Explanation: Eugene Shoemaker was a geologist and founder of modern planetary science. He studied craters on Earth and on the moon and realized that they were created by asteroid impacts. Shoemaker was the lead geology researcher for Apollo missions, and he also helped train the Apollo astronauts who went to the moon. He himself was a candidate for an Apollo Moon flight, but was disqualified after being diagnosed with Addison's disease. Later in life, he said, "Not going to the moon and hitting it with my own hammer has been the biggest disappointment in life." Schoenmaker spent much of his later years searching for undiscovered impact craters around the world. He died on July 18, 1997 in a car accident in Australia, where he studied craters. In recognition of his scientific achievements, part of his ash was brought to the moon by the Lunar Prospector spacecraft in 1999. His final resting place is close to the moon's south pole, in the Shoemaker crater named after him. The shoemaker's urn was engraved with a quote from Romeo and Juliet: "And when he will die... Unpack it and cut it out into small asterisks And he will make the face of heaven so beautiful That the whole world will be in love with the night And don't show worship to the bright sun." He is the only man buried on a celestial body other than earth. After his death, he was finally able to go where he always wanted to be. Greetings from the Netherlands.

When I first heard this on the album I thought they would never be able to do this live. Wrong! They did it perfectly. And Floor absolutely nailed the operatic part at the end. She never ceases to amaze me.

Welcome back to Nightwish!!! This was from their 2020 "Human :II: Nature" CD. They JUST finished the mixing on their NEW CD being released this year in 2024!!!! Tuomas, Keyboardist and Composer, wasn't sure they could do this one live but Floor convinced him and EVERY time she knocks that ending Operatic part OUT the park!!!! You should check out the Live performance at Hellfest 2022

This song is a tribute to Eugene Shoemaker, a metorologist who mapped craters on the moon to plan for the moon landing. He also visited various meteorite sites on Earth and died in Australia in a car crash while visiting a site. His ashes were deposited on the moon in a container which had the quotation from Romeo and Juliet written on it. Once you know that it is worth revisiting the song.

Some notes- Shoemaker pays tribute to Eugene Shoemaker, I think, who was a planetary geologist whose ashes are buried on the moon. -There are three singing in the chorus. Floor, Troy and Marco. The voice quoting Shakespeare is Tuomas' wife -Ladato Si = Praise Be -Ad Astra = To The Stars I highly recommend you check out their video for the song Noise

First, Believe you me, this is beyond Epic in Live version !!!! So ,... Eugene Merle Shoemaker (April 28, 1928 - July 18, 1997) was an American geologist. He co-discovered Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 with his wife Carolyn S. Shoemaker and David H. Levy. This comet hit Jupiter in July 1994: the impact was televised around the world. Shoemaker also studied terrestrial craters, such as Barringer Meteor Crater in Arizona, and along with Edward Chao provided the first conclusive evidence of its origin as an impact crater. He was also the first director of the United States Geological Survey's Astrogeology Research Program. He was killed in a car accident while visiting an impact crater site in Australia. After his death, some of his ashes were carried to the Moon with the Lunar Prospector mission. The spoken word in this is done by Tuomas Holopainen's Wife Johanna Kurkela ( a section from Romeo And Juliet is also carved Eugene's urn ). "Shoemaker" has become a favorite song of NASA's scientific community. Tuomas has a deep inclination towards science and this is reflected in many of his plays. This ensured the entry of Nightwish into the history books of science, several discoveries in the field being named after them. These new discoveries include: Alpenglow Rockshelter: Archaeological site named after Nightwish Song. Tanidromites Nightwishorun: New Crab species. Sciophila Holopaineni: New species of Mosquito found in Finland. Ophiomitrella Floorae: New species of Cretaceous brittle star named after Floor Jansen. Only 13 Nightwish videos in your playlist. You have just scratched the surface. For this song, I do like the lyric video. Movie soundtrack style is a trademark of Nightwish. Tuomas (keyboards) the composer and lyricist, loves movie soundtracks and classical composers, as well as prog and metal bands.

A Dutch symphonic(and more) metal band, with, like Floor is, singer Simone Simons, with the voice of an angel🤗 Suggestion: react to Consign to oblivion, live at the Zenith or, more recent at AFAS LIVE in Amsterdam.. you will NOT be dissapointed!

I really liked your verbal and emotional reactions, and I can see that you have an ear for beautiful music. What I don't understand about you Americans are your associations. Your comparisons to movie music, which I keep hearing in Nightwish responses. Europe has an infinitely long musical tradition and this is also used again and again in modern pieces. We Europeans find comparisons mainly to pieces of music by Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, Mozart, Ravel or the many other composers and less often to films. This is because film scores are usually also based on classical European music! It would certainly be an interesting listening experience for you, there is enough classical European music on the net. Thank you very much for your nice reply.

Floor was not the first singer with classical training to join Nightwish. Tarja established the classic vocals in metal and Floor is just a successor. @Justin: What other band can sing...? Nightwish with TARJA and of course Epica with Simone Simons! You really really have to checkt out Epica, the 2nd unbelivable Symphonic Metal Band next to NW. Start with a ballad. Simone was made for ballads. Epica feat Apocalyptoca "Rivers" AFAS live or "Once upon a Nightmare" OMEGA Alive. You will be blown away.
