Out of respect to him, he died. He didn’t “pass”. If you watch his routine on soft language, you’ll understand.

@@williambryan3346 "Or I'll expire like a magazine subscription. If it happens in the hospital, they'll call it a "terminal episode". The insurance company will refer to it as "negative patient-care outcome". And if it's the result of malpractice, they'll say it was a "therapeutic misadventure" "... The 1980s was his "transition period" - he had about 4 "eras"; this was the third. He started out as a deeply old-school, suit-and-tie comic who did funny voices. Kennedy was President when Carlin's career really got going. Then, the late Sixties, oh boy. Long hair and beard, counter-culture comic, America's favorite comic too. But that whole attitude finally burned out: Reagan became President, and George was a little lost, but he never stopped working, building. At this time, he focused on his love for language, as the "Stuff" bit demonstrates. And for his last period starting in the 90s? The fiery, hilarious old prophet, throwing down truths like commandments. One of the great Americans. There's at least a dozen classic bits on KZbin to react to; have fun!

I’ve seen George in concert four times. I have listened to his specials so many times I can tell you which one it is just by listening to the opening clapping as he gets on stage. Yet, I have never heard your description as four eras of comedy. I agree with you 100% and it is a fantastic way to explain his comedy style to others from the beginning to end.

George is credited as being one of the smoothest deliveries ever. His memory is also crazy. Also, he was one of the first guys to have a seemless set. His transitions are barely noticeable at a time most just had random bits.

I have been listening to Carlin since I was 12 (1974) - probably shaped (or warped) my view of the world. I had the honour of seeing George live once. It was not a standup routine - he was speaking at UC Berkley ABOUT comedy. It was really cool to listen to him talk about the process by which he put his act together. It takes an enormous amount of work to pull together and organize all these bits and make it seamless while seeming like it is spontaneous. Also got to have him sign a copy of his book Brain Droppings. George is in fact from New York - he did a bit on one of his older albums (Occupation Foole) about how they called his neighbourhood "White Harlem" to sound cool, when its real name "Morning Side Heights" or something. If you want to get a feel for his background listen to the 70s albums (Class Clown, Occupation Foole, etc.)

All of George's routines are funny, and true, and usually gives you something to think about later. And there's decades of it. Try "Everyday Expressions", or "On some cultural issues", or "Saving The Planet", or "Flying". All hilarious, and all spot on!

When it comes to travelling with my stuff, I can never be without my hand-painted periwinkles. George Carlin grew up in NYC on the upper west side in a neighbourhood called Morningside Heights, which didn't sound tough enough so the locals renamed "White Harlem" as it was near Harlem and Spanish Harlem, though dominated by Irish Catholics. (From his album Class Clown)

The best comedian ever. He said things the way he saw them, no bullshit. Carlin wass able to go from low (fart jokes) to the high (politics, war and so on) and succeed with it. Obviously he was smart, otherwise he wouldn't have been able to succeed. I guess that it isn't easy ro make people laugh and seriously think at the same time, but eventually he did it.

I'm pretty sure his rant about "stuff" helped to formalize the Tiny Living Movement. Think about it. We live in a consumer culture, we buy houses to fill them with stuff that we buy. Have a tiny house though, and suddenly you have less space for less stuff. It makes you more conscious of your buying decisions. "Yeah, that giant food processor could be handy once in a while, but I don't have much space. So, do I really NEED it?" That's the truth of tiny-houses/van-life/boat-life right there, not buying into the consumer culture, if you'll pardon the pun lol.

"People say, 'I'm going to sleep now,' as if it were nothing. But it's really a bizarre activity. 'For the next several hours, while the sun is gone, I'm going to become unconscious, temporarily losing command over everything I know and understand. When the sun returns, I will resume my life.' If you didn't know what sleep was, and you had only seen it in a science fiction movie, you would think it was weird and tell all your friends about the movie you'd seen. They had these people, you know? And they would walk around all day and be OK? And then, once a day, usually after dark, they would lie down on these special platforms and become unconscious. They would stop functioning almost completely, except deep in their minds they would have adventures and experiences that were completely impossible in real life. As they lay there, completely vulnerable to their enemies, their only movements were to occasionally shift from one position to another; or, if one of the 'mind adventures' got too real, they would sit up and scream and be glad they weren't unconscious anymore. Then they would drink a lot of coffee.' So, next time you see someone sleeping, make believe you're in a science fiction movie. And whisper, 'The creature is regenerating itself.” "George Carlin"
