Apparently Luke covered this song because he wanted to expose a new generation to a song that he felt had a message that was worth sharing and hoped that after hearing his cover people would go look at Tracy's original.

i cant raise my hand, i grew up in Amherst Virginia, a small town on the eastern slope of the Blue Ridge Mountains, we refer to it as the HOV (Heart Of Virginia), joined the Army out of high school to see the world, 8 years took me around it , ive been on every continent aside from the Antarctic, but my roots were stretched, then we had my daughter and i had to get out. i wanted her to grow up where i did. so back we came, bought a house went to work for a local stove manufacturer learned everything anyone could know about how woodstoves work, now i work from home helping people figure out issues with their stoves, play golf on weekends on the course i grew up on, fish the same creeks and rivers, my daughter grew up to become a nurse and has her own family now living her dream... i grew up lucky.

Fun fact about Luke combs, he used to actually perform in local bars and pizza places near my area when I was younger and before he got super famous but my sister used to see him perform while working. Super cool to see someone succeed so much from your own local area. Love Luke combs !!

I think he did a really good job with the song. You can see the respect he has for the song in that he didn't change the lyrics to fit a male singer. I prefer Tracy's version, but only because I feel like the story is more poignant from a female perspective. I know a lot of women who have tied themselves to a whole string of men who mooch off them, and who dream of a middle-class life they can never quite achieve. This song resonated with me in the original version and this one does to.

I’m getting better about it but I don’t usually like covers of songs that I already love and feel a connection to the song and artist . He really did a beautiful job with this. I will always have the original on a playlist but I will definitely add Luke’s cover on a playlist as well. So well done fantastic voice.

If you research this was a tribute to Tracy, this song meant something to him in his youth. This is my all time favorite song of all time, and he did it all the justice it deserves ❤️. Also now I have to go listen to Tracy sing it, because hands down you can’t replicate perfection no matter how good you are!

I really like this acoustic version! I haven't been overly impressed with his studio version because he didn't do anything unique with the song musically. He pretty much just did the Tracy Chapman version. This is good.

I don't know what's more ridiculous, the fact that people thought it was racist to cover this song or the fact that people thought this song was ONLY popular because Luke sang it. Its ALWAYS been a popular song and she won NUMEROUS AWARDS for it and had TONS of singles on the top charts back when she was around.

I also prefer Tracy’s version but his cover made $500,000 for Tracy and she deserves every dollar of it (and I’m happy that a new generation is discovering her music because of Luke’s cover:)
