Fun fact! Turner is widely regarded in the literary community as one of the greatest lyricists of his generation. Previous 'Poet Laureate' (a title essentially referring to the 'head poet' in the UK) Simon Armitage said "of all those writing lyrics today, Turner is among the most poetic. His use of internal rhyme exists to be admired and envied. And where some songwriters are never able to get beyond the drama of their own lives and diaries, Turner is more than capable of sidestepping his own experience and producing telling little mini-dramas populated by keenly observed characters". (2008) While current Poet Laureate Carol Ann Duffy said, after their third album, "the Arctic Monkeys write poems, they are great lyric writers.” (2010) As a poet and English teacher myself I also regard Turner as nothing short of a genius.

In a British Hackney taxi (or cab) there is a red light on the inside of the passenger door that turns on if the door is locked. Sometimes there is a sign beside it saying "red light indicates doors are secured". The song is about a taxi ride on a night out - it starts with them wondering if the taxi will take 6 passengers. If not, they'll have to get two (taxis).

And I think if all you guys had heard the album back in 2006 and were the same age as you are now there would have been more 9 or 10s. Just a few things: 1) I've owned all the Arctic Monkeys albums on CD and honestly seems like streaming has compressed it a LOT because the bass lines were definitely much more prominent and the recordings were crisp. 2) definitely check out the B Sides from the 1st few albums at least cos they're 1 of the best B Sides bands out there. Some great tunes. 3) definitely listen to From The Ritz To The Rubble again because yoh missed the 1st 2 lines and missed the whole set up for the story on the song 😂 Look forward to going through more of your content guys.

Music is about feel and you normally feel a certain way or you don’t and that’s fine. For example I’m not sure how you ryan could say view from the afternoon is more energetic than still take you home but if that’s what it feels like to you then who am i to tell you you’re wrong. But I’ve got to say I think you missed the point with some of it, which probably isn’t too surprising and isn’t your fault given it’s was a young British band making an album about a night out in Britain. It makes sense for example that you don’t immediately get the references to the red lights in taxis. But It’s not supposed to be heavily produced with clear crisp tones, it’s supposed to capture the feeling of sh*tty clubs, terrible speakers, rainy nights and just having fun. And for a major British audience it achieved that. I do get, however that missing those little details through no fault of your own could definitely lessen the album as it would be missing the little flourishes and narratives that tie it together.

you guys defo need to listen to humbug! and cole is my new no1 op second edit: the reason their debut is so different to any other album is because they all have differen't genres, their debut being british rock and garage , their second being a little bit of their first but still introducing new instruments and vocal performances from the band. completely shifting with humbug being alot more dark, heavy , and psychedelic. suck it and see being lighter pop rock which is the same as AM, the two new ones being jazz, lofi , and lounge inspired. they didn't sell out! they just changed genres and are an amazing example of a band not afraid to take risks and do what they want! (this was very incoherent and yap, sorry!)

This is a perfect encapsulation of anyone 16 to 25 in the U.K. in 2006. They are describing all they knew at the time going out getting pissed on nights out getting in fights, pulling women getting thrown out of bars and waking up the next morning regretting what you’ve said and done. The references hit hard with that generation at the time.
@coletain562610 күн бұрын
one thing that americans don't get is that music doesn't have to be overproduced. the fact that there's not a lot of distortion on most of the solos is what makes it really rough and raw. distortion is heavier, that's for sure, BUT the fuzziness of it often smoothens the overall soundscape and imo makes it way less tight and tense, which is what they're going for here, they're not a grunge or hard rock band from the 90's for god's sake !! you won't ever hear one single band in the uk using as much distortion as american bands
@3idiotstalking1005 күн бұрын

I was in my early 20s when this came out and it encapsulated the British young person's night out perfectly. A solid 10/10 in my eyes. So for a different generation of young Americans to still view the album favourably whilst not understanding the nuances that only a British person can is high praise indeed. I find myself agreeing with Cole though - what happened to them?! If you think AM is mid - and it is - what comes after is even worse. I love to see bands try new things but their later stuff bores me to death. Favourite Worst Nightmare is good as well but it dips after that.

There is some super rare presses on vinyl they put out pre album signing. These 3 sitting in a rooms without a clue of the bands impact on music. Also it’s a Sheffield accent. Also sun goes down was released Jan 2006 . the Ipswich murders took place between oct-dec 06. Just starting the video but I had to pause for a second…AM is DEFINITELY NOT garage rock lmao. Some of the songs on it aren’t even rock at all. I wouldn’t say any of their albums are garage rock honestly, but this is the closest to it. Honestly, I don’t really _like_ AM except for two songs. I don’t really _like_ any of the albums after their second album (which came out a year after this one and they had already written songs for both albums before either was released). But I do actually think AM is more _interesting_ than this one. It sounds very mainstream, but if you listen closely enough, there are a lot of brilliant ideas and executions and general songwriting skill in it. And they swap genres around throughout the album. This album is fairly one-note if I’m being honest. Still love it a lot more though.

The talking over songs and getting distracted from the finer details is just my biggest pet peeve on the planet lol. When the Sun Goes Down is a 10 for me, too. I think you guys will enjoy Favourite Worst Nightmare a lot, similar energy, less punk sound but way more interesting songwriting and cooler vibe. Why haven’t Noah and Cole wrote any music? They “know” so much!

wild statement, considering what they rated this album

This guy Cole is one of the most cringe people I’ve ever seen on KZbin. Absolutely adores his own opinion. Stinks of two lads in their early 20s who think they’ve risen above others in terms of musical knowledge (when in fact they’re saying so many things just completely factually incorrect). Noah thinks there’s only one type of music and just wants to hear it, but apart from the lack of enthusiasm seems like a decent bloke. Ryan is good vibes even if he seems clueless to half the lyrics 😂

Their second album is like this but better and then their 2009 album Humbug is their best before they went too American

@@3idiotstalking100 Ah okay well Humbug is very different they made it with Josh Homme from Queens of the stoneage. so it has a desert rock feel to it.

Lyrically you will only appreciate Alex Turner if you’ve actually left your house. You need a personality to relate to the storytelling. Something the two boys up top just don’t have. Honestly no understanding of music if you would call AM bland.

whats interesting to me about this reaction is i hate arctic monkeys and this is one of my favorite albums of all time and my interpretation of ur guys' oerspectives is that ryan is too starry-eyed about the albums charisma while noah and cole want more distortion and drive to communucate rawness and funnily enough i think what u guys actuallynwant is a more produced album 😭 these guitar tones all lend themselves to the very bouncy grooves and this sound is a product of raw recording . its fair to wish you had more texture but think distortion isnt necessarily always the way to do that just cuz its punchy garage rock . i tjink ryans suggestion of turning up the bass would have honestly been more effective in achieving what u guys were wanting more of . but who knows maybe by tje end of tjis video u guys catch that they actually do use a diverse range of tones more tastefully than youd expect .

alternativrly if ur looking for a genuinely bigger and hazier sound listen to humbug . a good amount of it is turbo mid and a few aee some of their best songs but its definitely Dirtier and more hypnotic . honestly i prefer the sound profile of humbug over the debut but the debut just got that sauce idk its Cute edit: just wanted tonsay jewellers hands is their most adventerous song and frankly i think they stuck the landing Pretty Good ...its my favorite arctic monkeys song outside of wpsia

banger feedback comment! I would have loved to heard more bass power in this one given how raw it was!
