The opening a cappella harmonies are all Freddie’s multitracked vocals. The operatic section choral effect is achieved using 180 overdubs. The song took three weeks to record. “Inside the Rhapsody” is an interesting, short documentary about the recording and filming of BoRhap. In 1987, Freddie co-wrote and recorded, with internationally famous opera singer, Montserrat Cabelle, the Opera album "Barcelona". The title song was the anthem for the 1992 Olympic games in Barcelona (seven months after Freddie's death.) You missed the gong at the end! RIP Freddie & Montsy

Since you’re a guitar guy, some interesting trivia about Brian‘s guitar is that when he was 16 years old, he and his father built it. He calls it the red special and it was built with a piece of wood from over the fireplace and his mother‘s knittingneedle along with other things and it’s a one of a kind obviously and he plays it with a British six pence coin as a pick

@@TheAJCReactsThere are dedicated videos about the Red Special. And it's very special indeed, in can make sounds that no other guitar can make. In fact Bohemian Rapsody uses every single option that the Red Special provides. This is clearly heard when you hear people do covers of his solo section as it never sounds quite right. This has nothing to do with any lack of skill, but it's the guitar itself that's lacking. Their had been a series of authorised replicas Red Specials too, and there are a whole lot of videos about that as well.

The Red Special also has her own bodyguard when out. I believe it's on the insistence of the insurance company. The rumour is she is insured for £1Billion. As a one off masterpiece, she's worth it. Brian May also uses The Deaky Amp, invented by John Deacon, the bassist and electrical engineer. John found an old radio in a skip one day and made it into a one of a kind amp to work with the Red Special. In the early 2000s they gave companies permission to study the amp to replicate it. At one point it meant taking it apart to find out just how it worked. I believe there were a few hundred made to the specs.

Great reaction. Love how you appreciate these guys. Just so you know you missed the gong at the end. Don’t end the video early because you may miss something with these guys. This track is often rated as the best song ever. The video was groundbreaking for its time and revolutionized the way videos were made and used paving the way for tv channels like MTV. It took 4 hours to make. The beginning part was just Freddie on harmonies but Brian and Roger (maybe John) were on the rest. Roger the drummer is the one hitting the high notes. They had 180 overdubs and had to stop because the tape was getting too thin. It took them 8 weeks and 4 studios just to record the operatic part.

Iconic song with a huge number of covers but Queen's version is still the best one. The intro acapella is just Freddie multi-tracked to create the sound of several singers harmonizing. There are places on this song with 180 multi-tracks of three voices (Fred, Brian and Roger) to create the sound of a 100 person choir. This was all accomplished on 24 track tape. You stopped a moment too soon and missed the gong smash at the end of the song. It gives such a finality to the whole thing. Thank you for your reaction.

A groundbreaking masterpiece. Freddie had a vision, and everyone did their part, but it was all in his head and the rest of the band did in their genius ways what he said, it was all put together over and over until the reel to reel tape was see through, parts they recorded over and over, until it was perfect…it was a huge gamble that paid off. Big story about that…you’ll find out in time. Great reaction!!

👏👏👏 “I remember Freddie coming in with loads of bits of paper from his dad’s work, like Post-it notes, and pounding on the piano,” May said in 2008. “He played the piano like most people play the drums. And this song he had was full of gaps where he explained that something operatic would happen here and so on. He’d worked out the harmonies in his head.”

Thank you! Loved your reaction. It’s my favorite song of all time since its release in 1975. BTW, the first section before the piano & you see Freddie playing it was all Freddie harmonizing with himself, though they show all 4 singing it. The operatic part is all of them, that high falsetto is the drummers, Roger. Back in 1975, this totally broke the mold, and is Freddie’s masterpiece. Enjoy!

When this came out in the UK in 1975, I was 15. It entered the charts at number 9, then the following week hit number 1 and stayed there for 9 weeks over Christmas 75 into January 76. I thought they'd never have another song after this because they couldn't beat it but they had many many more. When Freddie died, it went back to number 1 for six weeks.

Being a guitar guy yourself you may enjoy some of these performances by Brian: Queen - Brighton Rock Solo. Should be 9 minutes 11 seconds long. I Want It All official video. Bijou. This song is done by Freddie and Brian in an hour and done “inside out” whereby the instrumental is where the lyrics usually are and the lyric where the guitar solo usually is. In my opinion Brian’s best work.

@ Brian having a PhD in astrophysics he had a very scientific mind and enjoyed pushing the envelope with what his guitar could do. When he and his father made the guitar he knew while making it that he wanted it to sound different. In the Brighton Rock video he was experimenting with delays and it is an awesome performance.

There are only a small handful of rock artists who have been deemed to have legendary status in music , and Queen is on the short list with Led Zeppelin , and a few others. Their music has influenced SO MANY other genres , and artists from Garth brooks, to MC Hammer, to Lady GaGa. And Many Many others too numerous to mention. In Fact Lady GaGa got her name from one of Queens songs " Radio GaGa" which was played in the live Aid Video. Queen opened the live Aid show with THIS song Bohemian Rhapsody. Or at least an excerpt from it. This song is considered the greatest Rock /Pop song of all time. Many bands even today strive for the class, style, and perfection that Queen brought to the music scene , but to this day none have mastered what they were capable of. Virtuoso musicians who found a way to meld classic music styles and techniques with Pop , Rock , Soul and musical theater so seamlessly as to make it magical ! RIP Freddie . There will likely NEVER again be anyone like you .

