This song was a bit of an experiment for KISS. It was written with a disco beat in mind. It’s unique in the KISS catalog.

Disco was so big that all other bands were trying to capture a part of that audience by doing a disco type song or two. But it's true most of the 70s rock bands did not like disco.

KISS was made to be seen live on stage. The best performance ever of any band and I have went to allot of concerts. KISS on the radio? Sounds good. KISS live? Busting out the cough drops screaming! In the mid-late 70s KISS had a televised concert in prime time. Those special time slots were usually reserved for things like Muhamad Ali, Evel Knievel and of course The World Series and The Super Bowl. There were only 3 TV stations at that time so very few bands were big enough to get that privilege. Elton John was another that I remember. Gene Simmons spitting blood and Ace Frehley shooting flames from his guitar on prime time television had parents absolutely rattled haha. Great times!

"I was made for lovin' you" was a huge international hit by Kiss in 1979, but it came at a cost... In the 70's, Kiss had established themselves as a hard rock outfit w/ an explosive stage show... They were known for their rock anthems like - 'Rock and roll all nite'... 'Love gun' ... 'Detroit rock city' ... 'Shout it out loud'... etc. 🔥🔥🤘🤘But Kiss also had an unexpected major pop hit in 1976 - the ballad 'Beth'... sung by drummer Peter Criss... Kiss had been signed by disco label Casablanca Records, and disco became huge by 1977/ '78... For some reason, Kiss decided to go for a disco record, hoping for another big pop hit; that became the 'Dynasty' album in '79... "I was made for lovin' you" made Kiss an international phenomenon from America to Australia. However, it marked the end of the original Kiss. The problem was that Kiss was marketed w/ so much merchandise that they were perceived as a kid's band by 1979, and making a disco record alienated their hard rock fanbase... When they toured America in '79, they discovered that their shows weren't selling out any more and kids were there w/ their parents to see Kiss in concert. The other problem was that Peter Criss (drums) was struggling w/ a drug problem and the band realized his skills on the drums were suffering... Criss did not even play on most of the 'Dynasty' album (Session drummer Anton Fig played on the tracks) ... Making matters worse, Peter Criss could not perform optimally on tour in '79. It got so bad that the next Kiss album 'Unmasked' (1980) did not have Criss on it (Anton Fig played all the drums), even though his face was on the album cover. According to the band, they made the decision in early 1980 to let Peter Criss go... and Eric Carr (drums) joined Kiss w/ a new makeup character. But a 2nd disco album failed commercially... and the makeup era of Kiss was over by 1983 because nobody wanted to see the band w/ only 2 original members (lead guitarist Ace Frehley quit in 1982). Thankfully, Kiss returned in 1983 without the makeup and saw their career surge again in the 80's.

@Marco-vw3mv
@Marco-vw3mv Жыл бұрын
@@Deadpool-px2nm I know the question wasn't directed at me, but you can check out "I love it Loud" as an example of a "harder" song. This isn't Metallica level, but was probably close to considered "metal" at the time (although, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, and Black Sabbath were around at this time). "Detroit Rock City" and "I wanna Rock and Roll all Night" are probably the quintessential Kiss songs. Also "Beth" is another interesting song for them (sung by Peter Criss the drummer). For some of their later mid to late 80's you can check out "Lick it up" or for a more ballad flavor check out "Forever".

Now the Non Makeup 80s you have "Lick it up", "Heaven's on Fire" ,"Lets put the X in Sex", "Tears are Falling", "Forever" (a song played in my Wedding),. I could put a LOT more but if you just do ONE of these songs you'll see their range as a band! the KISS ARMY 🤘 😈😾👾🌟

KISS had always billed themselves as a stage band. They would put it all out there with every performance and made sure their audiences had their minds blown every time. Theatricality was their hook and they were responsible for rock shows becoming ..... rock shows. Prior to them., live performances consisted of the band members, their instruments, a sound system and that was it. KISS brought in pyrotechnics, lasers, flamethrowing guitars, smoke machines, fire-breathing and anything else you can think of when you think of stage production value. It all started with them.

