I heard from some podcast, I don't remember which one, but the opening for Paranoia Agent was a conscious choice made by the creator to wake people up since the show was aired late in the evening/night in Japan. It strangely fits very well with the story of the anime. :) - Another overlooked anime is Mononoke, NOT Princess Mononoke. Maybe because it's a bit more "artsy" in it's style. It's about a medicine man (immortal) who's travelling through Japan in different eras, solving mysteries and exorcizing spirits & demons. Highly recommend! - FLCL (Fooly Cooly or Furi Kuri) is another overlooked anime, just because it's weird and might be hard to grasp for the mainstream audience. It's a comedy with slightly dark undertones, filled with creativity. And the soundtrack is just great. -This is not an anime, but another underrated animation series is Aeon Flux. It was aired on MTV & I remember watching it as a child/early teen and just being mesmerized by the art style.

Its a bit tricky trying to explain Paranoia agent. Its a psychological experience. You think its horror at first but it's not. Its very interesting to be honest. It's like observing a persons psyche and how their minds are twisted and manipulated with from the elements of fear, anxiety and regret.
@KDGamma9 ай бұрын
Fun fact: The reason why the Paranoia Agent op is so loud and cheery is used to air around midnight, when people are usually exhausted. So they made a bombastic opening so it could wake people up. Also, I highly recommend Paranoia Agent. It's pretty hard to explain what it's about because a lot of the plot is spoilers but the most I can say is that it's a psychological mystery thriller about a mysterious roller-skating boy named Shounen Bat going around the city and attacking people with his signature golden bat, and the police are trying to find out the truth behind these attacks. Its starts pretty normal, but gets very surreal halfway through. I'd definitely call it a cult classic, but its still something I'd say you should watch if you want to.

These aren't hidden gems they're more like cult classics. Utena is one of the most influential anime of all time and a LOT of the staff involved were (and still are) some of the best in the industry. Mushishi is one of the GOATs of the Iyashikei genre (basically slice of life chill shows) and the director was one of the people involved with Utena. Paranoia Agent is the only show that Satoshi Kon (the director of Tokyo Godfathers, Paprika, Millenium Actress and Perfect Blue) ever directed before he passed away. Serial Experiments Lain also was produced by some of the most talented creators in the industry and managed to basically predict how social media was going to turn out back in like 1998. All 4 shows are really good but also very very weird in their own way. They're also all acquired tastes and it's basically impossible to predict whether someone will enjoy them or hate them. Except maybe Mushishi, that one's chill. If you want more shows in the same vain as these ones: Kino's Journey (both 2003 and 2017). The 2003 version was directed by the director of Serial Experiments Lain. Gunbuster. This is the precursor to Neon Genesis Evangelion. FLCL. Haibane Renmei. Aria the Animation. Lupin III. Planetes. Same creator as Vinland Saga.

All of these shows are super iconic for people who were anime fans at the time they were relevant, at least one of those will have been on almost every single top 9 grid on /a/ 12 years ago. Utena is THE godmother of shojo anime, of yuri anime, of the modern dark magical girl genre, regularly featured on lists of the best and most influential anime of all time, and just generally spawned dozens of very well respected series in every genre and even western cartoons. Hell, Madoka itself clearly took influence from it. Even to this day you'll see Utena references in shows constantly, it's pretty much the Evangelion of shojo. It's only hidden for zoomers and shounen kids.

Hell, Paranoia Agent used to air on US TV alongside stuff like Fullmetal Alchemist and Cowboy Bebop, so most people who were into anime at the time had seen it. The younger generation... they just don't really go back and watch stuff before their time often. And the few they do are usually from the tail end of the 00s at the latest. Although it was pretty funny to see Madoka randomly make a comeback with reactors in 2023 and a bunch of new generation anime fans legitimately hadn't heard of it.

I really hope you get to check out Revolutionary Girl Utena sometime. here's a bit of information on the plot without spoilers: the story begins with Utena Tenjou, our main character, as she begins going to school at Ohtori academy. she meets a girl, Anthy Himemiya, who is known amongst the students, as the Rose Bride. this means that the student council, (denoted by the rose rings they wear), take part in sword duels to determine who will obtain Anthy as their bride. but the Rose Bride, as a title, doesn't necessarily carry the implications of a traditional engagement or marriage. instead, the Rose Bride is simply subservient to whoever has won her most recently. Utena takes issue with this treatment of Anthy, and decides to intervene and protect her. however, by defending her, Utena wins the Rose Bride for herself by accident. the rest of the show follows, examining the mysteries of what goes on at Ohtori academy, why there's a system like this at all, and what it's true purpose is. the whole thing is steeped in symbolism and surrealism, as truths are revealed, dark and strange, about this place.

