Steve is not just a singer. He is also a songwriter, album producer, drummer, keyboards and guitar player. He was a drummer in a former band. But he's a singer at the core. He sang around the house since he was a kid.

Yes! Regarding the passage at around 4:11 : Those of us who sing (I can't sing anywhere near like that), know that not only is it a feat to sing these notes in one single phrase.... But to sing this passage with such emotion and fluidity is exceptional. Ask any singer you know. All the technical things we singers think of such as compression, distortion, is here laid out as a master class in a single line. Believe me, there is not a single vocalist that hears this and does not marvel. It is the beauty of Steve Perry's voice that is the x-factor here. Inimitable!

Steve wrote this song about five years before joining Journey. A great song - sets a mood, doesn't it? 🙂

Incomprehensible how one of the best pieces of music ever created, done by a massively popular band, could remain so largely unknown to this day...how was it not released as a single?

One of my favorite Journey songs. My favorite Journey albums are 1978's Infinity and this album, 1979's Evolution. The note Steve Perry hits when he sings "It's what I like to do" the first time in the second chorus is out of this world.

My Favorite Journey Song, its absolutely beautiful. Steve's vocals and Neal's guitar solo is awesome. I have been listening to this since 1979n never gets old, gets me every time. The song was written in 1974 by Steve Perry, its about the beauty of Lake Tahoe.

Yes! You reacted to my favorite from Evolution. The harmonies, the pure guitar sound, simple keyboards and Steve’s soaring voice. Such a beautiful song. Thank you.

Love that you were smilin’ throughout my favorite song on the Evolution album. I love the entire Evolution album. Thank you Phil for the shoutout and Journey On my friend.

Wendy…I feel like a kindred spirit. I know why you love this one. Me too…for the same reasons. The group was just beginning to hit their stride and Perry, on this track alone, was able to prove why they hired him. This song is sacred Journey

This is one of the very few songs that Steve Perry never performed live I have always wondered why he never chose to sing it live throughout his career. He created a real gem here. I have never seen Perry even talk about this song.

No one else should ever attempt to sing this, or play these chords. This is the one and only Steve Perry, The Voice, with the incredible guitar riffs of Neal Schon.❤

Great song. Love Neal's jazz-blues guitar riffs in the background. Have you noticed they like to have just a cappella singing in parts of several songs? Great harmonies. I kind of wished they had recorded an entire a cappella song back then.

For another overlooked Journey song, try Remember Me; it's with Steve A in the band, from the movie soundtrack for Armageddon.

Ahh, late to the party again, I see... If I may, can I comment on the elephant in the room here? This song is obviously a gospel song inspired by the beauty of nature. If I'm not mistaken Mr. Perry was raised Catholic? But he wears a golden eighth note around his neck where most would wear a crucifix. Given to him by his Mother when he was 12 years old. He has alluded to a violation of his person that took place prior to that, which he has found is all too common among children, and that he found solace in music. Many who have been let down by organized religion in this way may find a form of catharsis in a beautiful, natural place. Someplace where they can be close to God without complicating things. Simple.