That's very innacurate though. For one thing, you ignored the difference between lead guitar (played by Ace) and rhythm guitar (played by Paul). But what's worse, it's just nonsense to credit Peter with lead vocals only on "Beth". He sang lead vocals ever since the eponymous first album released in 1973 (ever heard of "Black Diamond"?) and every album on which he played featured at least one song sang by him on lead vocals, songs such as "Strange Ways", "Getaway", "Beth" of course, "Hard Luck Woman" (which was quite a hit as well), "Hooligan" or "Dirty Livin'". Ace on the other hand first sang lead vocals for the first time only in 1977 on his song "Shock Me" from the Love Gun album.
@BlackieNuff
@BlackieNuff Жыл бұрын
@@lolomgmetobavi How am I "inaccurate"? Just cos I was not as specific as you would like me to be on certain things? Such as the guitar duties or Criss' vocal credits being limited to "just Beth"? Pardon the f*ck out of me for not being as much of a devout KISS fan as you seem to be. I have always only had a casual appreciation for SOME of their tunes, and only recently decided to acquire their entire catalog as I discovered I liked a bit more than "just the hits" (and I'm still missing a couple of titles ; mainly just Alive IV and the Unplugged Carnival whatever it's called), and I am not yet familiar with all their material much less have it all memorized who performs what guitar work or lead vocals from one song/album to the next. Lead guitar, rhythm guitar, it's all the same to me. If it aint bass, drums, or keyboards, then they're interchangeable as far as I am concerned. Guitar is guitar. I'm not that kind of music snob to the point where I fuss over the semantics of whether a performer plays leads, rhythms, solos, or any combination thereof or how many of each in any given song on any given number of albums - I just don't give a damn. As long as it all sounds good, I'm happy. If I get more into the band, then perhaps I may eventually care more about their individual contributions and credits. But until then, what I posted above is sufficient enough, especially for newbies like I was or still am. I dunno if you're just being an annoying troll looking for some lame self-amusement, or seizing an opportunity to flex and brag/showboat about your KISS knowledge? But either way, it's cringey and douchey. Don't do that. I mean, what's next? You gonna give Aileen a hard time for not being totally informed on every trivial factoid that every good KISS Army veteran knows inside out and backwards? If you wanna offer friendly context and expand on someone's limited knowledge, cool - but don't be an elitist twat about it, using words like "very inaccurate" and pointing out everything I "ignored", and then pile on with "what's worse" and your condescending attitude on if I've "ever heard of" particular songs that even casual KISS listeners like myself couldn't possibly NOT know (that is at least, know _of_ if not know _well_ ). I was not "very inaccurate" - I was merely vague. What I said was not untrue, was it? It was completely true ; it was merely lacking specifics and context. I didn't "ignore" - I did not commit a deliberate snub, I simply wasn't aware enough to really care about such semantics, thus resulting in your ludicrous allegations of "inaccuracy". The only thing "inaccurate" here, is you and your unfair and pompous characterization of me and my comment. I doubt you'd appreciate it if you took a chance on chiming on a band you had limited knowledge of, simply wanting to contribute and participate in the discussion, and then got chastised and shamed for your efforts over your "ignorance". Take your shamefest and shove it.... m'kay? Whether it's music, movies, literature, or whatever, elitist snobs are NOT cool. Nobody likes them. So don't be one. PS - Come to think of it, God (Of Thunder) forbid you ever find my comment where I mistakenly credited "Hooligan" as a Gene vocal song - you might have a total conniption... Oh wellz...

@@39Hundred In fairness, it appears the band did try to give new members their own alter-ego personas Eric Carr (The Fox) and Vinnie Vincent (The Ankh Warrior), but they returned to the original quartet with The Spaceman (Tommy Thayer) and The Catman (Eric Carr). According to Wikipedia : _The band is famous for its iconic makeup designs, each of which represents a different character or persona. The original four designs consisted of : the "Starchild", the "Demon", the "Spaceman", and the "Catman". The band formerly included a practice of giving any new members a new persona, such as the "Fox" for Carr and the "Ankh Warrior" for Vincent; this practice was ended after Thayer and Singer took up Frehley's "Spaceman" and Criss's "Catman" personas respectively. When asked on the matter, Simmons stated, "Why wouldn't we use the classic makeup? We own it". Criss relinquished his rights to his makeup when he left the band in 2004, which he later regretted, saying, "I'm pissed at myself that my makeup slipped through my hands", while Frehley claims he licensed his design to the band and would get it back, a notion which Stanley has called "a fantasy"._ Starchild : Paul Stanley (1973-1983, 1990, 1996-2023) Demon : Gene Simmons (1973-1983, 1990, 1996-2023) Spaceman : "Space" Ace Frehley (1973-1982, 1996-2002) Tommy Thayer (2002-2023) Catman : Peter Criss (1973-1980, 1996-2000, 2002-2004) Eric Singer (2001-2002, 2004-2023) Fox : Eric Carr (1980-1983) Ankh Warrior : Vinnie Vincent (1982-1983)

The good news, I have been enjoying watching some of your older reactions. I have been focusing on the music I grew up with. From the smooth sounds of The Righteous Brothers, the captivating Pink Floyd, the dynamic Deep Purple, the over the top theatrics of KISS to the southern fried rock that is Lynyrd Skynyrd. It is an interesting cross section of music. So much music from that era to enjoy. Something I think you will enjoy is AC/DC at River Plate Argentina. Any of the songs from the concert are great, but I suggest starting with "Thunderstruck" or "Highway to Hell". AC/DC Live At River Plate was recorded in Buenos Aires in December 2009 when nearly 200,000 fans (over 3 sold-out nights) thunderously welcomed AC/DC back after a 13-year absence from Argentina. The crowd scenes are insane! I think it is time I tried to sleep again, so for now, TTFN!

