This song is just part of the entire story told on the Wall album. Its all about the mental wall he has built around him self to protect his own psyche from the stardom, failed relationships, drug abuse, mother and father issues, cruelty of the schools and social structure, etc etc. You really have to hear the album from beginning to end to understand all the songs on it. This album really is a masterpiece.

The man in the chair with the dark jumper on is Bob Geldof the lead singer from a 70's punk band called the Boomtown Rats, he played Pink in the film The Wall but his greatest claim to fame is setting up the Live Aid concerts in the Uk and US for the starving millions in Africa. Also the scenes of the fighting against the police was very reminisenct of what life was like in Northern Ireland in the 70's

This is not an official video, that's footage from a movie I can't recognize, not the wall, although the footage would fit perfectly on side 4 of the Wall in "Run Like Hell. If you watch the movie, you'll know. This whole side 3 of the Wall (I'm thinking of it as a vinyl record because albums were planned that way, and the Wall specially is set in 4 stages(a double LP, 4 sides) . Side 3 is my favourite, it's Pink's descent into madness and isolation. Phenomenal. By the way, Hey You is an album only track, it doesn't feature in the movie! That was a crime. React to Run Like Hell studio and live! Isn't a very uplifting and indispensable.

Floyd are renowned for their incredible lyrics. They wrote some of the best lyrics of all-time. Poetic, cutting, philosophical, political, metaphorical, profound, beautiful and occasionally with a streak of dry, deadpan humour. Lyrically they had it all, so it's hard to point to a single song and say, 'this is the most lyrical'. You'll get plenty of suggestions but 'Time' would be a good place to start. Just bear in mind that they often write 2 or more meanings into a song. Usually a specific meaning, as well as a more general meaning, that can apply to the 'everyman'. Thus many lyrics reflect multiple meanings and can be both literal and metaphorical. Add in your own personal meanings and you have an abundance of meaning. :)

But like every time with Pink Floyd, i advise you.the whole album . I stumbled across one of your videos in which you were listening to "Dark side of the moon", and I enjoyed the way you analyzed and understood it, so I followed your analysis of this album. The Wall is a masterpiece that it is one big loop. The end and the beginning match up perfectly. The last thing said is 'isn't this where'. The very first thing you hear at the beginning is 'we came in?' Remember this album came out on 8track, and they are just one big tape loop. You should really listen to the whole album first.

You had to live in the 70s to relate though it certainly applies today. I'd recommend Echoes ( live in Pompeii) or Time is great. Sorrow ? Another Brick in the Wall ? I first saw em in 73. I was 13. Saw em 3 times after. Huge body of work to choose from, but it's all relevant regardless of period. Humans gonna Human ,and Floyd digs deep into the Flaws of the human condition. My favorite band and I've seen most of the greats.

Watching the Live in Pompeii recording is a must, it's probably the most epic concert ever held, and with no audience besides the dead. Echoes (part 1 and 2) are awesome, very fitting songs to play at that concert. It's funny watching the bloopers recording that song when the drummer deliberately sung his lines in that exaggerated high pitch to piss Gilmore off lol

I think this song could be about someone trying to help a drug addict to kick his habit . The guitar solo before " It was only fantasy" is the helper telling the addict a story of someone who didn't make it and O Ded on the street. Then the "worms ate into his brain"as his body decomposed. The next solo is growing desperation. The helper is afraid the same thing is going to happen to his friend. The helper wants for the addict to think about helping someone else besides himself obtaining more drugs. The addict is getting more desperate tearing the place apart looking for something to pawn(breaking bottles in the hall). The helper is pleading for the addict to not lose hope. The addict is planning to jump off a tall buiding. The helper successfully talks him down.

Yes, multiple interpretations possible -- once again, the mark of true *art*. Excellent react. I concur with others to listen to the entire album; that was the era when some bands made 'concept albums' (a la Queensryche, others). Humble suggestions for music from that general era which you may enjoy: the band Triumph, with these 3 songs (in this order), Fight The Good Fight, Magic Power, and Lay It On The Line.

My thought has always been the "Wall" was the Berlin Wall, which exasperated Germany for so long. The riots shown I think represent the revolution to bring down the wall, which finally happened and united their country. Pink Floyd actually did a concert after that happened in support of that.

The couple in the chairs weren't adulterers. They were married. She just didn't want to carry the burden he placed on her. This was well into Pink's descent into alienation. What more can I say, without destroying your first listen to the album? By the way, the violent riot was done by British skinheads. The producers placed a callout, the skinheads volunteered for no pay.

