And, as s theater kid, Britt, you really need to know Fosse and his work. Here is Bebe Neuwirth, who was in the Broadway revival of "Chicago", explaining a bit about Fosse and his style: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hX7CeqVsqMuders And here's the man himself, from a clip of "Kiss Me Kate". kzbin.info/www/bejne/sGG4d3qFqMaVgNE He's the smallest of the men, with the yellow hat. The others of this amazing company are: Ann Miller, the main female dancer, one of the great tap dancers of her era. Tommy Rall, the flying man! Bobby Van as the third male dancer, who doesn't get to strut his stuff here like the others get to. Carol Haney dancing with Fosse and Jeane Coyne dancing with Van.

It reminds you of Chicago as well because both shows were written by the team of Kander and Ebb. And yes - you should definitely watch the movie. It’s brilliant, if disturbing, as it chronicles the rise of Nazism in 1930s Berlin.

More importantly, this movie was, also, directed by Bob Fosse!! He had a distinctive visual style as a film director as well, which the director of the movie version of Chicago (Rob Marshall) very purposely incorporated into his film (so, Chicago is basically a more modern movie made to look like it was directed by Bob Fosse...). He did that because Fosse not only choreographed the original stage production of Chicago, he directed it AND co-wrote the script! So, Chicago just has Fosse-influence all over it.

Britt, you absolutely MUST treat yourself to an evening watching this movie. It's stellar. Liza is the daughter of Judy Garland, and she was every inch the performer that her mother was. She is one of the last Old School broadway Stars and a member of the small club of performers who have won an Oscar, a Golden Globe, a Tony, a Grammy, and an Emmy. She was also the protege of Bob Fosse, hence the beautiful lines in her presentation. Really, Britt, watch this movie, you will love it! Liza and Joel Grey together were Magic. Thanks for sharing this number. 🙂

I was a volunteer usher at the Chicago Theater in the 1980's when Liza Minelli performed there. Ushers could see the show in exchange for ushering. I remember her because she spoke to us ushers while we were cleaning up the aisles before the show and she was testing sound and lights. She greeted us and engaged us in conversation. "How are you?" "Is it too cold for you?" "Thanks for what you do." She also asked us to give our opinion of the sound and lighting. When one usher said the sound should be louder, she had the sound person up the volume. She was for real in sharp contrast to other performers (whom I will not name) whose talent I love but who were not as as real as Liza. One star, in fact, asked us to leave -- not caring that clean up would be more hectic for us so close to curtain.

She not only has Oscars but Golden Globes, Tony's , Grammy's and Emmys to name a few of her awards. She was and is a phenomenal performer. Her talent she comes by naturally from both her parents. Her first film appearance was at the age 3 in The Good Old Summertime at the end of the movie with her mother Judy Garland playing the daughter of her mother's character and the movie was directed by her father Vincent Minnelli.

I saw her perform this in Las Vegas in the seventies along with the tunes from New York, New York. She was absolutely amazing, when she finished the entire audience leapt to their feet with a standing ovation. What a performance it was, but my husband said when he saw her mother, Judy Garland on Broadway in New York, it was even more astounding. I feel very pleased to have witnessed her live. Now that's entertainment. Cabaret was a film set in the 1930s in Germany during the rise of Hitler. Wonderful musical, so worth watching.

Being a theater kid, you also ought to know Bob Fosse? This was his choreography, and yep, super iconic. I've seen a couple of stage productions of Cabaret, which differs significantly from the movie (which I also love, btw). My favorite is the 1998 Broadway production with Alan Cumming as the Master of Ceremonies -- which had a revival in 2014, with Alan reprising his role. Emma Stone had a turn at playing Sally Bowles and I thought she was fantastic as she finally got me to make an emotional connection to the character. In any case, your life will definitely be enriched if you check out the film and more of Liza Minnelli's songs, especially live, she is a true entertainer!

The clip is taken from the absolutely outstanding movie production of _Cabaret._ The story takes place in Weimar (between the end of WW1 and Hitler becoming Chancellor) and most of it happens on the stage of the Kit Kat Club where Sally Bowles is the headliner. All of the songs comment on the story of the love between Sally, Brian and Maximilian, and the political background of the rise of the Nazi party. Liza Minnelli gives an era-defining performance in the lead role, absolutely blasts through the stratosphere and into space. She won Best Actress that year, but if there'd been an award for the entire decade, she would probably have won that too. Both on stage, when she's performing the part of a performer, and outside, where she's just an American girl in Berlin. A word for Joel Grey, as the MC, who only appears inside the Club but as far as that goes he matches Liza point for point.