Fun fact to giggle: In the MTV ranking of rockstars sleept with the most women. On number 1: Kiss bassist Gene Simmons with around 4000...dont know how they count that. Like they have pen and a list at hand all the time...well. On number 2: Lemmy (Motörhead Bassist and Frontman) with over 2000 sleept. Knowing his Biography and Lifestyle....i believe that without question. On number 3: suprisingly Rolling Stone Bassist(why all the bassists?!?!?)Bill Wyman with slightly under 2000 slept. Crazy times Love your reactions and nice to see you enjoying it. I would recommend "Detroit Rock City" next, because its more the real KISS shown. Also if you want some other tasty bites: Serj Tankian (SOAD Frontman solo) - Sky is over Evanescence - Lithium Linkin Park- Given Up Linkin Park - Crawling Linkin Park - Breaking the Habit System of a down - Hypnotize Have a nice day!

There is a twice as long version! This is a great reaction! Lead singer is Paul Stanley. He was actually the final Phantom of the Opera at the end of the 10 year run of the show at the Toronto Pantages theater so he had vocal chops at the level of Freddie Mercury throughout the 80s 90s and even early 2000s. Now he is in his mid-70s and of course father Time takes his toll. And this was actually the shortest most edited version of the song ever. If you listen to the original version off the album it’s notably longer but it’s also true that there is a extend the disco version that more than double the length of the song and actually adds (not just repeats) unheard original content from the original studio recording days. Dr Tom approved reaction!❤ PS: I have seen Kiss almost 40 times and met them multiple times, including Paul Stanley at the Toronto Pantages theater in a private meeting. Total gentleman. His life story, as told in his book “face the music“ is fascinating, especially as I hear you discuss issues regarding mental health about which Paul is very open about his.

Great reaction! This was during KISS' peak years, in the late 70's, during their DYNASTY tour! In my opinion, their best costumes, and way glam and over the top! I was 17, and saw this show live at Madison Square Garden! Just got my NJ driver's license, and went into the city with 3 friends to go see this tour... GREAT times!

You would have fit right into a Kiss show in the 70s. Now, just so you know, this is a dabbling in disco. Not the typical Kiss sound, but I think you will love even the harder stuff. kiss are epic for a reason.

Aileen, I saw Kiss in concert 3 times. One concert I went to they started playing the song and then quit and said, "We can't play it becuase we did not bring their white suits" Referring to Saturday Night Fever with John Travolta and the Disco Era. Everyone said it was a disco song not a rock song. LOL That was in the 1980s and I still remember like it was yesterday.

I'm a huge KISS fan since I was in Jr. high in the 70's. They were one of the first concerts I went to at Denver Coliseum. Later I took my 14 year old daughter to see them and an Indian casino in So Cal. Gotta check out Detroit Rock City, Rock and Roll All night, Love Gun and the ballad sung by Peter Criss, Beth which became a big hit on the pop charts.

Paul Stanley is one of the best front men in rock, yet so underated. He has it all, the voice, the moves, and the raw talent and 100 percent SEXY!!! I was made for loving you was highly criticized as being "disco " in 1979 but in truth it is a rocker. I always said it would be my first dance at my wedding. Get everyone on the floor.

I saw them at Sonic Temple Festival in Columbus, OH. I am so glad I got to see them before they retired. They put on a hell of a show during their farewell tour. We'll see if they really do retire because they've talked about it a few times, but they kept going. They gave us so much energy live, I couldn't believe they were in their 70s. I thought they were teenagers. They were the headliner for the night, so they were on stage for quite a while. Anyway, I was really glad to see them at least once. Keep it metal. \m/

Though at the time isnt wasnt well received by hardcore KISS fans,it has become a staple of their shows.When they formed in 1973 they wanted to be the band they never saw.Some bands went for the glam look.They made the 4 characters to fit their likes personalities.(Guitar / co vocals) Paul Stanley "The Starchild" wanted to be a rock star from an early age.(Bassist co vocals) Gene Simmons (The Demon) loved comic books & horror.)lead guitar) Ace Frehley "The Spaceman) was into science fiction."drummer" Peter Criss (The Catman) loved cats & grew up in a rough section of Brooklyn.He thought he had 9 lives.They have hard rock songs but they have rock ballads.They have theatrics fake blood,fire,& smoking guitars
