Bono is arguably one of the great poets of our generation. So often his turn of phrase transcends "song lyrics" to say something really profound. "Play Jesus to the lepers in your head" is another amazing line from this song.

What you cannot see since this band is from a different era is that they are anything but corporate. They were very unique and when they exploded on the scene nobody had ever heard anything like them before. So much of the sound of the past 30 years has been influenced by this band. U2 fan, Guns N' Roses singer Axl Rose, recounted in Bill Flannagan's definitive biography, U2 at the End of the World: I think "One" is one of the greatest songs that have ever been written. I put the song on and just broke down crying. It was such a release. It was really good for me. I was really upset that my ex-wife and I never had a chance because of the damage in our lives. We didn't have a chance and I hadn't fully accepted that. The song helped me see it. I wanted to write Bono a letter just saying "Your record's done a lot for me."

U2 has so many great songs, they may now be considered more mainstream, but they were quite edgy and its more that the younger generation hears it as their parents music in my opinion. The Apple thing was just dumb. Anything off of the War, Joshua Tree, Achtung Baby albums are going to be great. Rattle and Hum is also an amazing live album that also has a couple great cover songs and has BB King play with them on one of their songs. Lots worth listening to with this band.

U2 is a band that has a long history, and while their lineup has remained consistent, their sound has evolved dramatically. If you go back to the earliest days of the band in about 1980, they were very brash and raw. Then in the mid-80s they evolved into a more bluesy and rock sound. And then as they moved into the 1990s they had some songs with a progressive sound and some songs that were very much influenced by EDM and electronica. They are still active (they toured as recently as 2019 before the pandemic). One of the consistencies in the themes of the band's songs, regardless or era or musical style choices, is a strong left-of-center political stance. There are songs that speak to the plight of immigrants, abuses of oppressed peoples, victims of social injustices, and those caught in the crossfire of conflicts based on the decisions of those in power far far away. Often you will hear Christian messages in their music, and that sometimes tends to turn off some audiences who can find some of their songs "preachy." U2 is one of my favorite bands of all time, and I find much of their music soulful and many of their lyrics thought-provoking. I think you two will enjoy exploring the many layers and sounds and styles of U2 as you continue your journey.

Bono had an amazing voice when he was younger. Early U2 had some really good stuff. I love the video for Bad from the Rattle & Hum tour, it really shows them at their best. U2 became more corporate with time, it's not One or their early stuff that people say its corporate.

@Marco Lopez it's useless UNLESS IT'S THE ORIGINAL VIDEOS! Can you imagine them LISTENING TO What's The Streets Have No Name...NO VIDEO AT ALL? JUST WITH their ridiculous lyric version thrown up on the screen? Seriously bro? HOW disrespectful is that s*** that is band? You AND I AND everybody else here knows you might as well just not even cover their material if you're NOT gonna do it right. It's the same as if you're saying let's all listen to Van Halen...the David Lee Roth years... Pick any song any year... LIVE performance... But anytime that he's not singing and moving about the stage we're not going to allow them to watch that part okay? Yeah...it's the SAME trade off.

Well, I think there's a difference between "becoming corporate" and just maturing as an artist/businessperson in the cesspool that is the music biz. Also they have had the same original members and for 40+, they're all with their first wives except for one, and that was a high school crush thing, and they've raised hundreds of millions for humanitarian charities as a band and individually. IDK, maybe that's irrelevant to your comment, I just think four guys with a lot of character and that ethical in their personal lives aren't going sell out. Usually with artists/bands, I either like the older stuff more or new mature stuff more, U2 is one of the few groups I like both old and new.

The funny thing is that this song is about estrangement - in a relationship between a man and a wife, as well as a son and a father. I think that the chord structure (which is very similar to "Stand By Me" - ironically) is what leaves people thinking happy thoughts even though the song is definitely not happy lol. I'd suggest "Please" or "Running to Stand Still" as 2 other U2 songs to definitely check out.

