Kate was bullied in her Catholic school. They pulled her out and put her in public school. Her solace was her music which she never told any friends about it. She came home everyday and instead of hanging out with friends, going to dances etc., she played her piano and created. She wrote over a hundred songs by her mid teens. Her whole family was musical and were a great supporter of her talent.

kate bush is a legend, a genius, the most talented artist since 50 years. Singer, writer, composer, dancer, producer, pianist and much more. Yes you should dive into her songs (for exemple : running up that hill, babooshka, army dreamers, this woman works, cloudbusting ... and a lot more...) thank you for this reaction, it's wonderful to see people hearing kate for the first time! I did in february 1978 🥲

Early in her career Kate often sang in a high register. On this song she intentionally heightens it even more as she is singing in the character of Catherine, a ghost haunting her former lover Heathcliffe. The song was inspired by a film adaptation of the novel "Wuthering Heights" by Emily Bronte. If you explore Kate more thoroughly, you'll find she usually sings and performs in character. She is one of the most artistic performers ever to have walked the earth. A true one of a kind musical genius.

I became a Kate Bush fan from the very start, as soon as I saw music video that was it. In response to Kate becoming very popular especially in North America, where she had never been that popular, due to "Running Up That Hill", playing a key role in the series "Stranger Things", I prepared a series of notes about various subjects including "Wuthering Heights" (which I will append to this comment). Prior to the notes, I will add that "Wuthering Heights" has a very unusual structure as a song, which also includes changes in timing and very unusual key changes (which shouldn't work but do), this meant that with Kate's vocals it was unlike anything else in the singles chart and it made a dramatic impact, even more amazing it was Kate's debut single release. ======== Notes ======= A while before Wuthering Heights was written, a younger Kate managed to catch the tail end of a BBC adaptation of the Emily Bronte novel Wuthering Heights when the ghostly Cathy was outside a window of Heathcliff's house wanting to be let in. Kate shares the same Birthday as Emily Bronte and when she was young she was referred to as cathy. In order to get a feel for Cathy Kate read part of the book, interestingly when she did get round to reading all of it after finishing writing the song, Kate noticed certain phrases from parts that she hadn't initially read had ended up in the Lyrics anyway. Kate said that when she sung this song, she was Cathy, she was channelling the character. Kate's vocal performance is a single take with no edits. Kate had to fight her record company to get Wuthering Heights to be her debut single, EMI had chosen a completely different track from her "The Kick Inside" album, in the end EMI released Wuthering Heights because they thought that it would fail and teach Kate a lesson, instead it became a worldwide smash hit. Hitting number 1 in Australia, Ireland, Italy, New Zealand, Portugal and the UK. It was at least a top 10 (or better) in nine other countries. A single chart performance that would only be surpassed in 2022 by "Running Up That Hill".

Her voice is to represent a ghost as part of the storyline. She is an artist in many performing arts.

the high register of her voice is because shes playing the ghost of cathy, for more context to what the song is telling you either read the book by emily bronte or watch one of the many films made about the book

It is absolutely real and as fantastic as it sounds, no filters, no auto tune, just pure and raw talent and musicality. You should read the novel "Wuthering Heights" by Emily Bronte. The song is a direct reflection of that novel, it is a tragedy I should warn you, but a really well written one. Both the novel and the song is gut wrenching, I think.

Kate is singing in a higher register on this song to better emulate the spirit (ghost) of Catharine. Nice job with your reaction.

Minnie Riperton (RIP) had a similar voice. A bit different, but she could go as high as Kate.