Mushishi is one of my top 5 series ever watched, i would describe it as tranquil, haunting and beautiful. Its about a wandering medicine man helping people with a supernatural life form called Mushi, which translates to bugs. Its kind of a balance of mushi just trying to exsist while they also cause trouble, people die, go insane, loose everything and are affected by these mushi for better or worse. This show teaches you that sometimes you just cant save people, this show is the definition of life happens and you now have to learn to live with it, because life goes on no matter what you do.
@gaborkrausz54029 ай бұрын
I've always had an idea about this anime that I've never seen anyone mention, is how a lot of these mushi's doings somewhat represent traumas that the everyday people can have, and how a lot of times, getting rid of these mushis also relate to the real life solution of the traumas. Like in the 2nd episode, when the father isolated himself and her daughter from the village, as the mom died from the sea, got trauma, and the daughter became mute. The solution was to open up to the village when a dangerous event happened in the sea (I haven't seen it in years, but as far as I remember something with the algae releasing some toxic chemicals, probably what killed the mom) and help. After this, the daughter's muteness went away...

okay, I feel the need to explain Revolutionary Girl Utena, just in case this is a comment of mine that gets seen. that show is phenomenal, but it's so so SO weird. in the best way. it starts out as a basic school anime... there's a new girl, Utena, and she accidentally gets in the middle of this ritualistic thing that the student council does at her new school, where they sword fight in duels which determine who wins the hand of the coveted Rose Bride, otherwise known as Utena's classmate, Anthy Himemiya. Utena takes issue with this practice, and decides to put herself between Anthy, and anyone who would try to win and control her in this way. but all of this is much more complicated than it seems. that's the premise on the surface, but already, the premise screams that something in this story doesn't work the way reality typically does. and in fact, this whole story eventually starts ticking on surrealist dream logic. a good half the content of the show is conveyed through symbolism and metaphor, and even though the first arc is fairly formulaic, with each member of the student council getting a spotlight episode or two before their sword duel, there's plenty more to glean from what we're being shown, than what we're being told. the second arc is probably the most confusing by a literal reading... that's when the kid gloves come off, and the show demands that you start looking at it's contents in terms of allusions, and allegory, more even than what you're literally seeing. the narrative has an entire substructure that you probably won't understand fully after the first time you see it. this show is fascinating though, so it holds up beautifully to multiple rewatches. and then everything that comes after that is like taking the story, turning it sideways, and learning that there were facets to a thing you thought was a flat object. literally, the first arc introduces structure just so the rest of the story can break, critique, and question that structure. and all the while, the show is aesthetically gorgeous. the ominous surrealist magical elements are dialed up to eleven, and all of the characters become peak interesting. also, if you ever watch it (and my god, you absolutely should) then I guarantee the movie will still manage to blindside you, even after everything that the show does... and the show does a LOT already.

It’s hard to explain what makes the show so good to me and many others without going into spoilers so I’ll just say that the story ends up going into some very unexpected, and mind-bending territories. It’s one that certainly offers quite a bit in terms of discussion haha. I have yet to see the first two, but Serial Experiments Lain is very good! Revolutionary Girl Utena isn’t so much about the story as it is about the delivering of the story. It exploited the traditional mecanisms of anime into an art form. It is an old anime, but it is worthwhile to anyone passionate about this medium. Mushishi is my absolute favorite anime series of all time. Period. It’s not action packed or busy like a shonen. It’s completely on the other side of the spectrum, haunting and marvellous.

We had the #Lain20 all the way until #lain25, and the #TTL I guess they are hidden to new anime fans, either way, I love good animes getting some love.
@dormir20729 ай бұрын
I think they only count as "hidden" here because the way the majority votes on this channel always puts the focus so much on modern anime, and they especially gas up new releases super hard, so basically any older anime becomes hidden.
@caladbolg7779 ай бұрын
I'd argue none of them are truly hidden gems since Paranoia Agent is tied to Satoshi Kon and it was on tv outside of Japan. I'd argue something like Haibane Renmei and Now and Then, Here and There are truly hidden gems. Also, while Rurouni Kenshin is super popular, I think the Studio Deen prequel OVA (Trust and Betrayal) is a hidden gem as well. I feel like not many people know about it and yet it's one of the best anime ever made (like in terms of amazing music, disney level motion animation, story, direction, characters, etc).

It’s freaky but so enticing. They even made 1 whole episode out of rotoscope technology, which makes it even more freaky but cool. & each post credit scene is cool because of the dementia parables.

Oh my God! It's HAPPENING!! Finally I can stop asking about Serial Experiment Lain! And there's a part 2?! Oh glorious day! If part 2 has Gunslinger Girl, my smile might hurt. As for my most underrated anime, the one that I KNOW no one is really going to ever upvote to be considered is Hare+Guu's. No one I know personally has heard of it unless it was because of me. And one of the only reasons it might be semi-recognizable to others is because one of its openings was used for parody videos in early youtube. It was my favorite comedy anime as a teenager and has amazing openings and endings, but I've made peace with the fact that it's never going to be top voted.

