People don't remember how much children loved Elvis. I don't know why. But seeing him with Lisa-marie was such a joy. I was about 6 when I fell in love with Elvis, so parents bought me all his records and I watched all his films. He sung nice sweet songs, he smiled nice, his eyes twinkled with mischievous. The day he died, I was seven. My mother woke me out of my sleep gently to tell me, the sun hadn't risen yet. All I remember I danced like a crazy thing, all day long, in tribute. Crying all the time, untill i finally collapsed. For many children, Elvis the singerman, with manners, laughter, and energy, meant a heck of a lot. And yes I was a black kid, Elvis touched the hearts of many. ❤ Loving you always.

Elvis was born in Tupelo, Mississippi, and moved to Memphis when he got older I believe. He attended black churches as a kid and loved the singing of the choir. So, his music came from black musicians and culture. Though some black artists resented him for that.

"American Trilogy" is actually a sample of three different songs covering three different American perspectives: "Dixie Land" is a southern civil war hymn. "All my Trials" is a Caribbean slave hymn and "Battle Hymn of the Republic" is the Union civil war representation. It's supposed to be a unifying song. Elvis's contribution is of course, iconic, with his dramatic arrangements and huge voice.

1973 the year I graduated high school, we watched the entire broadcast from Hawaii as a family. Wasn't that amazing! My sisters grew up in love with Elvis (what girl didn't) and the boys loved the Elvis movies because of the beautiful girls in them. Elvis said his biggest regret was getting pushed into the movie contract. He hated doing those movies, although I am sure he got a lot of money for them. In his later years with the drug abuse he went down quickly. I believe his last performance was in my home town of Rapid City South Dakota. He barely got through that performance and was just horrible. We all felt so badly for him. What a loss!

Years ago, my parents went to Vegas, mainly to take in the shows, as well as do a little gambling. When they went to try to get tickets for a Frank Sinatra show, (they loved Frank Sinatra), they were turned away, as the show was sold out. Not wanting to just leave and go back to their room, they decided to see if they could tickets to see Elvis, which they were able to do. Now keep in mind that my parents were not fans of Elvis, I mean, they didn't like him or hate him, they just never cared for him. Well, once they left the show, they were extremely impressed with Elvis. They told me that Elvis was a true showman in every sense of the word. From that day on, they would listen to Elvis's music, as they really enjoyed it.

The ramp from the stage: Producer/Director Marty Pasetta told Parker he wanted to build a ramp, Parker said no. Pasetta said it would be 8 feet wide & Elvis could stay in the middle or he could go to the left or to the right if he wanted to (Pasetta knew how important the audience was to Elvis). Parker said no. Fortunately, Pasetta was able to meet w-Elvis & he explained exactly what he told Parker. Fortunately again, Elvis overrode Parker & told Pasetta to build the ramp. Pasetta told Elvis he wanted him to lose 25 lbs., which Elvis did. Elvis then hugged Pasetta & said you are one of the few people who has been totally honest w-me. Imagine how different that concert would have been if Elvis didn't have the option to get in close contact w-his audience. HE would have been just as spectacular, but without the ramp the concert would have had a very different feel.

The first I remember a song being played on the radio was Elvis in 1960. I was 3 y o. Mom and I had just dropped my brother and the carpool kids off at kindergarten. The AM deejay had mistakenly (maybe mistakenly) played the same song by Elvis twice in a row. I thought Elvis was at the radio station where Dad advertised live at times. Recordings and records were still foreign to this little kid. I begged Mom to drive to the station to meet Elvis. Finally, she explained about 45s being played at the radio station and that Elvis lived in Memphis and not in Decarur, Alabama... I was SO let down. But... true story...my Dad had surgery in Memphis to regain hearing loss from WWII. On a post-op visit to Memphis, my brother and I went and got Dad to drive by Elvis' house, Graceland. (The name became more famous after his death.) Well, the gate was open when we drove by. We had to turn around to get back to the motel, so my brother and I, maybe 10 and 12 y o, about died when Dad turned right into Graceland, thru the gate and right up to his house and turned off the car, a 1963 VW Beetle.. After about 3 minutes of absolute quiet gawking beneath the tall shade trees, except for Mom repeatedly asking Dad if this was wise, a fellow slowly walks out to the car and nicely asked, "Can I help y'all?" Dad explained he "was just letting 'the boys' see Elvis' house up close." He grinned like "country had come to town," as I was admiring the chain-linked fencing over the windows and the green fiberglass cover over what I imagined was his pool on the far end of the house. The man said, "Well, I guess y'all have seen it closer than most. It's time to leave." Dad kindly thanked him, started the car, and slowly drove down the hill back toward the front gate. (The brick gate posts wrre covered with girls' names written in colorful pastel chalk.) We couldn't believe what had just transpired, but I swear it happened just as I said, only in slo-motion (or so it seemed).

It's amazing, and yet unsurprising, how Elvis is still affecting people all these decades after his passing. He never took his fame for granted and never lost his extreme gratitude to his fans, and it showed. He not only sang but also knew exactly the way he wanted each song to sound like as a whole, personally auditioned his musicians, arranged many of his songs and directed his band with his body movements. One of his drummers said "I think we're the only band that's directed by an ass". He said his black female background singers brought out the soul in him. And has anyone mentioned that he never had any formal musical training and didn't even know how to read music?
