We can't understand. Doesn't mean we don't hurt for family that died before we were born, some of us were named for. I am Canadian. Generations of military service both sides of my family. When we loose a father or uncle or brother that name is passed on along with the memories of who they were. It is alot to live up to.

Great storytelling, great voice . I like that he didn't switch up the lyrics to reference Iraq or Afghanistan - the Vietnam vets often weren't treated well on their return. The recruit was depressed, not the waitress. The Chicks version is really chilling - one of their best songs, and their three-part harmony works really well for this. Soldier died, and the only person who remembers him is the piccolo player in the marching band.

If you want to hear a female perspective but not necessarily the Dixie Chicks version, Aaron Lewis (lead singer of Staind) released several country albums and on one of them he covered this song but his daughter is the one who sang it. It works so well!

Even the Dixie Chicks version was even a cover. The first version was by the song’s writer, Bruce Robison, who was a Texas country singer/songwriter. Then it was covered by another country artist, Ty England, sometime later. Then the Dixie Chicks covered it, and just happened to have the biggest hit with it.

When I first heard this song hit home for me...Having served in the Navy as field medic for eight years deployed over seas for months at time you can't imagine how much a letter or a call from home means to a service member...You could have had the worse day and you get that letter or a call from home and suddenly your on top of world...When I was deployed my wife and would Valentine Day cards to each other...One year I had to send her one a couple months early. Well when I got to base from a mission there was a card waiting for me...I opened it up and it was the card I had sent to her I thought that maybe i put the wrong address down but I opened it had a letter on it that she had wrote.I thought would she send me my card back and I noticed mail was a few days before I had sent my card...Its wild but we had picked out the same card and sent it to each other...and after she passed I still have both of them in a frame.

Vietnam was such a tough war. It was so so politicized and the soldiers were treated horribly when they came “home”. America had “citizens” that would go there and denounce the US Govt and US soldiers that were there fighting.

This is ok, but I think the Chicks version is better. Just personal preference. The official video version is taken from concert footage, and everything about it will pull on your heartstrings, from the plaintive harmonies on the chorus, to the wistfulness when singing the solder's parts, to the musical arrangement. Fiddle, steel and acoustic guitar, mandolin, and snare drum blend with other sounds to create a musical set on which the story plays out. *tl/dr: story and a bit of ranting below* The story of Vietnam is a really low point in US history. We shouldn't have been there, we weren't prepared for the kind of fight that was going on, and it was incredibly unpopular back home. Sadly, far too many people took their anger about it out on the soldiers, who were just following their orders and many were drafted, not volunteers. You'll hear references to the terrible situation during and after the war for vets in a lot of songs from the 80s, like "Born in the USA" and "Give Me Something to Believe In". It's all very personal to me, because my dad is a Vietnam Vet and it has continued to impact him to this day. He has never opened up about anything specific that happened, just generalities. He lost all his personal possessions when his bunk was destroyed by an enemy mortar, thankfully not when he was sleeping or relaxing in it. He also got multiple citations for bravery for actions under enemy fire. He played those off by saying they gave them out any time they found a bullet hole in a helicopter after a mission, he was a mechanic and helicopter crew in the Airborne, but cross-referencing it with other stories he did tell (always with a comedic spin), the mortar attack wasn't the only time he came under enemy fire and he did earn the merits. Now, in his retirement, he had to have surgery for prostate cancer that has affected his quality of life, and he has increasing memory issues, with no family history of either. The cancer is directly linked to agent orange exposure, to the point where men of his age group are the only group in the 'Over 50s' in the US where cancer is the leading cause of death, rather than heart disease as it is for all other men and women over 50. Agent Orange also doubles the risk of dementia in vets versus other groups, and is probably what he is heading towards with his memory issues. It can also increase the chance of Type 2 diabetes, which he also developed in spite of never being considered obese. Thankfully, we have a good VA hospital here and he has full veteran's benefits that cover everything, but none of that can fix his memory, his diabetes, or his other complications. Vietnam is the war that keeps on giving.