The BoA used in Serial Experiments Lain is NOT the BoA you think it is. This is the British band BoA and their song 'Duvet' from the album 'Race of a Thousand Camels'. It is NOT the Korean singer Boa you're more likely familiar with.
@VertexTuner9 ай бұрын
BoA (British band) is typically a 3-4 member group originally formed in 1993 in London, with Steve (Guitar) and Jasmine (Vocals) Rodgers, siblings who started the band after following their father around and even supporting his band in their early career. Their father is Paul Rodgers, famous for the groups Free (Best known song is 'All Right Now') and Bad Company. They're also ethnically half-Japanese on their mothers side, which may have helped with Polystar (their publisher at the time) getting the track used on the anime Serial Experiments Lain.
@OmniscientlyMe9 ай бұрын
You think the British guy is less familiar with a British band than a Korean singer? Have you thought this through?
@VertexTuner9 ай бұрын
@@OmniscientlyMe In previous videos, most concerning Fairy Tale, he gushes about BoA, but that's the K-Pop singer not the underground alternative rock band BoA. BoA, the British band, has a larger following in Japan and barely any presence in the UK at all, closest they have to a music video is the Lain opening. So as a fellow brit, I think I've got a handle on him not knowing the difference. They never charted in the UK either and I only learned of their existence, like so many English speaking fans did, thanks to watching Lain back in 1999/early 2000's.

Lain is one of the deepest, darkest, most well-written pieces of literary narrative created in the past 100 years. It predicted the future of the internet and society twenty years ago. It's absolutely breathtaking. It's also VERY VERY hard to understand due to the heavy-handed use of metaphor and symbolism. It's about a girl who discovers "The Wired"/The Internet, and goes on to essentially explore what SHE is in relation to real life and the internet. Paranoia Agent is great. It’s a psychological mystery revolving around a kid with a golden bat. The anime itself is fairly fun and more or less a parody of a specific genre (it'll be blatant what genre it is just by watching the openings). Would even recommend it as a potential future anime to swap to once one of your shorter anime ends as it's only 24 to 26 episodes long so it'll fill that slot easily (episode 1 in particular will have you laughing your ass off in just the first few minutes, though it does focus a bit on some psychological aspects you'd be surprised to see in parody anime).

Paranoia Agent AND Serial Experiments Lain in one video! I'm so ecstatic! These are two of my favorites, and I can absolutely give a brief summary of both plots without spoiling anything outside of the inciting incidents in the first episodes. Serial Experiments Lain was actually a suggestion I made last week for a new reaction, so I'll start with that one. Unfortunately, it's hard to really explain what it's about, because it's one of those mindfuck anime that even after watching it several times, fans still debate about what actually happened in the show. But I'll do my best to explain the basic premise. Lain is a technologically stunted girl who knows almost nothing about computers and the internet. At the start of the show, one of her classmates dies tragically. However, after her death, Lain receives an e-mail from her with a simple statement "I'm not dead. I'm living free in The Wired." The Wired is this world's version of the internet. What follows in the series is us watching Lain get more and more involved with the internet as she delves deeper into the mysteries of The Wired and what it has to do with her friend's death. Almost every episode has M. Night Shyamalan-esque twists and turns in this cyberpunk psychological thriller. It's confusing as hell, but a wild ride throughout. Now for Paranoia Agent. I actually didn't recommend this one because I didn't think you'd enjoy some of the content, but if you can handle some disturbing material, it is a genuinely good show. Trigger warning though, some of the prevailing themes in the show deal with abuse and s*xual *ssault, so keep that in mind. As for the summary... Paranoia Agent focuses on numerous characters, each with their own story, but each story subtly linked to the others. The "main character", if you can call her that, is Tsukiko Sagi, a famous cartoonist known all over Japan for her hit character, "Maromi". One night on her way home from work, she's attacked in a parking lot. While being interviewed in the hospital, she tells police that her attacker was a young boy in roller blades, his face hidden behind a baseball cap, and wielding a metal bat. Tales of this boy, nicknamed "Little Slugger" (Or "Shounen Bat" if you watch the subs instead of the English dub. Both are good, but I first watched the dub, and it's what I prefer for this show.) spread like wildfire as more and more attacks are reported. Tensions rise as Little Slugger gains notoriety, and soon the entire country starts to fall into chaos. This show deals with heavy themes of mass hysteria, rumors, lies, trauma, and how these things can spread through and crumble a society like a plague. It is a very dark show, with story telling elements just as crazy as the people these stories are about. It's a hard show to recommend, but if you can handle very tough, real life issues, and enjoy psychological thrillers and crime mysteries, it's very much a good watch. I hope we see more stuff like this.