YES Finally! I am going to watch and comment! OH, AJC, you didn't complete the entire song, you stopped the video seconds too soon! You missed it! This song ends with Roger hitting the big gong at the end, otherwise another excellent reaction! This is the entire song I told you about after you watched the Live Aid abbreviated version of Bohemian Rhapsody, Freddie was older as well at Live Aid as the rest of the Queen band members. According to Freddie in some interviews, he mentioned something along these words I will be paraphrasing, that Bohemian Rhapsody is three unfinished songs he put them together and his other bandmates helped put it all together. Yes, in the 1970s, most if not all band members wore their hair long. If I had to guess, Freddie may have been about 38 years old, perhaps going on 39 I think during the Live Aid performance, hair styles were getting shorter by then. I am so happy you were amazed by the full version of Bohemian Rhapsody. it is definitely considered one of Queens best masterpieces they ever created! Looking forward to more! Peace! ☮

Bohemian Rhapsody was 4 songs he was working on. He decided to put them all together & this masterpiece was born. I was 10yrs old when this was released & instantly became a fan. I'm now 60 & when I hear this it's like I'm hearing it for the first time. Queens record company didnt want it released as it was too long in their opinion. Freddie told them that the song was to played in its entirety or not at all. His friend & DJ Kenny Everett played it on the radio multiple times & it became an instant hit! They never looked back.....Queen was well and truly born! Please try & not pause any Queen song.....we don't like it.....especially Bohemian Rhapsody as the beauty is listening to the entire song! Great reaction tho 😊

Also react to White Queen live at Hammersmith Odeon 1975. This performance is so ethereal between the piano and guitar. Some info on the song so it makes sense. Brian wrote this song while in college about a girl in his Biology class that he had a crush on but was too shy to talk to. When he finally got the nerve she was already dating someone else…..it ends as it began. Brian uses 2 guitars on this one. His Red special and then during the bridge he uses his Hallfredh guitar that he changed himself. He changed the bridge and added some fret wire before the bridge saddle to make it sound like a sitar.

Your journey down the Queen path cannot be complete without Bohemian Rhapsody. In fact, your journey into great MUSIC of the past cannot be complete without Bohemian Rhapsody! Bohemian Rhapsody, was released in 1975 on the album "A Night at the Opera" which gives a hint as to the musical genre. Freddie Mercury was a huge fan of opera so this song was written as an operatic suite consisting of five distinct parts: an acapella intro, a ballad segment, an operatic passage, a hard rock section, and a reflective coda. Generally it is classified as rock-and-roll, but specifically as a "rock opera" and "progressive rock." Truth is, labeling any Queen song, or Queen the band, is next to impossible! "Bohemian" describes an unconventional, artistic style with freedom and individuality as key elements. "Rhapsody" in musical composition refers to a single work comprised of episodic, diverse pieces arranged into a free-flowing structure designed to heighten emotions. This song came to be because Freddie had pieces of songs he never completed, so he put them together, each section totally different yet masterfully blended into a truly epic masterpiece. It is the band's magnum opus, and is unanimously considered one of the best songs ever written. As for the meaning of Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody", Freddie was purposefully vague. As with most of the greatest songs, the lyrics are written to be poetic and mysterious. Are they literal or figurative? As separate pieces initially, should the song have a singular meaning? Who knows! The meaning is open to interpretation for each listener to decide, based on how the music and lyrics touched them. You will read comments claiming the song's meaning, but the fact is, the entire band has never stating a specific meaning and has been firm that there isn't one, or if Freddie DID have a specific interpretation, he never shared it. Any assertion of the meaning pertaining to Freddie's sexuality are speculative and pushed by certain groups who WANT that to be the meaning. Those people insist one’s sexual preference is the main, if not the only, defining factor to everything one does in life, and therefore Freddie’s artistic talent is secondary and subjective to who he found attractive. This is ludicrous and insulting to one of the greatest musical geniuses of all time.

This is 1975 Freddie Mercury. 😂 This song blew all our minds back then. I was 13/14 when this came out and we'd never heard anything like it...especially since most songs on the radio were kept within a 3-4 minute time frame back then. This was the first music promo video and was part of the inspiration to create a show that was music video clips. That idea was from Mike Nesmith of The Monkees. He later sold the premise and it became MTV in 1981. Before that any music "videos" were from clips from live performances, movies or TV shows.

Great reaction! I'm not sure if you noticed, but this was the first song they performed at Live Aid (just the first part, before the operatic section). In terms of absolute biggest hits, Queen are also behind Another One Bites the Dust (which I'm sure you've heard - I'd recommend the official video!), You're My Best Friend, I Want It All, Killer Queen, Don't Stop Me Now, Fat Bottomed Girls, even the Flash (ahh ahh!) Theme song you may have heard during Blades of Glory, haha. But they had an extensive catalog: 15 studio albums and 21 years together until Freddie passed away in November 1991 from AIDS. He was only 45. They made music until the very end. My personal favorite is "The Show Must Go On" - there's no live version, as Freddie was much too sick at that point (he could barely stand, and had to sing sitting down), but the lyrics are all about continuing to put on a show despite knowing he didn't have long left. Despite rumors, the audience didn't know of his diagnosis at the time; he didn't announce it officially until the day before he died. The press were horrible and homophobic to him throughout much of his career, especially at the end, but his legacy lives on and theirs certainly doesn't.