He spontaneously jumps off stage & pulls her to safety holding her, dancing & singing to her. He pulls others. The band being the ABSOLUTE PROFESSIONALS they are dropped "Pride" but never missed a beat. They managed to play a stunning 14-minute rendition of "Bad" while Bono displays the ultimate human connection. Love. THAT'S U2! "I'm wide awake! I'm wide awake! Led Zeppelin and U2 are my favorite bands. U2 formed in 1976. It's all about the lyrics with U2. Well not all, but the lyrics are fabulous. Most of their music is not Target music. One was actually written during a stressful time for the band. They were recording in Berlin trying to come up with a new album and Edge was going through a breakup with his first wife. The lyrics reflect that stress and complexity. Most people are going to recommend the standard U2 songs. I say go for these songs...I Will Follow. Drowning Man, Bad, The Three Sunrises, When Love comes to Town(feat. B.B. King), Bullet the Blue Sky, Exit (Really just the entire Joshua Tree album), Mysterious Ways or just the entire Achtung Baby album(It's a total departure from there earlier music), Stay(Far away so close), Mofo, Gone, In a Little While, ***Miracle Drug***, Song for Someone, Landlady. Those songs are all in chronological order off their albums. Enjoy.

Interesting comment when you said people would leave a store like Target after hearing this feeling better..... I dragged a few non U2 fans, you could even say U2 haters to a concert back in 2005. We left the show and they were all blown away with a new found respect for them and one friend actually said "I've never left a concert feeling like i could change the world before. I just felt so much love at that show"..... I will always remember him saying that especially since he was the one who disliked them the most prior to the concert.

Thats a heavy song man, atleast the lyrics are. Bono is such an amazing singer and songwriter. His vocal range and delivery are on another level. I recommend you guys delving deeper into U2's catalog of music. You won't be disappointed. Love the content as always. Thank you for doing what you do!

U2 is one of the most amazing bands of all time. When I put my U2 playlist together, I told myself to only pick the best songs so it wouldn't be overloaded. So, I just picked the songs I thought were fabulous or better. I've got 49 songs in that playlist. If you wrote down every U2 song on its own Sticky Note and wallpapered your room with them, you could put on a blindfold, spin around and throw a dart, and you'd end up pulling your dart out of a great song. Throw a dart and see.

Lex you are spot in about it being "underplayed". You might want to watch their playing this live with Mary Jay Blige. It's absolutely brilliant and she brings such energy and passion to the performance with her absolutely brilliant voice. I think you both would love it!!! You guys are great!!! Love your reactions. Thank you 😊.

My favorite song of all time since I was in middle school & I'm now 50. That's a long time for a song to still be your favorite - but it is. I guess I identify with that song. What does that say about me? I've always thought about that.

I thoroughly enjoyed your breakdown of “Zombie” by the Cranberries and in keeping with that same vein, “Sunday, Bloody Sunday” might be a U2 song you might want to check out. Both tunes are referring to “The Troubles” (or as Brad likes to say “The Conflict”) throughout Ireland, particularly Northern Ireland, during the 60’s through to the 90’s. One of my favorite versions is “Live at Slaine Castle” recorded in 2001. “Give it a go” as they would say in Ireland.

"new year's day" is my favorite U2 song. one of their earlier tunes, which of course always means it's better, haha. up-beat, but at the same time a bittersweet song about longing, yearning. and a great example of their early sound using lots of reverb and delay on the instruments that gives it a mysterious atmospheric sound.

@VICKIE JENKINS HOLY CROW! Now that rendition of this song actually one of the best versions I've ever seen. BUT TBH, once I heard she was going to be on this doing a duet with him? I practically wet the rug like a puppy! 😂 I'm a long time fan of her music because her voice is like gold and I've been a fan of his since she first hit the scene. I just feel that she's a beautiful performer and when you listen to her interview she's a wonderful woman inside and out and it just shines through when she speaks to the person who's interviewing her.
