You can get a good depth with a roller but you need a roller specifically made for plaster. They have little spindles on them that pick up the filler and allow for a deeper coverage. The result you got looks great though.

I just loved using the roller and for big expanses of wall it would be even better. The best thing about DIY is that there is always something more to learn. Painted the fireplace today and love the way it looks. Will put on video tomorrow.

That's a great idea to remove the skirting board as it will give the plaster a flush look

That is the hope and if so then all the extra work will be worthwhile. I cant wait to see how effective the underfloor heating is going to be because that room so cold as to be almost unusable. Anyway thanks for the comment it helps to keep me going and progressing.

The reason the plaster line does not go down to the floor is to prevent rising damp creeping up the plaster.

I can understand that downstairs but this is an upstairs bedroom so not sure what the reason was up there.

Plasterers usually dont plaster to the floor because it has a chance of picking up dirt and dragging it through. Usually not worth the risk and skirting boards will be on anyway to cover the last bits

Just pay a proper spread and have it done in a day

Too expensive in the London area and not so easy to find one. I also do need new challenges to keep body and mind as fit as possible.