Yes, as so many others have mentioned, if you listen to just one song off any of their concept albums, like The Wall, you do lose context and will be confused as all you get, other than an utterly great song, is a snippet of a greater story like only they can tell. You need to hear the whole album sometime, we did this all the time back then with no social media and 21st century life distractions, so we could just get lost in the music and see a grand story unfold. Between Roger Water's lyrics and the otherworldly musical savants that everyone in that band was you get the apex of human musical achievement, no one ever made better albums than them and their are very few in the conversation with them for who was the best. Next, try something live from back in their prime, try Echoes, parts 1 & 2, from the 1972 Live at Pompeii concert movie. They set up their equipment in the middle of the ancient Roman Colloseum tbere, which was buried by volcanic ash when Vesuvius erupted 2,000 years ago. Much of the ancient city has been excavated and Floyd wanted to do the show there partly for all the souls who were lost on that day, long ago. It is a classic performance of them taking flight and bringing us all along for the ride. David Gilmour does the erupting this time around and the whole band is inspired by the location. You should watch the whole movie when you can but Echoes opened and closed the movie, which is why it is in 2 parts. Enjoy! 🎵🎸🎤🎹🎷🎶

Roger Waters (bass & vocals) wrote 'The Wall' about his own isolation... At the time, Pink Floyd was bigger than ever... but internally, the band was falling apart. Waters was aware that he was completely cut off from his bandmates, his loved ones, and he had done this to himself. 'Hey you' begins the 2nd disc of 'The Wall' which portrays Waters having built 'the wall' and is talking from behind it, trying to reach the others but is unable to... His friend (Pink Floyd founder) Syd Barrett is hinted as one of the characters he's trying to reach ("and the worms ate into his brain"... refers to Barrett and his descent into insanity) In 'The Wall' movie... the character 'Pink' is a performer who descends into madness and the actor (Bob Geldof) portrayed some of what Waters had seen w/ Syd Barrett... the movie depicted 'Pink' becoming a fascist figure in his madness... Sadly, the saying goes that u could live long enough to become what u despise the most... and Roger Waters recently has been spouting pro-Russian rhetoric in the midst of the Ukraine war... Perhaps the movie was an omen of what would come... David Gilmour (guitar & vocals) recalls Pink Floyd being in disarray by 1978... Roger Waters would write most of the songs, and he and keyboardist Richard Wright were left w/ little to do... Wright was soon fired from Pink Floyd. Gilmour said that Waters would disappear and show up w/ most of the songs written without any band input, and Gilmour only contributed some music & some production duties... but the band did their best in the studio. In the end, he felt that "The Wall" lacked soul... and he couldn't argue w/ Waters cos he was so isolated from everyone and would not listen. Ultimately, Roger Waters left Pink Floyd in 1984 and sued Gilmour in 1986 to not use the Pink Floyd name. Most lyrical Pink Floyd song? Hmmm.... 'High hopes'.

É o "Us and Them" (Música do outro álbum), do dia a dia.

The most lyrical? The Gunner’s Dream from The Final Cut. Absolutely stunning song and performance, especially Roger Waters’ vocal. Their earlier music was more atmospheric, and I’d highly recommend Echoes, One of These Days, Careful With That Ade Eugene, and Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun. Live versions are even better, although the studio version of Echoes is a must listen. For later music, it’s pretty much entire albums: Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here, Animals, The Wall, and The Final Cut. Later material was good too, but these are the essential ones. Each album has a different lyrical theme, and Roger Waters was at the top of his game lyrically for these albums.

When Nick Mason's "Pink Floyd: Their Mortal Remains" exhibit was in Los Angeles, there was a video with an interview with Roger Waters where he talks about this song. Its a reflection on Waters during the "Animals" period where he was aliening himself from society "Standing in the aisles with itchy feet and fading smiles". After the incident in Toronto where he spat on one of the concert goers, he started realizing he was wrong and tries to "reconnect" with his listeners "With your ear against the wall waiting for someone to call out". But, he found that he had isolated himself so much that he was finding it impossible to do "The wall was too high, as you can see. No matter how he tried, he could not break free". He starts asking his listeners to forgive him "Out there beyond the wall, breaking bottles in the hall. Can you help me?". He tells his listener's this isn't just my problem. Unless you are willing to listen to my music and pay attention to the meaning, rather than use it just to party to, I may stop making music altogether "Don't tell me there's no hope at all. Together we stand. Divided we fall". I'm not a real big fan of the man's politics or his bass playing (most of what you hear is actually David Gilmour on a Fender fretless Jazz bass). But, you have to give credit where credit is due. The man can string words together in such a way that, no matter what, you can apply it to something in your life.

From what I can tell, that is a fan made video. Please do yourself a favor and watch The Wall, The quality of sound you experience it with will be very important as the movie is only 9 min longer than the album. I promise you will want/need to watch it again as it will cause sensory overload in an amazing way. I'd watch with a detailed orientated friend as well.

The video you used is not official and the audio is slightly accelerated and a tiny bit higher in pitch. The tempo is slightly rushed.

None of the songs on The Wall can really be explained as separate entities…it’s all part of one big story culminating in a spectacular trial. Amazing Album, Show, Film

Thanks for your love of music. I appreciate your journey as you discover new artists and enjoy your insights. As others have said, this song is best interpreted in the context of the album The Wall, which was a concept album dealing with social and personal pressures and emotional isolation. In this song, the narrator has built up a mental and emotional wall for self-protection from harsh reality and is crying out for intimacy and human empathy

As for songs with great lyrical content from Pink Floyd, I would recommend "Time/Breathe (reprise)" from their Dark Side of the Moon album. It is a wonderfully grim philosophical song whise interpretation holds up when heard indivudually despite that album also being somewhat of a concept album

Once you realize that "The Wall' represents the psychological barriers he has built over the years to isolate himself from harm, and that he now finds himself trapped within, the entire film and album(s) become clear. A truly stunning piece of work imo.