When her mother (Judy Garland) died, Judy owed many big stars a lot of money because for several years Judy had been financially broke and had borrowed large amounts of money from her star friends to support her lifestyle. Liza was only 23 when her mother died leaving behind Liza and her two younger siblings. When Judy died she owed money to friends in addition to owing the IRS over $4M in back taxes. Liza was told by the estate's attorney that the debt died with Judy. However, Liza refused to have her mother's legacy sullied by this and immediately went to work. One of the people Judy owed was Frank Sinatra. When Liza wouldn't allow him to forgive the debt, he hired Liza and for the next 9 years Liza worked alongside Frank Sinatra in addition to doing work independently. After 9 years she had finally paid off her mother's debts. I have the biggest amount of respect for Liza Minnelli.

Have you ever seen 1938 movie The Wizard of Oz? Starring a 16-year old Judy Garland as Dorothy? Lisa Minelli is Judy's daughter. Liza won the Academy Award for Best Actress for this role in Cabaret. At the 45th Academy Awards, the film won for *** Best Director (Fosse), Academy Award for *** Best Actress (Minnelli), *** Best Supporting Actor (Grey), *** Best Cinematography, *** Best Film Editing, *** Best Original Song Score and Adaptation, *** Best Art Direction, and *** Best Sound, holding the record for most Oscars earned by a film not honored for Best Picture. The German phrase "mein Herr" translates to "sir" in English. It can also mean "my lord," "my master," "mister," "monsieur," "sire," "m'lord," or "O Lord".

There was a book titled, "I Am a Camera," by Christopher Isherwood. It was a made into a straight play, and then a few years after that turned into the Broadway musical and called "Cabaret." From there, it became the movie with Liza Minelli. I think the only person to make the transition from the stage version to the movie was Joel Grey as the MC. "Mein Herr" literally means "my mister," or maybe casually, "fella." As others have pointed out, this was choreographed by Bob Fosse. Some of the things you spotted, like the turned-in feet and hunched shoulders, were among his signature moves. Check out "Steam Heat" from Pajama Game some time for a quintessential Fosse number.

Find Cabaret and see the entire film. Bob Fosse directed and did the choreography. He is known for his minimalist movement. The original of this was called I Am A Camera. Once you have seen this entire film, then go find All That Jazz, which is about Fosse and his choreography. The character who essentially plays him is not named Fosse, but it is a roman a clef, which means they change the name but everyone knows who the character is. He was married to Gwen Verdon. There is a TV mini-series called Fosse and Verdon. Find it, and see it. As a dancer, you need to know these people.

You have to watch Liza with a Z, her tv concert film, also directed and choreographed by Bob Fosse, who won the Triple Crown of directorial entertainment awards in 1973, the Oscar for Cabaret, the Emmy for Liza with a Z, and the Tony for Pippin. I grew up listening to the album for Liza with a Z, so singing along Liza has been part of my life since the 1970s. The song Maybe This Time from Cabaret finally got me cast in the chorus of my high school musical my junior year (my voice is average at best, but I know that song so well that I delivered it with sufficient oomph to get me a part).

I was a young teen when I saw this movie. I was absolutely blown away. I became obsessed with her Liza with a Z album, which was sooo different from my usual fare( I grew up in Nashville, went to high school with Lori Anne Crook, Waylon Jennings' road manager lived across the street so I was steeped in country!) Thank you for reminding this old woman of this, imma gonna go jump back down that rabbit hole!

She definitely inherited her mother's singing voice, if not, arguably, having an even better voice. She made her stage debut at the age of 17, and won her first Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical at the age of 19..... and the rest, as they say, is history. You really cannot go wrong reacting to anything done by Liza. One of the most powerful voices I have ever heard. At the age of 13 she performed a rendition of Over The Rainbow that almost equals her mother's..... by the time she was 20 she was in a class all her own. Just a beautiful voice and a terrific actress.

