Fade To Black is about how James was feeling after his guitar and amp that his mother (who passed away from cancer when James was young) had bought him was stolen along with other gear belonging to the band in it. James said he felt suicidal at the time cuz the guitar and amp meant the WORLD to him. He, instead, took his anguish out by writing this amazing work of art!

In a documentary James told about after the Ride The Lightning album came out and him going over to a girls apartment to pick her up for a date. He said up to that point he had no idea what effect their music was having on people and when he went there her younger sister was laying on the living room floor, I think he said with headphones, and she was listening to this song over and over again and he was blown away.

I love, love, love this song. Yes, the instrumentality is ridiculous but the lyrics are sick (you probably couldn't understand a lot of it in this performance). Every "first time listening to.." should not be a live version but the studio one. Live often modify an gives a "little distortion" of the pure sound and text.

Truth!!!check out the studio version,this is sped up quiet a bit in comparison. Plus the vocals ,as good as James is live here,are clearer on the studio version.but this is still fun to watch,they rocked live back in the 90's and it's nice to see them still rocking out in 2018!!🤘🤘🤘😃✌

Fade to black is one of those songs that you should listen to the studio version first. Kirk hasn't played the solo correctly live since 1985..

You should listen to some 1986 performances, Kirk plays the solo perfectly. He also played the solo well in Seattle 89, only with a lot of wah added.

@@juanprc10 I have listened and he has played it decently well in '86, but he hasn't played it correct since 1985. Also the 89 seattle version is just like any other 89 gig, just professionally filmed.. and no, it doesn't come even "close" to the studio version.

Great performance by the all mighty Metallica but in this one (as they’ve been doing in the last years) the solo is improvised for the most part and, even if it wasn’t a bad solo as a whole, it’s not even close to the original one. I like their creativity and changing a bit the solos to not burning them out but there are a few like this one that IMO should be performed as they were written

You really just need to watch seattle 89 That was prime metallica. The sound and energy is unlike any other live performance. Some may disagree but kirk is not what he use to be and you can hear it in the last solo here. Hes improvising a lot steering away from the original solo disguising a lot behind a wah pedal. And its not clean.
