It was crazy. As if burning an album would get rid of hard rock or metal music. But yeah this was a great reaction. You might look into some of their other songs. They were a fun group and like you said this was about stage personas that got people's attention.

Ah yes, KISS in the disco era. Cheesy, but fun. It's a massive rabbit hole, let's go! I grew up on KISS, was 6 when this song was released. Rock and Roll All Night is probably their most famous. I have heard it at numerous sporting events over the years. Same with Detroit Rock City.

Unfortunately, most women hate regular Kiss songs. It’s great for those of us that lived through it and loved the metal roots but for some reason chicks just don’t get it…besides maybe the hair metal phase in the 80’s but the rest of us hate that so hard to find agreement on “the best” Kiss. She’ll hate real Kiss I think 🤷♂️ Kiss Alive and Kiss Alive II are classics

Kiss is better than their reputation. I am sure 80% of the people who don't like Kiss don't know much about them. The album 'Destroyer' is iconic to me, 'Detroit Rock City' or 'God of Thunder' are my favorite songs on that. Then 'Creatures of the Night' and 'Domino' are insanely good but less known. Other great choices for a listen: 'Cold Gin', 'She', 'Black Diamond'. Sweetest love song is 'Beth' for sure.

Saw them twice in the mid-70s. Very professional. They are strictly business, there to put on a good show. Like Barnum & Bailey's circus, the show must go on. Both Simmons and Stanley had a strict no-drugs/no-booze policy. They merchandised the bee-jeezus out of their image and brand. They were businessmen first, musicians second.

Rock and Roll all Nite ; is their most popular. You absolutely nailed the just of who and what they are. Are they top notch musicians, no...but can hold their own. What they did have was a gimmick and Geme Simmons as marketing genius. Before you hop into the rabbit hole, check into the KISS brand and logo, they've dabbled in everything and made money from everything. Seen them live numerous times, forget the notion of evil, there religious and patriotic, and their shows are 2nd to none. They had pyrotechnics and theatrics long before anyone, they started pushing a outstanding live show. What to listen to....3 more songs kind of show who they are and their range. Rock and Roll All Night I'm guessing you've heard before, then there's Detroit Rock.City and then the ballad that the drummer wrote...Beth. Enjoy.

This was my first favorite song from KISS and I think I was 10 or 11 at the time. KISS was known for their makeup more than their music. Of course every band has their fans but the paint eventually became more of a gimmick because nobody ever knew what they looked like. Even on interviews they would wear their trademark makeup, that is until 1983, when they decided to release their 11th album and feature the band on the cover without the paint for the first time in their history. They are really an awesome band and I'm glad you've taken the step to explore their music. I would love to see you react to more. The 70s and 80s got a bad rap for the music that evolved into those eras. "Devil music" was the accusation but believe me when I tell you it's much like when you questioned the stag head on fire at the Wacken Music Festival during Ghost Love Score. You said the bull is representative of evil or associated with satanism in many cultures? Evil and Satanism was the last thing on their mind when they came up with the name KISS or any bands in the 70s and 80s for that matter. The bands were great and the music was just as good. Simple, very forward lyrics, talented musicians, and the message was very easy to get. This is why I love the 80s and as corny as it sounds, many people used songs to express their love to their potential partner as 80s ballads were a good way to express your feelings back then because, let's face it, some of those lyrics sound like they came right out of a poetry book. This one in particular os a bit strong as you mentioned, lol but you get my point. I'm here for more KISS reactions! See you soon. ❤️

Hi Rosalie I was KISS fan in the early 80’s when in my country was forbidden” the Government called them fascist “ Was the chance for the Communism put the youth away from them and they succeeded. So I had to secretly listen to them and was amazing because I grabbed the best transition from them in the music history ( disco-pop, pop-rock, rock-classic rock, orchestral- rock, Heavy Metal) Did I missed something? From 1979-1983 they struggled to find a path to continue when many others were giving up. In those years Australia 🇦🇺 and Europe were the places where their new music grabbed fans. I recommend it to you the album “ Music from the Elder “ 1981 I think you are going to love it 😍.

Back in the good old days of music. You had to have a different sound to get on a lablle. Looks came in second. Alice Cooper came in with, not only the sound but the looks and the show ( his show was a very dark theam ). Hopefully you will get to him. Then Kiss came in. The make up and coustomes were wild. Instant hit. They followed suit with a wild show. Explosion and fire and blood. Drove audiences wild. In the late 70's/ early 80's. There were movements to lable everything as evil. Someone came up with thee acronym of Knights in Satins Service. Like Ozzy biting a bats head off or Zappa eating crap. You went with the free publicity. Hopefully you'll get to Frank Zappa as well.

Okay, Rosalie, I've got a lot of input here... KISS was my first concert, way back in 1983. They were huge with us kids in the 70's, not so much because of their music, which was decent with some genius (Beth comes to mind), but because of the spectacular showmanship and the innuendo surrounding everything about the band. And nearly EVERYTHING, as you noted, was about six. Paul Stanley kept up a banter with the crowd that was usually x-rated. Years later I met Gene and Paul when I was at my first radio job in Sacramento. They came by to promote their new album, Hot in the Shade, and afterwards we gave them the opportunity too sneak out the back, because the front parking lot was filled with hundreds of fans. They refused, saying that without the fans, they were nothing. They marched out the front door, and proceeded to spend the next two hours signing autographs and posing for pictures. It really impressed me, and despite all the controversy, I think they deserved their fame. They certainly worked hard for it.