She’s the daughter of Judy Garland and director, Vincent Minnelli. This is the movie Cabaret based on the Broadway hit. Choreography by Bob Fosse. It’s supposed to be a sleazy club in Germany while Hitler is coming to power. And yes they are singing while dancing but since it’s a movie they are lip synching to a playback.

as a gay boy who loved all things theatre and film-seeing the film of CABARET on video at age 16 by myself in my living room in 1984-my life was CHANGED. my parents had seen it when it came out on the big screen in 1972. being only 5, I wasn't allowed to go with them. there were things in it that I "didn't need to see." So of course-someday-i HAD to see it. and then there was also the memory of a fun 1st grade teacher who had gone to see Liza onstage in Las Vegas, around that same time, and she wouldn't stop raving about Liza and talking about the show. (to 1st graders?! I was in heaven!). she even went so far as to start wearing big, black, oversized false eyelashes in tribute to liza. eyelashes that in no way suited a midwestern small town 1st grade classroom, but still served to thrill and inspire me. so with all of this "baggage" in tow-there I was one night. i was going to finally see CABARET. omg! WELL-the angels sang and the earth SHOOK. honestly, it was a biblical-level A.D./B.C. moment in my 16 year old gay boy life. B.C. - A.D. Before Cabaret vs. After Divinity-in reference to CABARET being a DIVINE piece of art-and also because I needed something that began with D-also a slight tip of the hat to the candy divinity-a specialty of the south and certain homes in the midwest where there is a grandmother or aunt who loves gossip, scandal, and sweets galore-who encouraged your, shall we say-"artistic" side. sometimes there is god so quickly. CABARET is a major piece of art. it is when Bob Fosse entered a new pantheon. Fosse won the Oscar for best director OVER Francis Ford Coppola for THE GODFATHER. this was MONUMENTAL. and proof of just how talented Fosse was. Liza entered a new pantheon. Liza won best actress. An honor denied her brilliant mother. This win positioned Liza as now a movie star, a broadway star, a big American star. even Joel Grey entered a new pantheon in his career. you must watch CABARET asap. it is a flawless mix of dazzle, flash, politics, history, sexiness, and style. it tells the story of the rise of the third reich in germany, and how the nazi's came to power, and the destruction they wrought. and it is all wrapped up in an incredible package of broadway razzle dazzle. CHICAGO is CHICAGO because of CABARET. and Bob Fosse is the master of all of these ceremonies. you will love CABARET. it is a thrilling film. please watch it, because you will love it and be knocked out by it. please watch CABARET and tell us what you think of the experience. because it is not simply a great film. it is an experience. CABARET was a culture moment. there is a reason why Liza in CABARET was one of Freddy Mercury's biggest inspiration. Freddy was devoted to Liza upon seeing CABARET. he spoke even of the purple ribbon in Liza's bowler as being a stroke of artistic genius. it changed Freddy too. while I am not Freddy Mercury-(DAMMIT! thanks a lot god or Mother Nature or anyone else involved! ) this film changed me. it changed my aesthetic about the power of art, and and about how a story is told. "Mein Herr" is a small h'ors d'oeuvre of deliciousness to entice you to the rest of the feast. and it is a feast. go eat! thanks for posting.

@@etc7070 I have been very lucky to have seen CABARET onstage several times. the production that came to broadway back in the late 90's with Alan Cumming, amazingly, I was in London when that production was first mounted at an incredible theatre in London called Donmar Warehouse. it seated about 200 people. we were at little tables, like a cabaret. Jane Horrocks was sally. Alan Cumming was incredible, and the last image was one of the most amazing things I'd ever seen. I later saw that production on broadway when it transferred with Jennifer Jason Leigh as sally. and I like her as an actress very much, but I didn't like that performance. and I thought-at least the night that I saw it-that the production had become a little too overblown. all the Kit Kat girls were doing too much showing us they were bombed out heroin addicts, Jennifer Jason Leigh was too internal and weird, Alan cumming had left, but his replacement was doing an imitation of him but not as strong. I still thought images and scenes in it were quite powerful. but I didn't find it as sharp or as exciting in NYC as it had been in London. I also was lucky enough to see the old Harold Prince broadway production when it came back to broadway in 1988. Alyson Reed was amazing as sally. I loved it. it is funny because it is so different from the film, it feels like almost a different show. and also very different from the sam Mendes production in London and nyc. I have loved all 3 in different ways. I am interested to see this new one on broadway. that is opening next month, I believe. CABARET couldn't be more timely. the u.s. needs to listen to what it is saying. I fear too many are dancing, yet fast asleep.

She went to the Performing Arts High School in New York for a while, but isn't classically trained in the normal sense of the word. That said, she's been performing properly since she was 17, and in bits and bobs throughout her childhood (her first film appearance was as a baby, thanks to her mother).

Mein Herr means My Lord, however, Herr has come to mean 'Mr.' in modern German. The Oscar winning film Cabaret was based on the Broadway musical of the same name, and that was based on Christopher Isherwood's autobiographical stories of his life in Berlin in the 1930s during the rise of the Nazis. Every one of Liza's tracks on the movie album is an iconic gem.
