Really if it's given some thought, 400 children doesn't make logical sense. Even a dozen is a lot of kids... 4 hundred? I was amazed that she accepted this, I mean she said wow that's crazy 400 but she didn't stop and consider that maybe she was mistaken and heard this wrong. And she just went through the rest of this song with it being to her 400 children wow lol... If I were her I would have said... that doesn't seem right and move it back to closely listen again, oh four hungry children yes that's better... even when he spoke it during the audience repeat part, she wasn't paying attention and she repeated 400... I think she thought it was a joke in the song to say 400 children and a crop on the field, so that is why she accepted her version of the lyrics and didn't question it...yes I hope Brit sees these comments, I'd like her to know, yes 400 is funny and would have been a great joke in the song but it's actually with four hungry children and a crop in the field...

You should check out Kenny's first band which was a psychedelic pop/rock/country band. Their big hit was "just dropped in". He originally did "Ruby" with them. Side trivia the drummer Mickey Jones" went on to have a very long and successful career as an actor with 169 acting credits per IMDB. Anyone from the 70 & 80s will recognize him in a heartbeat.

No the song is not about his parents. It was written by Al Bynum, and Roger Bowling. The strange coincidence. And no, the line isn’t “Four-hundred children”. It’s “Four hungry children”. If you listen closely when he is calling out the words when everybody sings the chorus with him, you can hear it more plainly. But don’t worry Britt, a lot of people apparently make that mistake. My uncle did. It’s a common mishearing.

I highly recommend the song "Ruby"... Kenny Rogers did cover this song, but it was originally released by Waylon Jennings... It was also later released by Mel Tillis, who was also the writer of the song too... One of the reasons Mel Tillis did not initially release it was because of his stuttering problem brought on by a case of malaria when he was a child, yet he had no stutter when he sang.... Mel was also the father of country singer/songwriter Pam Tillis... I suggest Mel's version of "Ruby" to start with, but Waylon and Kenny more then did the song justice, and are totally worth a listen... I suggest Mel not just because he wrote it, and because it is based on a true story of people Mel actually knew, but also because I don't think you have reacted to Mel yet...
@rowynnecrowley16895 ай бұрын
People who stutter don't stutter when they sing. Also when talking to animals.
@quixote6942 Жыл бұрын
Kenny started as a part of "the New Christy Minstrels" Before becoming Lead Singer (and Bassist) to Kenny Rogers and the First Edition. It was with them that he sang "Ruby, don't take your love to town" and "Just Dropped in (to see what my condition was in)"... BRITT BE AWARE: This was back before Kenny's hair went Silver, and for "Just Dropped in" I think you'll FLIP to see Kenny's Retro Glasses!

Everybody hears the lyric as "four hundred children..." the first time or two they hear "Lucille." As you'll discover when listening carefully, it's actually "four HUNGRY children...." As far as I've ever heard, this song's character 'Lucille' is not meant to be his mother...but there's probably a reason why he used her name (other than because it rhymes with 'field'.)

Huge hit, I used to think it was "400 children", too. Kenny Rogers went through a stretch where every single thing he touched turned to gold. He and Willie Nelson both did songs/albums that spawned movies. Kenny's was a lot more fun, and I think more widely seen, as it was a TV movie.

B - You're working your way through the catalog of Kenny's best songs, but there's one that's very sweet and will bring a tear to your eye -- "You Can't Make Old Friends." This is a duet by two professional soulmates: Kenny and Dolly Parton. He recorded it as his farewell to Dolly at the time he retired. The song runs about 4 minutes, but this video ( kzbin.info/www/bejne/mZmlf3Wwephoe6s ) includes intro and outro of the two of them sitting together reminiscing about the joy they experienced performing together for decades. After you hear this, it will become your new favorite Kenny/Dolly duet -- easily replacing "Islands in the Stream."
