This is a tough song to react to, I think you did good nonetheless. The truth is you actually need to understand French to catch the beauty in those verses, because musically it's minimalist at best. Think of it like a Bob Dylan song, the core subject of the song would survive a translation but not the poetry. Brel was a popular poet from Belgium, someone the masses could relate to, and with Piaf, Brassens and Aznavour, perhaps one of the most consequential francophone singer to ever live. I think you were very wise to react to 80s or even 90s French singers, they were heavily influenced by American culture and the poetry slowly died in those years. However, reacting to Brel or even Gainsbourg will require a good command of the French language and for Gainsbourg a decent grasp of French/British/American literature (Bowels, Poe etc.). To give you a good example of the issue at hand at one point in this song Brel says "le rouge et le noir ne s'épousent-ils pas?" which is (horribly) translated "Don't black and red blend together", the translator decided to switch the colours, instead of red and black he/she writes black and red and this tiny mistake ruins the verse. The Red and the Black is a novel by Stendhal that all French schoolboys and girls study, a tragic love story that fits the song perfectly but that reference is lost in translation.
@jean-francoisribauville90653 жыл бұрын
Stendhal has nothing to do with this. You have to take de verse entirely: "Et quand vient le soir Pour qu'un ciel flamboie Le rouge et le noir Ne s'épousent-ils pas ?" Red and black are the colors of the sky in the evening, just before the night. They marry together like a man and a woman.
@valerieh843 жыл бұрын
Hello my friend, as a translator, I feel compelled to stand up for my colleagues here. Switching the colours red and black in the English version is not a mistake, it simply sounds a lot better. Every worthy translation of this text which I have seen will do it. You see, our job is not only to convey meaning but also the aesthetics of the text in the best way our target language will allow. We wouldn’t want to give the impression that Jacques Brel writes poorly! So we make certain choices and here, we choose style over certain cultural references that will most likely be lost on the audience. If needs be, we can add translators notes to our work, which may or may not be published depending on the support. But I am pretty sure that they are not lost on the translators 😉 PS: love how KZbin turned Pauwels into ‘bowels’, I think he would love it!
@warrenpeece96243 жыл бұрын
@@jean-francoisribauville9065 While I agree about your view on the meaning, "Le rouge et le noir" obviously pertain to Stendhal's masterpiece, for a precise writer like Brel it is intentional. It is a reference and a possible double entendre.

ouf ! merci ! vous avez exprimé pile ce que je pensais mais que je suis loin de pouvoir écrire en anglais 😁👍

@@warrenpeece9624 Maybe the connection is precisely too obvious. And above all superficial. Julien Sorel is a proud and ambitious young man, manipulative and hypocritical when needed. His overweening pride leads him to death and he faces it with dignity. Exactly the opposite of the man in Brel's song.
@MedusaLegend3 жыл бұрын
Yeah! Yeah! He started Jacques Brel!!! I so love this guy. He is not just singing. He is living his songs, he tells stories, and with such poetry. Next, you must listen to "Quand on a que l'amour (here in Belgium, we hear it at quarter of our weddings), "la valse à mille temps" (the ultimate singing challenge, and it personnally makes me travel back in time), "Au suivant" (the funniest), "Dans le port d'Amtserdam" (the song that summerize his whole style), and "Le plat Pays" (his description of Belgium).

So many of Brel's songs became huge classics, most of those songs are like little stories that he was telling, so beautifully written... His stage performances were famous, he was giving everything on stage, try have a look at the song "Amsterdam" (he never registered it on an album, there's only the live version) it is a very powerful performance, so impressive. So many artists covered his songs, many of them in English too like David Bowie or Nina Simone (who even sang "ne me quitte pas" in French), Celine Dion, Shirley Bassey, Ray Charles, Joan Baez, Marlene Dietrich, Marianne Faithfull, Tom Jones, Cyndi Lauper, Nirvana, Frank Sinatra, Sting, Barbra Steisand... They all sang Brel's songs ! He's like a national monument for many people in Belgium.

Great video, thanks! An important thing about traditional French "Chanson" is that they're not so much songs, as poems set to music (Brel's words always came first, then he would write the accompanying music), which sounds like mere semantics, but it's key to Brel's delivery, where it's close to a spoken word performance... A really interesting "double-bill" for you would be Brel's "Le Moribund", compared to Terry Jacks' 1974 worldwide smash cover version "Seasons In The Sun" (which he originally produced for The Beach Boys, but they rejected it, so he released it himself.) Jacks' own lyrics are a million miles away from Brel's, and his follow-up single was a version of "If You Go Away"... For me, the best current interpreter of Brel's work is Marc Almond (formerly of Soft Cell) - he did a whole album of new translations of Brel's songs (called "Jacques") which were approved by Brel's widow, but his biggest Brel hit was "Jacky" (AKA La chanson de Jacky) which you might enjoy...

Probably the best known version of this song (in the US and UK) is the barely recognisable "If You Go Away" by Terry Jacks, singing Rod McKuen's English translation, but in a more up beat pop single way. (McKuen translated a lot of Brel's songs and Jacks had another bigger hit with 'Seasons in the Sun', which was McKuen's translation of Brel's 'Le Moribund').

The sound in the intro is made by an "Ondes Martenot", a synth ancestor that was conceived in 1928. Here it was used with its ring ribbon and its expression controller that allows glissandi, somewhat like a theremin but with more precision.
